Hey guys,

The planned $1000 contest (http://forums.ichigos.com/showthread.php?t=14032&page=20) will still be opened, but when I have more time to invest in this forum. So, until then, let's open a smaller composition contest with a smaller prize pool.

(Is this forum still active...?)

I will start this competition as long as one or two trustworthy souls of Ichigos will agree to help me run it, due to my lack of time right now. I will leave this thread open for a week or two, maybe three, for you guys to discuss ideas and themes as well as rules for this competition: Then, when we've discussed it I will create an official thread for the contest.

So far I will write down my ideas for this one, but it's nothing set in stone... as I said, only my own ideas so please give me your input on whether to use it, some of it or ditch it all:

1. This contest will end before Christmas this year.
2. The prize money will be $20 for the winner. (Funded by me, I suppose :()
3. We should get Al to participate in this contest.
4. The contest should have no restrictions on instrument use, lenght and other technical aspects.

Oh and as a bonus to the winner, I will try to discuss with Gand the possibility of having the winning entry posted on the main site (www.Ichigos.com) although the rest of my staff colleagues here never listen to me anyway, so we'll see how that one goes.

I can help too! And more likely than in the past, I may have an entry. :shifty:

I would say that I would love to help, but it appears two other trustworthy fellows have already volunteered.

I may enter. (Gee, wonder how many times I've said that...)

Ok cool, now that I know I don't have to manage this contest myself, let's discuss the themes, rules and things like this.

How about composing to a picture of the composer's choice? :D

Milchh
October 14th, 2010, 03:28 pm
It's a nice idea, but considering that one of the more recently successful competitions was a similar idea, I would enjoy it if it was a poem/story/novel/etc. of the composer's choice. And no, I don't mean make a soundtrack for a book, per se, but an impression.

^That. Musical interpretation of a visual. Composer's choice or you find the images yourself Noir7, like you did years ago in a contest here.

Or just an interpretation of any other medium.

Rules? One track per member. If it is a coherent multi-movement music, stick them in a single audio format. ;p

Now, don't let this drag on.

Milchh
October 14th, 2010, 04:15 pm
I'll agree with not letting this drag on...but just give the idea I suggested another thought, rather than quickly choosing to recycling something that we've already done before.

Perhaps I can participate by chipping in $20 myself. We'll see.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, and for Mazeppa for putting this in your siggy ;]

Al, let's do it. Let's put in $40 for the winner. I know you want to ;)

Noir7
October 15th, 2010, 02:21 pm
No wait -

Al you are from this moment on *not* permitted to contribute any money to this competition.

I figured out that if you were to contribute to the winning pot, you are subtlety saying that you are not participating yourself which I cannot allow. It's been too long since you were actively participating in our contests and you know it!

I will personally fund $40 to the winner of this competition, as well as a 10% paycheck (from the total pot) to the one who helps me run this contest.

Milchh
October 15th, 2010, 04:11 pm
I wouldn't mind contributing a bit to the pot...I don't compose much anymore, but I'd like to at least encourage it.

No you're going to participate in this one.

Well, I'd still like to donate to it, though.

I don't feel as if I'm up to par for winning, however I'll humor you and crank out a composition for the first time in 15 months or so. ;)

As to the publication on the Ichigos website, the request must flow directly to the user Gand, as he is the only administrator capable of editing the master site. I don't see why he wouldn't do so, as we've had a system like that before. The main situation is getting it to his attention quick enough. I know there's been a few times where we've had to wait for several weeks before some requests made it to him.

And, sorry, but I have to put in the disclaimer, seeing how money has become involved again. And -- before someone tries to clip me on this -- I'm not doing this out of malice; I'm doing this to clarify Ichigo's position in regards to monetary rewards.

To Users That are Contributing Money to the Competition

Note that the prize money and donations are independent actions on the behalf of Noir7 and is not approved by the authorities of the Ichigos. The funding for this activity is outside of the budgeting of Ichigos Forums' Comptroller and affiliates. Thus, in no way shall Ichigos be held liable for lost, stolen, and/or received funding from this project.

I have a lot of my own stuff to be getting on with; composing a concerto and a couple of ensemble pieces worth half of my degree (Y) However, when the theme and rules etc have been established if anything I'm working on fits I will enter it.

Ander

i think i'll compose regardless of whether there's a winning prize. as long as we make good music. (am i being too kid about it? :heh:) well, with that said... i want to know... how does one come up with a theme that we can all agree on? i think that question might be a good place to start for the theme suggestion, no?

As far as I know, it won't be something that 100% of the people shall agree on, however, the majority. And if it's not that, then it shall be decided by the few people running the competition "officially" (of which we know only Noir7 is the only one).

I officially now have a little elf helping me around with this one, so let's not discuss monetary matters and let's decide the theme and the general rules.

Any suggestions so far?

An interpretation of any Visual or written medium. I am with mazeppa's post. The composer choice the piece of art that he want to interpret musically. This can me paints, drawings, photos, sculptures, panties, illustrations, poems, novels, short stories, (movies, TV series???), etc.

Or you select many different kind of arts and the composers picks the ones they like and use it for make their own musical interpretation.

October 17th, 2010, 10:21 pm
Something that comes to my mind is composing off of a poem, e.g. Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, or Ravel's Scheherazade (if you haven't heard this yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hF2wjf3ZrY ).

Other ideas:

1) Incidental music off of mythology;
2) Harmonization/development of a single, given melody (+ orchestration, if desired);
3) Composition of an "unusual" ensemble (let's say... perhaps 2 woodwinds, 2 brass instruments, two strings).
4) Composition of an atonal piece (though, the word "atonal" means different things to people...).
5) Composition of twelve-tone music.
6) Portrayal of a singular word/phrase/sentence.
7) Composition of a polytonal piece.
8) Composition of a piece in [______]'s style.

And I do like Mazeppa's suggestion.

Milchh

I'm glad at least somebody is agreeing with something, even if it is my lowly suggestion.

I do like the poem/story/myth aspect. It inspires a lot of musicians to write (hell, look at movies for example...or the Mephisto Valse/s for another example [Liszt]).

Who knows? Maybe we can pick stories that have a relation to Winter, just because...well I'm sure you all understand what I mean by such.

But seriously.

Picture/poem etc idea is wonderful.

Alfonso de Sabio
October 18th, 2010, 07:40 pm
Yeah, I really like that idea. Let's have it be something super classical—like, everybody pick a Bernini (http://www.google.com/images?q=bernini&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&biw=1238&bih=684&tbs=isch:1&source=lnt&sa=X&ei=iqK8TL6POpPAsAPDh8TwDg&ved=0CAYQpwU) sculpture and go for it.

Al
October 19th, 2010, 12:20 am
Oh, I see the Medusa. In keeping with 'super classical', how about Greek mythology, or fables and legends?

PorscheGTIII
October 19th, 2010, 01:41 am
Big man on tottempole says that we'll go with this poem idea. I think he wants us to settle on one poem for everyone, so what do you guys want to compose to?

May I suggest:Rainer Maria Rilke's Duino Elegies - The First Elegy (http://germanhistorydocs.ghi-dc.org/pdf/eng/313_Rainer%20Maria%20Rilke_Elegien%20(Eng)_62.pdf)
Which starts out: "WHO, if I cried out, might hear me – among the ranked Angels? Even if One suddenly clasped me to his heart I would die of the force of his being. For Beauty is only the infant of scarcely endurable Terror, and we are amazed when it casually spares us."

Milchh
October 19th, 2010, 03:03 am
Hm. I personally think something like that should be decided by you guys. That's my choice. I just think it'd be redundant then picking the poem if that is what it's going to be. When things get specific, then things get complicated.

Once again, that's just my $.02.

Alfonso de Sabio
October 19th, 2010, 04:44 am
Okay, for a long poem, I recommend "Goblin Market (http://theotherpages.org/poems/roset01.html)," by Christina Rosetti.

For a short one...

"The Second Coming (http://www.online-literature.com/yeats/780/)" by Yeats.

Noir7
October 19th, 2010, 05:11 pm
I suggest a really short one which is seemingly simplistic but can be interpreted in many ways. I'll leave it up to PorscheGTIII ;)

Milchh
October 19th, 2010, 06:11 pm
If you're going with short and simplistic, go with ee cummings. :)

PorscheGTIII
October 19th, 2010, 11:27 pm
Would you guys mind if I chose one so that no one knows what it will be until the official start date? That way no one has an advantage of being able to think up ideas for that poem before the start date.

Just know that if you do this, you will have copyright issues, if you ever want to go everywhere with her. Eric Whitacre made this poem, but was never allowed to perform / publish / take it with these words, for who is responsible for copyright in the poem would not allow it. He ended up having a new poet writing a new poem for his music.
Already said that. XD
