I just read an article by Phillip Pullman about why The Chronicles of Narnia are fundementally evil. Well, he didn't say "evil" because he thinks he's above right and wrong. I just wanted to see what you all think.

Kinda hard to say. I first read the series after seeing this animated TV movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079474/). While I did like it, I was a bit turned off by the heaping helping of Christian Allegory (and the attendent, inevitable prejudices) that runs through it; and, like Mr. Pullman, I thought the ending was a bit of a cop-out. "Evil"? Hardly. But, thank Newbery, there *is* more to Childerens Lit than "Narnia"...

I read the books when I was young. They were okay, though hardly life-changing, even now with my newly acquired knowledge . . I see no reason to dig too deep into them, although the christian influence is a bit interesting to check up on . . .

Hmm, interesting article . . for him to think that Lewis' books are "evil" suggests to me that he's jealous of Lewis . . meh!

^ I tend to think it's jealousy. Since his books are "A Child's First Guide to Atheism," I don't see how he could possible criticise Lewis for his heavy Christian symbolism.

Also I think Tolkein turned "allegory" into a bad word for the same reason... jealousy. Lewis's books were and are more successful than his.

i liked the books when i read them, but evil... never! they were actually written very well, just the stuff for children ^_^

EDIT: i read the article - talk about being sore!!! i seriously doubt it that that was what C S Lewis meant while he was writting the Chronicles - i think he just wanted to write a good story

I read em like 2 years ago, I remember I loved them and finished all 7 in one week. (i guess 1 book a day?) though, Now I have read better kick ass books, like all of philip pullmans book. he"pwns" them. so does Lawrence watt-evan. But for 4th graders, I guess they are good. But for "advanced readers" they suck. Too me, I tried reading one of them. They are short and boring...

I found the series boring... considering I only read the first 2 books. >.>
And this dude needs to calm down. <.< He seems super jealous, which is sort of funny...

Personally, I enjoyed it. I love the creativity in it, though I never read the books. I just saw the animation thing. But that was really good. Its one of those Harry Potter or Lord of the Ring things to me, where there's just absolutely fascinating ideas.

I heard they're planning on making a movie for this, but I don't know how it'll work, like if they're doing it on every book or not . .

The series has yet to survive a decent adaptation

the guy who wrote this article is just jealous - that obvious...

and C.S. Lewis wrote a great fantasy series for children, humorous and exciting...

our allowance to critisize his work will be given when we write something as good as the Cronicles

I loved the Narnia books, and they were really my first taste of fantasy. I still like to re-read them if I want something light to waste a few hours with. The only way I find them evil is that they are able to capture your imagination and never let go (in my views), which could be bad to some people if they don't like something like that.

The BBC serialisation was a rather good adaption. Just because it's old, doesn't mean it isn't good.

I agree, the BBC series was really well done - I really enjoyed the books and they're something nice to reread many years later. Though the old fashioned English accents remind me of Enid Blyton somewhat :P

i didn't like it because there was too much weird crap in it like mythical animals and magic, i can see some but not that much

also i would have prefered it if it involved guns or something that makes the action fun but that's just my opinion

Just because it's old doens't mean it's good. If we're talking about the same one, it was cheesy and Lucy was abismal.

The former post is indicative of internet taste.

i read allof them too
but the last battle was a let down
i thought they were a good
series of books to read.
and i just thought of them
more of a fairytale then all of the
stuff that pullman puts into detail
