Excited, because I finally found out what sort of paint Ghibli uses - Nicker Poster Paint, only available in Japan, apparently. I've never tried traditional painting before (besides one watercolor), but I'm looking forward to trying now, especially considering where I'm staying. Look forward to some sweet paintings, guys! =D

Yar, that's what I'm doing. One of my hosts is actually an American, so he's learning too. We're going to a local (free!) weekly Japanese class together now. He took me today, and it was really fun. Much better than just studying from books! There were only three people in our group with our one teacher, so we had a lot of fun talking to each other and making lame jokes in Japanese and such. =D
And the town is pretty. There's a mountain in the back yard I'm itching to climb, hahah!

Aye. I'll probably start painting within the next few days. My hosts walked me around town today, and showed me where the local art shop is. If they have the type and brand I'm looking for, I'll probably start painting tomorrow. =D

And Japanese people are ridiculously nice. I was surprised to find out that the legendary Japanese politeness and hospitality isn't an exaggeration at all. Paraphrased from my facebook:


I had to take three flights and a train to get to where I'm staying, and I got lost every step of the way. The first time, a Chinese couple stayed with me for about an hour, showing me how to use a train system. The second time, a group of traveling Osaka University students talked to a bunch of Japanese bus line workers for me to figure out where I had to go, and marked my map for me and such. Took another fifteen minutes. The third time, a Japanese middle schooler walked me halfway to my destination, and carefully explained where to go. I got lost anyway, and had to ask for directions again from another Japanese lady. She told me to just hop in her car. We ended up at the wrong place, but she didn't complain. Took a half an hour of driving around and making phone calls before we found where we were staying.

I'm also impressed with how trusting everyone is, here. The woman who told me to just jump in her car surprised the hell out of me, and my hosts have left me alone in their house for the last few hours (they're out eating lunch, which they invited me to...I politely declined because I'm not hungry at all for some reason...), even though I've only known them a day. Everyone I've met has such a nice attitude! =)

Just ate a super-market Hokkaido icecream cone, which was delicious. The icecream was as thick as like....cream cheese. Really good. :3~
The super market was cool, too. Everything was super clean and well lit, and all the packaging was ultra-colorful, lol. They kept on playing the same thirty-second long annoying song over the speakers over and over again, though. My Japanese sucks, but it was obviously singing about how awesome happy fun time the market was, hahah. Obnoxious in a very uniquely Japanese way. X3

I love Japanese radio, though. All the songs are badasss.

lawl, nice. I met the cutest little girl on the planet the other day, Miyabi-chan! She introduced herself to me and then told me I was handsome and very cool in her awesome Engrish, lol. I drew a totoro for her, and then she asked if I could draw her portrait. When I told her I couldn't draw someone so cute, she covered her face and was all "kyaaa~" She plays piano and draws, and can juggle while riding a unicycle. The morning she left, she asked to play a card game with me. She taught me how to play, and then beat me like five times in a row in it. XD

After she finished kicking my ass in cards, she got up and sat behind me, and started massaging my shoulders for me. When she was done, I massaged hers for her, and then me, her, her mom, and my host talked for a bit before they left. We exchanged good-byes, and then she walked out the door with her mom. And then she ran back in to say bye to me again, hahah.

Basically, she was a real-life anime imouto-chan. I wish I could show her to all you guys. She was really just too adorable. X3

Tomo-chan(5), my hostess' son, is also adorable. He causes trouble all the time, and alwayd argues with his mom. I can barely speak any Japanese, but I can tell he's very smart. He speaks a bit of English, so I'm always messing around with him. Learning some Japanese from him too. He's happy to teach me, which is nice.

Also, went to a public bath a few days ago with Tomo-chan and his step-father. They had a hot water tub and a cold water tub. I'm pretty sure both of them would kill you if you stayed in either one of them too long. Amazingly hot/cold respectively, hahah.

Some guests gave me a kanji name the other day too, which was cool. We took like half an hour to decide on which characters to use, lol. When they tried giving me "oba-chan," I "KOTOWARU"'d them in my best dramatic Japanese voice, which they all thought was hilarious. They ended up giving me a badass name, with bushido, samurai, and sword in the kanji. Fun times, hahah.

Went out to dinner tonight with my host family. The owner of the restaurant took a picture of us, because I'd seen him a few days ago at another store. He was all "oh, you again," hahah.

Probably going to karaoke soon.

Basically, this trip has been pretty awesome so far. So many cool people!

I greeted a few girls at the convenience store today, and they got all giggly and asked me a question I couldn't understand. I apologized for my bad Japanese, and they giggled some more and "iijan iijan!"'d and "see-yuu!"d me.
Then I went to a cake shop, and the cake shop girl gave me a free piece of cake. "Presento!"
I told her she was very cute, which made her happy, lol.

I'm working very hard on my Japanese to make my harem-gathering a smoother process, lol. It's hard when the conversation can only go a few sentences before I run into a language barrier. X3

Having a lot of fun on this trip, though. Everyone is very friendly. I've heard from some people that Japanese people are xenophobic, but that definitely doesn't seem to be the case, at least in the area I'm staying in!

I haven't listened to too much, honestly. From what I've heard, it seems to be mostly Japanese music. There's definitely a healthy amount of American music playing too, though. They were playing School House Rock the other day. (What the hell? X3 )

As a Japan fanboy myself, I don't really understand your thoughts on Japan. I'm having a thousand times more fun than I thought I would here. Buying a phone tomorrow, because I made like ten new friends today, including an incredibly cute little Japanese girl who coincidentally speaks near-perfect English in a great British accent. She wants to study English/Japanese with me, so that's great. She's a lot nicer looking than my current language buddy, lol. Also met three Frenchmen. One's a hardcore anime otaku I totally geeked out with for a good half hour. One's a hardcore art otaku I totally geeked out with for a good half hour. And the last one looked like a pirate. He was cool too. Also met Mike, a fellow American with the meanest sense of humor I've seen in a long time. I can tell he thinks pretty much everyone is dumber than him, and he might be right. Allie from New Zealand got super offended because I told her she sounded Australian. Allie from America was super happy to hear a New England accent after going so long without one. Cho-san from China introduced me to the group! Fun times all around. Gonna have a lot of drinking buddies from now on.
Also, visited Temiya park on the other side of town yesterday, and it was one of the prettiest things I've ever seen. Totally gorgeous. Took a thousand photos, even though none of them do the area any justice.

So, yeah! So far, Japan's been amazing for me. It might not be the greatest place in the world for you, Neko, but I've met plenty of foreigners who've moved to Japan and love it here. It depends on what you want from your home. Otaru has been great to me so far!
I think if you want to have fun in Japan, you'll have it. As long as you have the energy and courage to look for it. I've been going out looking for fun every day, and I haven't been disappointed yet. Like I already said, I'm actually amazed at how great Japan is; I'd convinced myself it wasn't going to be anything special before I came here. But I was wrong!

It's just that I expected Japan to be totally different from any other place I've been and... it's not. Sure, a lot of things are different but a lot of things are exactly the same as any other big city I've been to. I'd probably been different if I went into the countryside but I currently have no plans to do so. I have to say, Hakone was quite the experience, especially when the rain stopped and there were mountains to be seen everywhere.

I guess I'm just a little bit disappointed because my expectations were too big. My fault :P

The scale in the bathroom says I've lost ten pounds since coming here. Gonna head down to the gym in a bit to see if that's correct. It doesn't seem true to me, but who knows? That'd be nice!
Also, when I came here, I only had living arrangements for one month with my current host. Yesterday she extended my stay two weeks, and today a friend of hers sent my picture to another mutual friend. "Do you like older women? Nao-san's thirty-two. But she looks a lot younger!" She does, too. Very cute!
They talked for a long time about me and her in Japanese. I understood a lot of it...very perverted. Topics discussed included how good looking she thought I was, how big her boobs were, and how lucky I was. Paizuri motions were made. Lots of laughing. My host asked me:
"Do you understand 'oppai?'"
"Yes, of course. It's one of the first words I learned!"
"Ehhhh, eroiii!!~!"

When they burst into laughter after a few more minutes of talking away in Japanese and I gave my host a puzzled look, she explained "I told her I was worried that you'd try something with Nao-san, and she told me she was more worried about what Nao-san was going to do to you. Gambarre!"

So, we'll see. This trip is getting weirder and weirder, hahah. Nao-san lives next to the Sky Tower in Tokyo, too. Should have fun there no matter what happens! =)
Also, bought my phone so I can get that cute Japanese-British girl's number, lol. And all the other friends I made the other day too, of course.
The art supplies I ordered should be here in a few days, too. Can't wait to start painting!

I'm surprised you had your eyes on Otaru as your first destination. You must have peculiar taste to choose the small city of Hokkaido instead of one of the three capital cities on the main island. I like that.
Mm, well I figured it'd be easier living in a small city since my Japanese is so bad. Also, I'm a fan of Japan's art, not of their giant cities, so I figured the countrysides that inspired a lot of the anime scenery I see would be more to my liking than one of the more famous cities. I think I made the right choice!

Looking at your travel reports, looks like you don't need to come back at all.
Hahah, if it weren't for my family, there's a good chance I'd stay. I still plan on visiting often. =)

My comprehension level isn't very high. I know a decent amount of vocabulary, but there's a lot to know! It was obvious what the conversation was about though, based on the words I knew, the looks they kept on giving me, all the laughter, and the "himitsu, himitsu!" when I asked what they were talking about.
And I don't know if it's the same with all Japanese families, but I feel more like family than a visitor here. Me and my hosts have become great friends already; I'll definitely be visiting again!

Going back to that sakura park today for a picnic with my hosts. Should be fun! It's a little chilly out, though. Cursed Hokkaido weather. X3

My host told me it was a picnic, but it was actually a big hanami party! A hundred or so people showed up and gathered around a bunch of grills and hotplates. Everyone brought their own food, but ate everyone elses. The whole thing was set up through word-of-mouth, so everyone sort of knew each other. It was really cool. Lots of yelling and drinking, and people kept on pushing food and drink on me (and everyone else, of course! Everyone was proud of their husband's/wive's/friend's cooking, for good reason; everything was delicious!). After we all sat around and ate and drank for a few hours, we headed up to a local shrine on top of a hill, where they opened up with a super sentai show starring the town's....sentai mascot? It was pretty great. I didn't understand what the hell was going on, but everyone was cheering and clapping, so I'm assuming the bad guy was vanquished. XD

Then a bunch of musicians got on stage....highlights included a song/comedy act, some girl playing a shamisen(I think?), and the older carpenter who had the idea for the hanami party, who played guitar and sang like a pro. I was really amazed by him, and told him so like fifty times, hahah. Lots of fun today!

Yeah, it was pretty fucking amazing. I had a ridiculous amount of fun there. We went with like twenty people, ran around Sapporo university's school festival, and drank a lot. The Yosakoi dancing and such itself was awesome, too. Also, we went to a cross-dressing maid cafe:

Probably going on a cross-Hokkaido drive with the guys from the Judo club and other friends the weekend after next. Next weekend camping out on the beach all night. Going to the hotsprings this weekend with the two Chinese girls currently living here (and the Japanese girl, if tomorrow goes well). Climbed Mt. Tengu yesterday (with the two Chinese girls). View was gorgeous. I'm becoming pretty amazing at Judo. Having fun every day.
