View Full Version : Ichigos End of Summer Transcribing Contest (Begins!)

I have selected 3 pieces for the purposes of this competition. Contestant should pick ONE of the three pieces provided and arrange it for the piano. The only audio provided to the contestants are the youtube links. Should contestants decide to look for a midi or mp3 on their own for better quality that is up to them. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE!!

Rules:
1. The arrangement must be for 1 piano player.
2. Standard orchestral notation must be used.
3. All submissions must be posted on this thread before Friday, August 19, 11:59pm Mountain Time.

Tips:
- Creativity will be a larger deciding factor than accuracy.
- Playability and notation will also be a large factor in scoring.
- You don't have to transcribe the entire piece to win so long as what you did has all the important parts. This means if you feel having the piano play the same thing 10times over just because the original music does it with a bunch of different instrumentation changes, you don't have to!

The songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRO_5HR5ats
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy9FlB0MODA&feature=related

The three judges will be Myself, Brncao, and Porche. I hope you guys dun mind me picking the songs:P Personally, I am looking forward to hearing what sort of things people can come up with. 3 very different pieces, pick the one you like and let your imagination loose, but most importantly...HAVE FUN!!

Edit: Sorry the 2nd judge is brncao. I don't know why I put Nyu there cause I didn't even ask him if he wanted to or not.

I was just wondering how many people are thinking about participating in this competition since no one has written anything under this thread.

I've never done this transcription thing, but this sounds interesting. The next two days are going to be crazy busy for me, but I'll try my best to get an entry in!

Exciting stuff.

Very busy with my research and report writing this month. I will try to squeeze 2 or 3 hours out of this weekend and arrange something - probably the one by Sahashi Toshihiko. (I feel that I ought to do something, seeing that there is a fair amount of effort by the organisers and other participants! ^_^ )

Edit: hmmmmm... out of the vast amount of music composed by Sahashi, why that one...? (Sorry, just my own thought - feel free to ignore.) Anyway, probably going to take a break with work and make a start on this.

Edit2: hmmmmmmmmm... [Preview link removed.] Some inspiration for this arrangement taken from various music I like, especially the Guin piano nocturne from Guin Saga. Anyway, what if I repeat the melody 10 times while the original doesn't? :P

I hope DunNotCome's interesting arrangement didn't scare off potential participants. XD I am probably much less formally musically educated than most transcribers/arrangers here, so I hope more people will be encouraged to try something for fun!

Don't be afraid! Remember, the key of this competition is creativity! Accuracy to the original sound track won't be as important so long as it sounds good.

To answer your question regarding the choices I made for the music: They were three very contrasting pieces. The gundam theme have ALOT of ways that people could arrange it. Whether they want to keep the fast paced battle theme or make it a tranquil hymn I can see this piece working in all sorts of ways. Similarly, night at the museum opens its door to many ways as well. the K-on theme is a fun piece to do as it can be altered into many genres such as jazz pop or even blues. The chord progression can be both simplified or made more complex.

I won't comment on Dunnotcome's transcription in particular until the end of this competition to avoid unfair advantage to others but I will say this. If I hear someone arrange night of the museum theme into a blues or something, I may be very impressed ;).

For me it is much easier to do an accurate transcription than a good arrangement, since I lack the proper musical training. :P

Indeed I was thinking there are a few rather different ways of arranging the gundam bgm. My indecisiveness made me add repeats with variation rather than omitting them. XD

Posting a preview of mine if anyone is interested: [Preview link removed] (This is what came out by taking a few hours off work. I hope I am right in saying none of my colleagues read this forum. -_-; )
Still have a few days to improve it. ^_^ or maybe I will make a completely different one if time...

I would love give this an attempt, but who knows... Considering my last place finish in the previous competition, this one can only be better! :D

Edit: Actually, didn't see the deadline. This will be tough to finish.

Hey can you perhaps move the deadline? i think im going to try this... Thanks a bunch :)

It seems like a few people have said that the deadline is a bit too early for them. As such, I have decided to move the deadline to Aug 19. I hope this is enough time for people to finish their entries but due to personal circumstances this is the latest I can push it :(. Good luck all!!

This post is for my submission:

The main arrangement (that I posted earlier):
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo.pdf - the score.
http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~pcfc2/tachiagareikariyo.mp3 - mp3 output from the score - sorry, don' t have recording equipments :P.
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo.mid - midi output from the score.

A Variation: (slower)
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var.pdf
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var.mid

Variation II: (simpler, happier)
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var2.pdf
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var2.mid

Variation III: XD
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var3.pdf
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var3.mid

Variation IV: (very slow)
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var4.pdf
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var4.mid

Variation V: (lively)
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var5.pdf
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var5.mid

Variation VI: :P
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var6.pdf
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var6.mid

Variation VII (Finale, I think): (fast)
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var7.pdf
http://sperion.web.fc2.com/score/tachiagareikariyo_var7.mid

All the above are subject to modifications until the deadline.

Decided to make a slower variation today when I was not in the mood to play the previous one. XD The first one tries to give the same impression as the original. Variation I is more like what I usually play. Variation II is experimental, don't take it seriously :P.
I will edit this post for updates (if any).

5 days to go! Good luck everyone! 頑張れ~

Edit: For the judges, please look at the first arrangement (without _var in the filename, 5 pages, with an mp3 output from the score). It is supposed to imitate the original mood, and that is what I think strongly about transcribing. The variations are just for fun and experimenting, so please do not feel you have to look at them. I don't want to burden the judges with extra work!

By the way, I probably like Var. I the best individually, but I don't like to see it as a transcription as a lot of the chords are different from the original.

Note that the set of 8 arrangements are not really in the thema-variation format - each variation may be better played individually (although shorter), or perhaps...

Bonus track, thanks to alpiso for the inspiration:

Sperion, would it be ok if you pick out which one you think is the best and we will base a majority of your score on that one arrangement? if everyone submitted 5 entries I don't think we will have time to give a detailed analysis on all of them. We do appreciate your enthusiathm and the 5 variation will definately be taken into consideration when scoring but giving an analysis on all 5 variations is not very practical.:heh:

Thanks,
kk

Great, the deadline is putted a little away, I think I'll be able to post my "small" participation, regarding the huge work done by sperion (all my congratulations!) :heh:

I wish to have a precision about the "submission format". If I well understood, The submission must be a youtube video, right ? What about the video part ? A black screen with the title, the score synchronized with the audio, or myself playing my score

Thanks again ^_^

KaitouKudou
August 16th, 2011, 08:40 pm
oh dear, a youtube vid is definately not a good way to submit. Please submit a pdf of your score and a midi or mp3 of the score. That should be all we need. The youtube vids I posted are the three songs people has to pick from but definately not meant to reflect the submission format.

Not exactly. The audio files provided for transcription and arranging were YouTube links. The only true requirement is a formatted score posted in this thread. Any other provided audio file is optional wether it be MIDI, MP3 or a YouTube link.

Here is my contribution, thanks to the postponement of the date (thanks to KaitouKudou :thumb: ) !

It's very simple, really much simpler than those done by Sperion and DunNotCom.
Perhaps, as I don't have a high skill on piano (I lost a lot since I stopped practising ) I do the basics :P.
I was inspired by a latin style for the beginning, then I went to a rhythm with triplets. You will see and hear :

MP3 : http://www.box.net/shared/xhydxev0cvkbf1g7ngsn (http://www.box.net/shared/xhydxev0cvkbf1g7ngsn)
PDF :http://www.box.net/shared/1nt0qtxqnpsro87q7d79 (http://www.box.net/shared/1nt0qtxqnpsro87q7d79)
LY : http://www.box.net/shared/6zaoojy0dmzhhkh83gx2 (http://www.box.net/shared/6zaoojy0dmzhhkh83gx2) (Lilypond source file)

About the audio, as the score is simple I rather played it myself instead by the sequencer (too mechanical and because lilypond doesn't yet do all dynamics and ornaments :heh: )

The work done by Sperion is very impressive. In a whole way, I really like the chords progression !
DunNotCom did something very technical and hinamuffin's version is "soft", I appreciate ^_^

A very nice arrangement! I don't think it is much simpler (or rather I don't think the others are complicated technically), but definitely more accessible! ^_^ Well done.
The score is nicely notated as well. I usually leave out dynamics, pedal, phrasing, etc for the performer's interpretation :P , but when they are written it definitely saves the performer some effort.

Well, I was wondering about the tonality of the second part of my arrangement, and as the night is the mother of counsel, I did the correction. I updated my post above. In fact, I change from a Bb major tonality to a F major ! The third part, stays on a D minor.

@Sperion: Big Thanks ^_^ !
Usually I forget dynamics, pedal, and others too ....
I don't think to write them. But for sure, it give a "nice score". And as it's a part of the scoring, I took care about it a little bit :P.

Edit:
Just for your info, some of the devices which i used for the transcription are used in very difficult pieces, like the broken chord ending is actually Beethoven's moonlight sonata ending. I figured it would make it sound grander so i put it in. There is a long chordal leap on the left hand which is actually from Chopin's Revolutionary etude, which makes it sound very oceanic, and the arpegio accompaniment are actually simple devices which i found useful from Beethoven's Appassionata 3rd movement. Since the competion is about creativity and stylistic with playability, i figured i would just use them to make my transcription sound better.
Hope this helps the judges.
