Hi all, was wondering if I could get some opinions on how best to play the right hand of a part of this Touhou medley.

Whole score (40+ pages?): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7PPNFW10
Youtube ~2:30 in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrY7riRvGuc&t=2m30s

Section F, pp8-9

Every time I run through it I end up using different fingering heh. Which means my playing speed suddenly takes a nose dive when I hit this section.

Thanks for any and all help.

It would be useless for anyone here to come up with a list of fingerings for you.

Two pieces of advice for you though. A good fingering is one which involves as little hand movement as possible. For example, in the first bar I would probably go: 5-4-3-4-2-3-1/3-4-2-3-1/3-2-1. With this you only need to change hand position three times. This is just an example off the top of my head, but however you vary that, I don't think it's possible to do it in less than 3 movements.

Second, play it slowly and write the fingering on that you are using so you know what you are doing. Then if anything feels awkward you can look at what fingers you are using and alter them into a more practical combination.

Hope this helps!

Hmm yeah I started writing them in before, but nothing quite felt intuitive. If the song wasn't meant to be played so quickly it wouldn't be such a problem hahah - will need to properly practice this part. (Confound it! Practice, ugh!)

I've heard there's a "right" way to approach fingering, but I stopped with lessons years ago so my technique/theory isn't so hot. I fully agree it comes down to individual preference, but getting an idea of how one would play it really helps with gaining a sense of balance between keeping hand position yet with awkward fingering vs. jumping but playing it more comfortably after. That's what I'm going for here. So yes, indeed a very quick and helpful reply, thanks a bunch Thorn. Much appreciated.

Yes. That's right. And you would still help... right? Am I right?
C'mon, this is tame stuff already with blatant context in a music forums hahah.

Great true moment? A friend playing his guitar "broke his certain string fingering a certain scale".
With that mindset, this should be swiftly deciphered.

Nothing so technical. We were crude high schoolers at the time.

Perhaps "chord" might be more appropriate for guitarists (though more accurately I think he was just playing arpeggios/the actual scale at the time). I'm an all-theory-forgotten piano player so I just mean the <letter><major/minor> scale. Then say it with the rest of the sentence...

Off-topic huh. But at least we're breathing life into this board. To be on it more, we've also learned à la Thorn Method that the best approach is to start slow and practice all sorts of fingering. Don't focus on the hand, but engage all digits. It's normal to feel awkward; if you want it to feel better, watch your fingers when you do it. It'll be different with everyone, so perhaps start with yourself to establish your technique. Then work up to combinations and other practical movements. I think technique is best brushed up with multiple methods and opinions to suit the situation. So if anyone else wants in on this with more help, I'd like that too. Thanks all.

I've heard there's a "right" way to approach fingering

There's a standard way to finger, but it isn't always the best.

Can't add much more to what's already been said. If the song's supposed to be played fast, then take that into account. You'll have to go through it slowly and work out a fingering that works for you. And it'll be awkward at first - there's no quick way to get that passage down.

Is it too late for me to join in on some fingering techniques?

By all means, do. Especially if you've already worked out some unique combinations.

@Zero: Thanks. I was looking for how others might play it and expecting to be adapting it anyway. But if, for example, I didn't see anyone using a crossover at a certain point, I was hoping to be able to pick out suspect crosses of my own and reconsider other approaches.

Although I wrote some numbers down before, I've actually found it easier to try to run through it at a semi-decent pace and see where my positioning instinctively ends up - then adjust for some weirder bits that take a bit more stretching/crossing over. Even though I tried to "plan" it out for the least number of repositioning before, it wasn't very natural. Might hit a lower limit with this speed-wise, but it's only for my own entertainment so that's alright for now. I'm sure memorizing the passage would help a whole lot, but hell if I could muster the dedication for that hahah. It'd be forgotten all too soon anyhow. Well I certainly hope the advice and things on this thread help other people who've wondered about particular fingernig as well.
