Official national examinations, some countries don't do them - you could maybe figer out what grade you are from this.
Pieces like:
Bach - "Minuet in G" is grade 1/2
Beethoven - "Fur Elise" is grade 2/3
Mozart - "Rondo alla Turca" and Beetoven's "Moonlight Sonata - first movemant" are grade 3/4
Beethoven - "Moonlight Sonata Second movemant" is grade 4/5
The Heart asks first From the film "The Piano" is grade 5/6
Many chopin pieces come in here.
7/8 - Moonlight Sonata Third movemant, Fantasia Impromptu by Chopin.
If you research these, then you could get an aproximation.

I play violin and piano. No idea what grade I'd be, mainly because I played for 4 years and then stopped since Mom didn't think my private teacher could teach me any more. I have a private teacher for violin now instead.

Michael, this is an example of you go off-topic, I think off-topics are good as the add conversation, but this statement is just to back up my point for another thread.
Anway,
Piano - 1 year
Harp - 6 months
Oboe - 5 months
Electric Bass - 4 months
Electric Guitar - 2 weeks
Alot in such a short space of time! lol.

Asking how long you have been playing these intstruments is not off-topic, but if you say so, then I withdraw. And yes, that IS a lot in a short time. Congrats.

I ENVY YOU ALL~!
i only play 1 instrument - PIANO (7 yrs.)
:: sniff :: all of u are so talented.....
eminatic
April 9th, 2004, 02:36 am
but if you play piano you will pick up any other instrument EASILY! piano gives u a better understanding of music cuz its like the most basic instrument (note-i dont mean its basic/easy to play) kinda like spanish is the most basic of all languages...and if u learn the basics it makes all the other stuff easy ^_^

Piano teaches you how to read music in both clefts. I picked up the bassoon very, very easily because I read bass cleft.

Hey, no problem! Just search in google for music notes site reading software and you should get a programme to help you read music.

hey
i've played:
piano
percussion
trumpet before
violin
acoustic/ electric guitar (own an acoustic and play around with electric at school)
and wanting to play alto sax.... =P
aznjoe: you've got some choices you can do to improve quickly...:
you can get flash cards and name the notes as fast as possible... play the song backwards (supposedly that helps. not literally, just play bar 40, then 39 and 40, 38-40, etc...) the classical get a teacher to teach you, the other classical teach it yourself, or get the program what's-his-name said.
I GARUNTEE, GOOD CHINESE PLANNING!!!!!

Like BlackMage said, all you need is more practice. Myself has problems to keep the rhythm while playing notes. Practice will solve this, too.

I've played...
Clarinet: 8 yrs this summer
Alto Sax: 6 yrs
Tenor sax: five months...although if you can play one sax you can most likely play them all!!
As for the not being able to read notes well...Just practice and keep trying. Sometimes it takes awhile. To be perfectly honest, I can't read the notes over the high C ( the one three lines above the staff) on my clarinet. And I've been playing for eight yrs!! I know the fingerings of the notes...I just don't know where they are...lol
michael
April 10th, 2004, 07:33 pm
Is the system for clarinet fingering the same for other woodwind instruments? For example, I play the flute and saxophone, and the system is very similiar.
Lovely_Spirit
April 10th, 2004, 08:25 pm
Actually, clarinet and sax fingerings are very close. that's why a lot of the times, if you meet someone who plays clarinet, they also play sax. clarinet is a Bb instrument, so you can play trumpet music on it too. Although, clarinet and sax...you can't do that. They come out in different keys and such. you'd have to transpose it or something of the sort. now, by system....what exactly do you mean? Clarinet music is read in Treble clef like sax and flute. And like I already mentioned above, the fingerings are very simialr. If that's what you meant, then i guess my answer to your question would be yes. And if i'm just being dumb and kind of slow (which i tend to be often..) sorry!
Sondagger
April 10th, 2004, 10:36 pm
On the woodwinds I played, the fingerings are totally different. I have an Alto Sax, and I play the bassoon. Bassoon fingerings ae so confusing! It's probably so different because the bassoon in a double-reed and the sax is a single reed.
AznJoe
April 10th, 2004, 10:51 pm
practice makes perfect...yadda yadda yadda....i know that...
getting the rhythm comes natural to me....dunno y...it just does when i play a piece...
mayb if i hear a good piece on piano...i'll practice reading again....havent heard a good piece yet tho....
Lovely_Spirit
April 10th, 2004, 11:07 pm
Double reeds I think are totally different from the rest of the woodwinds. From what I've seen in band anyways. But I think other than the basson and oboe, they're pretty closely related. unless i'm very much mistaken. Which would be pretty sad considering i've been in band for eight years!!
Lynx
April 11th, 2004, 01:14 am
havent heard a good piece yet tho....
Why are you playing then, or what was the reason that made you start playing the piano ? :?

it WAS Flight of the Bumble Bee..... but then i saw someone play it....
my confidence was SHOT~!
I learned to play Valse by Chopin in a few weeks but Flight of the Bumblebee looks WAY too complicated for me.....
Thats why I started playin anime/game pieces from Ichigos....so much easier for me.....
michael
April 11th, 2004, 08:45 pm
Flight of the Bumble Bee on the piano? Wow... that's tough. I can do it on the trumpet. It took me a LONG time to figure it out though.
Sondagger
April 11th, 2004, 09:37 pm
I found that for piano. It's very complicated. I would not recomend it for the average piano player. Only for the most advanced ones. I started it, and then I quit it for now because it was wasting my time.

Wow! That's so cool! I wish I could play like that!
60 songs is not too difficult. Well, for me, the longer it takes for me to figure out how to play the song, the more likely it is for me to remember it later. Try practicing the same songs, by memory, everyday. Add a song everyday, and you'll eventually become an archive!
Sondagger
April 12th, 2004, 03:50 pm
It takes me longer to memorize the songs. I can sightread and learn the songs in no time flat. It's just the memorization. It's my worst nightmare.

Piano - 10 years
Violin - 6 years
Flute - 5 years

I've tried a lot of other instuments too. I've learned the fingerings but I really can't play them at all
AznJoe

if i play a hard song for the first time, i memorize the first 2 pages like that~!......
....i practice it without even looking at it afterwards....i dunno how i memorize it....since its my first time ever playing it......
eminatic
April 13th, 2004, 02:59 am
lol same here its wierd how it kinda feels like u automatically memorize them...i always worry that ill forget some of them lol
AznJoe
April 13th, 2004, 03:02 am
yea, but you can always find the sheet music for it again and re-learn it and re-memorize it.....
but when i try to remember the song, like the jurassic park theme song the other day, i remember how it sounds like on piano so i just feel it out until i know it sounds correct....

I played the piano for about 10 years.... but I realized by playing piano, i got pitch-deaf *for example, singing, I used to get really out of tune, because piano doesn't require good pitch, you press the key, and the right sound comes out*
so I took up the violin *hopefully to improve my pitch and intonation* and have been playing it for about 8 years ^^

I have a few flutes and a guitar, but I don't play them as much as the piano. I've played piano for almost a year, but I'm not very good at it. And I hate sheet music. X_X When I'm using it, I can never bring myself to learn more than two pages of a song. I lose interest. All I ever learn is the introduction.
For some reason, learning songs by ear's a whole lot easier for me. Man, I'm weird.

I can somewhat play the piano, mainly saying... Once I know where to put my fingers, I'm good. I can get going pretty well, and I'm a wicked awesome sight-reader. ^___^ I'm not bragging or anything, it's just, I haven't met many people who can sight read very well.
