Hey, everyone!

I just got my first semester done of a University Class Piano course. I've played the following repertoire in the short four months that I've played piano:

1) Ravel - Prelude
2) Elgar - "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations.

I have all of my major scales down (learning minor scales soon), all arpeggios down, and am just trying to find ways to develop my technique. I still struggle a bit with trying to play four-part chorales at a decent tempo (I have to play these slowly unless there are a few common tones here and there which make them easier to play).

So I'm looking into the Hanon studies. Any suggestions? I start University Piano Lessons in a month.

There are also the Czerny studies. It change a bit of Hanon and it help too to develop the technique, but maybe mainly the velocity.

I recommend Czerny's "The School of Velocity." No matter what stage you're at, it's a great book.

I've always had quarrels with Hannon from personal experience, however, go for it. It never hurts to do the exercises-- just keep in mind to stay relaxed (arm weight...relaxed shoulders...loose wrists...etc you know the drill).

Thanks to both of you! I just contacted my professor today - it seems like he's for Czerny. I'm going to start doing piano lessons in... 11 days - excited. :)

I use both Hanon and Czerny - they provide a good bit of variety. Don't overdo it though - I practiced like crazy a few months ago and had serious pains in the elbow - been concentrating on writing a how to read sheet music (http://www.learnhowtoreadsheetmusic.com) course since then whilst pain subsides. A little and often is the key.
Good luck with the lessons.
