Hey all,

I've been remastering video game music for a while now and I think it's quite enjoyable! Though, I don't know many people that have a mixing background to help me with the specifics. I'd like to know what things I could be doing to make these mixes even better, so I'll upload different songs periodically.

So here's my way of going about things:

- I open any video game MIDI into Finale 2011 to edit the sheet music.
- The separate channels are assigned to instruments using my East West VST plug-ins (where some tweaking takes place, pan/reverb/etc)
- WAVs are exported into Reaper, where I do most of the mixing

Here's an example of the end result (original, then remastered):

Let me know what you think! :)

I don't know... you're mixing skill is good, but I just didn't like the song. hahaha. So, I guess it's safe to say that I don't think you did anything wrong, other than picking a song that I don't really care for. Looking forward to your next one though.

I can dig that... hahaha. It would have been better if I played number 4. I think it's a little too high pitched. Maybe lowering the tone might sound better, but I can't tell you for sure. I tell you what though... it makes me want to play those old video games again. hehe

haha, exactly. after doing a lot of these remasters, i've been playing the games as well :P

You can also go to my YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/sschafi1) to listen to a lot more of these. But since YouTube compresses audio, it might not sound as good as the source file.

I think the trumpet here need to be more on the front and a bit brighter. Maybe you can lower a bit the strings volume level when the trumpet is playing, and EQ the trumpet to find a spot that can make it a bit brighter?

Thanks for the tips, Nyu :)

Shinra's Theme : When I saw the title I was so excited. And then the entrance to your mix was just uber....! However, when the instruments kicked in.. it was too loud. I was expecting a little more damping. But other than being too loud compare to the intro... it's fine. Oh... there's something going on 2:09. I want to be in the choir to sing these parts... haha. a big dreamer I am, perhaps.

it may be the speakers or headphones you're using. I'm using some studio headphones and it doesn't sound too loud to me. Maybe I'm just going deaf, lol :heh:

and about the spot at 2:09...I have no idea what that is, lol.

Definitely my kind of song... it was very nice... especially the brass and the string..... which seem like the main things in the piece, so I guess it's a good think those two are especially nice. I like the song and I like the arrangement. Couldn't really think of any bad to say about it, but if I had to force myself to find one... I'd say the fadeaway ending wasn't what I wanted to hear. Maybe a big finale of BAH BAH BAH BOOM!!! I don't know... lol

For Jenova... what brass instruments did you use... and how many did you use them?

Giles

I used french horns for the melody, and trombones with a hard attack for the ostinato. I think there were two horn parts and two trombone parts.

Cool~ Thanks for the answer. I wanted to see how you made such a cool brass section. turns out its so much simpler than I thought. just two each... hehe.

haha, yeah. it helps when the sounds you're using are great to begin with. There are so many choices for brass instruments. If you're able to get any of the East West Symphonic libraries, do so. They're great :)

Here's another remaster!

This one's from RPG Maker for the Playstation. To tell the truth, I can't find the original track anywhere. A midi was sent to me from someone requesting this track to be remastered but didn't tel me which one it was from lol. So here's the remastered track anyway :P Watch in HD for better audio quality.

It's not from RPG Maker XP, that's just the best pic I could find :)

BUMP!

Here's a remastered version of Dimension Breach from Chrono Cross. This OST has a lot of great acoustic guitar work on it, so I thought I'd showcase my guitar samples. :P

Hey guys,

I put this remaster up quite a while ago on YouTube, but I thought it would go nicely in this thread. It's the "Doom Castle" theme from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest!

Nice! Quite busy track, lol.

Indeed, haha. It's really tough to try and find balance with all the instruments playing at the same time. At some points I just gave up; it was proving to be more work that what it was worth, lol. :P
