Hello forum, I am not sure if this goes against the rules or not, I didn't read anything that forbids a thread like this, but anyways, I am looking for someone to compose a theme for me!

I am trying to learn how to compose, but I have little to no experience doing so, and I am currently having a case of "composers block". I am in need of a theme for my story that I am working on , A Perfect World, but under the conditions I am in I cannot compose a theme myself  .

Anyways, to whoever decides to help me with this (your help will be greatly appreciated ^_^ ), the theme is a dark theme, so it should be sort of slow paced and melancholy, almost menacing. Thank you in advance!

Just to know, how long must last the theme? Is there an instrument you prefer? It can help someone help you^^

Well the theme can be however long the composer chooses it to be, I'm putting no restrictions on that.
I would prefer the theme to be in an orchestral style, meaning the use of strings, but whoever composes the song can add any instrument they want, even though I would like piano to be incorporated as well.

Thanks again.

I think this is a great idea actually. I'd love to come up with something for you, too. Do you have any other guidelines you'd like for anyone to follow should they choose to attempt this?

Thank you! No, I have no other guidelines besides the ones I posted!

If you can, maybe you should offer bits of the story, so others can get ideas easier.

Good idea.

The story is about a boy who doesn't have a sense of reality. He suffers from a disease in which he can become "trapped in his own mind", in a sense. He considers his mind his own world, but he does not have control over what happens. All of the negative things that would normally be in the back of someones mind is in the front of his, and he actually sees and feels those negative things.
His deepest fears, the things he hates, all of these things come alive to him.

Here's what I came up with yesterday. It's only about a minute long, but it's fits your requirements, as far as I can tell.

I'll get a better bass sample next time, or I'll maybe just play the part on my new 5-string, later in the week)

SoraKing, if you decide you like this tune and want to use it, then I'm granting you a limited license to use this tune for non-profit only for A Perfect World. For any other usage, contact me first. =)

Btw, what is A Perfect World? You said it's a story, but a story in what format? Digital? Paper and Ink? And why does it need a theme song? Just curious.

Thanks Solaphar! This is exactly the kind I was looking for! And thank you for your time helping me, I appreciate it. And no, this in no way is going to be used for profit. I only plan on possibly uploading it to Youtube, giving you full credit of course :)

And A Perfect World is a story being written in digital format. I decided it needed a theme because I am deciding if I should make kind of a webcomic out of it (a non-profit one, of course). If this whole plan gets put into motion, I will be uploading videos onto Youtube in which this theme will be played. Again I thank you for this, and sure you can PM me the MIDI file, I might decide to make sort of a remix of it.

Interesting interpretation. I perceive it more like a romantic theme, I see a sad couple in my imagination, lol.

SoraKing, in the end I dislike the melody of my latest version (the one I had in my previous post). I had an earlier one where the melody moved around a lot less, and in retrospect it sounded better (less activity in the melody made it more ponderous). I'll attach the earlier mp3, so you can grab it and compare.

Yeah, I can see that perspective. I wrote it picturing some guy trapped in a dreamscape. It's supposed to be sort of lonely and melancholic, with just a hint of dread (my overly cheery flute line screwed-up the dread part though. =/)

I almost never compose, so I'm not all that experienced at composing. This is my first "complete" tune in over a year, I have infinitely more tunes I never finish. They're more like ideas I guess. Lots of composers probably have many unfinished tunes, I imagine.

Well I decided to play around with the first MIDI you posted, and here is what I came up with. I changed the flute and the bass, and used different strings, but I didn't change any notes yet.

By the way, anybody else who finds this request interesting can post something else too, I want to hear other peoples interpretations!

This is my extremely rough and way-too-simple-and-predictable version. I also think I subconsciously stole some chords from a choir piece I've been listening to...blargh. I hope you get some ideas from it, though.

That is nice! I like the start. You got a melancholy with the piano. :D (sorry by posting these comments in your thread SoraKing, lol).

I think I still like my earlier flute melody more though, since I feel it lends a slower pace to the overall feel. So I kind of regret posting the later mp3 with the more active flute.

Your mix is a bit reverb-heavy, and you've kind of imbalanced the instrument volume (the strings are a little over-powering and I can hardly even hear the bass now). And I'm not sure I like how you panned the bell and piano so close to the center, rather than left & right, respectively, like I had it before. Just some minor gripes I guess.

I'm still planning to record the bass myself when I get a chance, then it won't have that sucky midi timbre anymore.

It'd be cool if I could get a real pianist and flautist to play those parts. Don't know anyone with tubular bells so that and the slow strings are probably bet left to the computer.

It sounds much better with a real piano. The pedaling creates some really dramatic dissonance.
