The meaning of the words epic and ballad refer to different things depending on usage.

The word "Epic" in literature (as far as I know) and everyday language refers to amazing, incredible, magnificent but has a slightly different meaning in movies and music. In movies or shows, the word epic usually or often refers to great ordeals and events taking place within
the plot, the danger is extreme and there is a overall darker feeling.

However, in music, Epic commonly refers to a feel of a song. Usually in cooperating heavy use of an orchestra and/or strings with a great dark feel but sometimes,

Here's an example of what could be classified as an epic feel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nklvuocGCAQ
This is a piano cover that could be classified as epic based on a heavy left and heavy wash of sound.

This is a piano cover that sounds good but isn't what I would classify as epic

Also Ballad refers to a poem meant to be sung or sometimes not but in music is a flowing soft feel.

Any thoughts?

'Epic' has been overused to death, and it really doesn't mean much more than "awesome" any more (IMHO), but originally it referred to stories of large scale: in textual length, in scale of events, and in the richness of the world. Tolkien's Silmarillion encompasses the rise and fall of an entire world, with a history as rich and as detailed as any I know of in all of literature. In the Odyssey, the hero communes with gods.

but in music is a flowing soft feel.

You *might* want to check your facts on that one, as well as the background of what a "ballad" actually is in literature and poetry.

I just heard the definition of Ballad in school I don't know much about them but all I know is when people say piano ballad it's always flowing and very pleasent. I can't really describe it.
