well when i started piano, i have soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many problems and difficulties

one, i can't play fast, and even if i do i'll screw up in like couple bars :heh:
two, my hands looks so ugly when i play, i guess that's one of the reason why i can't play fast (BEFORE, not now  )
lastly i think is my pedaling, sometimes i just can never pedal correctly and these stuipd sound will ring at the wrong place making the piece sound super sticky and unclean.

I do.
At the beginning, I had a difficulty playing quickly, too. I also had a really big issue with intonation .
Now, all I need to work on is sight-reading.

I started recently, I have trouble following the peice, most of the time I branch off into a solo away from my band class. (my teacher gets really p.oed) Another thing is sharps and flats, Alot of the time I play flats as sharps and sharps as flats. I can play pretty fast, though if i continue for a few minutes, I mess up in everyone bar, missing almost every note. I can site read pretty well, at least if the piece is in the staff and not above or below it. (I suck at reading things outside the staff) though inside the staff I'm good!

I play the piano. I can easily play fast, but I can't seem to read the notes that well. So I usually try to figure it out by just listening to the music. I do that for so many video games' songs. And I can't really play with both hands with certain songs; I don't have that type of coordination, yet, although I can easily play most of my songs with both hands (except for the video games, no sheet music).

I don't play very well.. I often get bored when I play, so I don't spend loads of time trying to learn how to play.

Oops. :sweatdrop: I meant like getting the getting like the right amount of sound out, because sometimes, I played it so softly the sound barely came out. What do you call that?

I don't have any technical problems, just this one that is me. I always play everything too fast, and have a lot of trouble slowing down.

I've been playing for a while now. I have stupid techinque problems. That's what you get when you move around a lot. Different teachers, different techinques.

My problem? My right and left hand aren't equally developed.

My right can do pretty much anything, whereas my left can't even manage scales properly. X_X

In my friends opinions, I'm very good at the Piano.
I've been playing for eleven years. ^_^ My difficulties would be playing flats and sight reading with using the pedal.

umm my diffucultes are that I can't sing while playing working on that now =^ )

another is that I can't play really really fast songs I can play fur elise at a tempo of presto lol it was the 1st song i learned and it was by ear so I have been playing that song everytime i practice and I can play it normal not looking at the keys, and i look at the keys its like really fast, another difficulty i have is flipping pages when its like a song that is 6 pages and wont spread across my piano easily lol i think thats all

me playing piano and singing (http://us.f3.yahoofs.com/msgr/tomcunni1589/.tmp/Ev.wav?msIB9vBBNfCxqVdf)

hmm.. well if u find difficulty changin pages.. u should learn the main tune in either hand.. so that wen u need to switch pages.. one hand still plays and the other flipss...

or u can do wot i do.. jus remba the whole song.. it is possible.. jus takes time.. like a week or so...

I tend to rush too, especially when I have a solo since I feel bad for my violinist having to wait until I'm done, so she could come in. But my main problem is memorizing pieces. I just ..can't.. memorize no matter how many times I play it over and over. Luckily for me, after 10 years of playing the piano, I managed to make it through by just letting my fingers move by itself. As a result, I was never confident during concerts.

I play the piano and the 'chinese' piano. For the normal piano, I need to work on the consistent (whatever my teacher call it) also on my both hand together scales and dominant seventh (I hate that a lot) and for the Chinese Piano I had to be more emotional too, and I mean dramatic kind of emotion (yea, my teacher is quite picky about that).

I was really bad at keeping my fingernails cut for piano, subsequently I had to play flat-handed rather than curl-handed otherwise my fingers would slip off the keys. I was good at memorising pieces but my sight reading sucks - I always look down at the keys while I'm playing so often I get stuck half-way through a piece because I haven't looked up at the music. My sight reading is much better since I started playing the violin, but sightreading two hands together is very hard for me. I also tend to rush - I like playing fast pieces more than slow ones.

Ayashi_Boi
December 27th, 2004, 07:40 pm
lol, i play the piano.....

Wow the Chinese piano/plucking string thing is CRAZY!! i always wanted to learn how to play it...or try it..hmm ahahah!

I'm an Ok sight reader, i just sometimes hesitate and and get confused and ending up getting mad at the piece.
Memorizing i can do when the piece doesn't belong to me or at my house lol. i know that's weird...
Stretching is no problem, but if it's like C[mid], G[mid], C[high], G[high]. Then i have to trill it....
Oh and i have a problem using my ring finger...i always hated that finger that's why i always use my middle finger, even when doing those triads solid and broken.

Ok to sum it up, i just play the piano for fun and i dont take lessons no more, even though i only taken them for 3 years.
So far my fav songs are: 1000 no kotoba [For Kairi], The Christmas Song, Inochi no namae[from ichigos] and other songs i cant remember.

lol sorry for making this post kinda long and boring.......

1: i have difficulties at learning pieces which have alot of flats and sharp, ie. a C sharp major sonata, or a G sharp. its just so much to take into considering, so i take much longer time to learn such pieces than if they were in C major. Besides, why are they made in different keys? the only reason i can find is that they are easier to play, technically in one key than with another, ie. fur elise in A minor vs. fur elise in C sharp minor.

anyway, anyone have any good ways of learning how to read pieces in keys with alot of sharps and flats in them?

2: if a play fast songs, i get tired in my hands, but i guess the only cure for that is hard training.

other than that i havent got that many problems, its just that things take time and patience (hope i spelled this correct  )

Playing fast is easy to me. I can keep playing and playing until I get bored. I never get tired for some reason... I can play fast, but the accuracy with my fingers can get amazingly bad. So the best thing is to keep practicing the part, getting faster every time you repeat it. That's how I do it.

But in a song I am almost done learning, it has a C flat. Is there such a thing? Same with the B sharp. They're two white notes next to each other, no black notes in between.

The C flat (and E#, B# and Fb) are purely theoretical things. As you know, as you progress up the key signatures - F has 1 flat (Bb), Bb has 2 flats (Bb, Eb), you eventually reach the key of Gb major, which has (Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb). The note that is actually played on the piano would be the B, but the Cb is used firstly to keep the key signature order, and secondly because a "real" scale only has one of each letter in it (which is why we can't have a B then a Bb in your scale books). An example of one not "real" scale would be a diminished scale (just for your info). Same goes for the other weird accidentals. Hope this helps. :)

I play piano! I've played for about 8 years. Considering I'm only 13, I think that's not TOO shabby. I have tried playing a whole bunch :  of mozarts stuff and WOW!!! The only one ive been able to play was rondo alla turca (now for all you ppl who haven't been playing that long, that may seem nearly impossible). What's sad (and it REALLY  gets to me) is that that is one of his EASIEST PIECES... <sigh> Fast fingers don't even BEGin to cut it when you play his hard stuff... anyhow, take a look at langlang on 60 mins. Reaaaally fast fingers. (makes mozart look like childs-play?) Just visit the OMGOMGOMG forum :heh: .

Been playing piano for 10 years. Play classical music and accompaning my friends with cello, clarinet or other instruments. Just finish 3 concerts with a Junior Orchestre. We played the christmasstory The Snowman and we played The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky and The Swanlake.

I love to play Chopin and Beethoven. I followed a course where you have to perform once or twice in a month, I really love that, playing with my friends for a big audience and everywhere in the town. This will be my last year, maybe I will switch to guitare, maybe...

I've been playing for about eight years now, and I have two major problems.

1) TIMING! I hate math, so I can't stand counting out the piece, especially when its in a weird time signature like 9/12. My rhythmns therefore tend to be odd..

2)I don't like playing flats, for some reason. ...I had another huge problem but I forgot it. :heh:

Oh yeah! Every piano sounds and feels different, so sometimes I can't adjust to the different resistance of the keys.

uh-huh I have trouble sight reading too! I guess its just an evil curse going through half the pianists in the world. to me it's either guessing very quickly what the music actually says or reacting really quickly. Knowing how you're meant to sightread and actually doing it don't quite work with me! I'm not sure what all of you mean by fast though....

Been playing piano for.... 6 years I think
Problems I have:
1) Can't sit in front of a piano for more than 45 minutes
2) Using the mute pedal during the "pp" signs (my teacher makes me do that =.=)
3) Bobbing my body as if I'm "into" the music.... Only been able to do that with one song, and that's a Chopin Waltz..
4) Practicing songs for examinations (They're SOOOO boring)
5) My left hand sucks at arpegios

Pros:
1) Beat counting is a synch to me
2) That's all :P lol

an-kun

what the heck?

you shouldn't be using the pedals to make it softer during pp. Kick your piano teacher for me :P . i think the bobbling is just a by-product of trying to get the expression really good so don't worry. i guess you're one of those "keep on your feet" people then hellxtremedawg which explains points 1,3-5.

*kicks my piano teacher* XD feels so nice....
Yeah, I know bobbing is when one is really into the music, but I can play out the "expression" without bobbing my body... well, unless my hands have to move all over the keyboard... THEN my body bobs, but that's because I HAVE to bob to reach over lol

*remembers the anime "Piano"* <---- Full of unrealistic bobbing that doesn't even fit in with the beats lol

why you guys want piano teachers? its stupid, a waste of money. Teachers tell you what to do, and make it seem like its school which is bad already. I usually just teach my self, and hey I m doing fine. I been playing for like 4monthes. I know about 15 songs by heart and I can pretty much learn anything without problems. Like I m learning Chopin's Fantasie right now. Wow at first I thought it was VERYYYYY hard, but its just kinda hard for me now. I can almost play it at the right speed the first 1 page.

well, i play too...actually i play a lot of other instruments, since i'm in a school band n the personal instructor n conductor for my band mates...but i found that piano is the best!

i'm quite unique so 2 say :D coz i started out when i'm in high school (around 13)...u see, i dun really into music when i'm little though my late granpa(whos is a musician himself) taught me alittle...but i just don really pay that mush attention...and when i went to boarding school (the one i'm now), i noticed an old piano in the hall n saw one of my late seniors playing it...i got interested n kinda watched him play for awhile...n when alone, i tried pressing the keys(it's my first time really!) i kinda hooked to it n spent the day playing, trying to mimic my senior...n now i ended up being the only self-taught piano player in the school (an all-boys) n my friends used to called my 'maksim of the school'... :sweatdrop:

funny story heh?

Yeh, that etude (aka "The Ocean") is certainly the highlight of his Op. 25. As is the No. 12 ("Revolutionary") from his Op. 10 Etudes (http://sheetmusicarchive.net/dlpage_new.cfm?composition_id=588). I'm not a terribly huge fan of Chopin, but my favorites from him are definitely his piano etudes.... not that I can really play any of them .

I've used to play piano, but mostly cause I was forced to do it. I kinda regret slacking off on my lessons, because now that I've become genuinely interested in music, I find myself with so little time to dedicate to learn instruments. The little time I spend now playing the piano is mostly just improvising to get ideas for my compositions, or simply for fun.

I've been playing since last year...there's no teacher to push me forward so I pick my own times to practice. Eh, that's why I'm behind. Curse the bass clef. I can't read bass clef well at all. I have to write the name of the note by every one of them. That also means I suck at sight-reading! >_< You all have someone who's forcing you to do it. I got no one except myself forcing me to do it.

Oh oh I play. I love this instrument... I just don't like practicing a lot. I don't really like practicing a lot of my instruments... ha...ha... but it's still good. Freakishly some teachers think I practice for hours... haha, ten minute practicing is the way to go! ... but I digress...

My problems are:
-Sometimes I play too fast... T_T
-supposedly I don't lift the pedal enough times
-my left is sometimes louder than my right... when it shouldn't...
-I get nevous playing infront of lots of people

The best is playing blindfolded. Now THAT is fun.

The best is playing blindfolded. Now THAT is fun.
I agree! ^^ Also fun is blind-folded playing the piano + singing!

Edit: Also fun is crossing your hands to play (e.g. left hand plays right hand stuff, vice versa) . . I can sort of do that for the first part of Fur Elise. And also fun is playing upside-down!

well, i play too...actually i play a lot of other instruments, since i'm in a school band n the personal instructor n conductor for my band mates...but i found that piano is the best!

i'm quite unique so 2 say :D coz i started out when i'm in high school (around 13)...u see, i dun really into music when i'm little though my late granpa(whos is a musician himself) taught me alittle...but i just don really pay that mush attention...and when i went to boarding school (the one i'm now), i noticed an old piano in the hall n saw one of my late seniors playing it...i got interested n kinda watched him play for awhile...n when alone, i tried pressing the keys(it's my first time really!) i kinda hooked to it n spent the day playing, trying to mimic my senior...n now i ended up being the only self-taught piano player in the school (an all-boys) n my friends used to called my 'maksim of the school'... :sweatdrop:

funny story heh?
it's easy for you to quit~ I have my own privet Teacher and I can't decide to quit or not~~Why is it so hard??

why you guys want piano teachers? its stupid, a waste of money. Teachers tell you what to do, and make it seem like its school which is bad already.

I couldn't agree more. I hate my piano teacher- he never lets me play anything but Bach  i prefer modern music (1900+)

lol, I love my piano teacher. He'll go buy whatever pop/contempory I want. Piano is fairly easy unless I'm in a bad mood. I can never get the really high notes either. And I never can tell apart G and F for the bass celf. Well actually, I can sometimes, but those are my good days :heh:

I play the piano. I can easily play fast, but I can't seem to read the notes that well. So I usually try to figure it out by just listening to the music. I do that for so many video games' songs. And I can't really play with both hands with certain songs; I don't have that type of coordination, yet, although I can easily play most of my songs with both hands (except for the video games, no sheet music).
Not reading notes fast enough.. that was a prob i had before. BUt playing songs that you're not familiar with, and that you like will help LOTS! I almost got perfect on my sightreading for exam cux of that... tho my ear test is still horrible.

Anyway, my biggest prob.. I think its performing/ playin in exams. I get so nervous my mind goes blank. ANd prob another one is I need bigger hands =P

what i have trouble with is like octave stuff, because i have small hands and it's so hard because i tire out, so my teacher's making me play octave scales -_- and it hurts because of all the excercises..

Yay piano! I'm obsessed...They say "practice fifteen minutes every day." I say "Umm...okay then..." and don't practice for a week. Then one day I disappear into the basement (where we keep the piano) for an hour or two. :heh: Yeah, and most of the stuff I play when I do practice isn't even the music my teacher gives me. I keep printing stuff from the net. Or I play songs I taught myself. The latter are very simple. :heh:

I've been playing piano for several years now, but I still have problems. Quite a few, actually.

My sight reading isn't great; I always have to play andante (or even largo) whenever I sight read. But my teacher sometimes said it's better to play slow and accurately than to play quickly and make lots of mistakes...

I tend to get tense when I play too, so it's hard to play quickly. I think it's my wrists that get tense, which doesn't allow for greater movement...

I've always had trouble with rhythms too. (ie speeding up, slowing down, etc) I try to use the metronome, but I always end up turning it off.

Playing fast is also a problem for me. I tend to lose control of my fingers, so all the notes don't sound.

I get nervous too. I wish I could fix these problems...

Nervousness can only be fix if you practice playing infront of audiences oftenly. But even if you do that, sometimes you will still screw up a piece because of nervousness, it's only natural so don't worry about that, just take a deep breathe and think straight, it's all in your head.

Playing fast is also a problem for me. I tend to lose control of my fingers, so all the notes don't sound.

You need to establish a strong foundation before you can attempt a fast piece. What i mean by that is, you need to practice a lot of Hanon, Czerny and Mozart sonatas. They really help your fingers, so that each fingers can move individually, and not trigger any other fingers. Usually you lose control of your fingers is because your fingers still can't move individually. So my best recommendation is practice Hanon everyday for at least 15 minutes, VERY SLOW, lift every fingers up and strike the piano with power...CONTROLLED POWER of course.

i don't prefer using wrist while playing fast...if your wrist is moving UP and DOWN while playing a fast song then it's a VERY bad habit and it will prevent you from playing fast. Just remember, when playing fast songs, ONLY USE YOUR FINGERS! that's how you can make the piece clear and clean.

hope i helped

well the real reason you are nervous is that you're not concentrating on playing. If you just concentrated on that single task nervousness isn't an issue. Clear your head and stop worrying what people think about you. Just be relieved you're not being filmed for a dvd. -_-

Thanks for the tips Neerolyte and an-kun. I'll definitely try out what you said!

usually i get nervous when i have doubts about the pieces i am playing. If you are confident that you can play the piece perfectly well, then there's nothing to worry about so nervousness is not an issue ^_^
