View Full Version : The Phantom of the Opera

I saw the trailer for it here, (http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thephantomoftheopera/trailer/large.html) and can't wait. I saw the London production in Her Majesty's Theatre a few years ago and fell absolutely in love with this musical. I listened to the flim's soundtrack on Rhapsody, and I think I won't be disappointed. The Phantom sounds differant from the one I heard, but he's not bad by any means. I think they added an electric guitar part in "The Phantom of the Opera" track. I was not pleased. Organs, orchestras, operatics, electric guitars. "One of the things is not like the others, three of these things are kind of the same." Anyway, tell us what you think of the Movie, Music, Book, and/or Play.

When I was in grade . . 5 - 8 (can't remember?) I acted in our school production . . not too bad for a bunch of kids, hehe. I was mainly a background/village person.

But anyways, I only found out last week a movie was coming out, and it looks good . . although it's obviously different from the theatrical experience, I'm interested in the close-ups and camera angle/techniques that only a movie can provide.

Book? Um . . I skimmed through the book (Gaston Leroux, right?), don't remember any of it, haha . . I also read part of a book that was written more recently by a woman (I think). Basically, it was a story about his childhood, leading up to the events in the play. Too bad I didn't get far in that book.

EDIT: I have a black/white movie version at home! Totally different from the play/musical . . and too comedic for the intended dark theme. Not too bad overall I guess, but still.

The movie has been kicking around for ages - glad it's finally come out. Originally they were going to have Antonio Banderas in it but I'm guessing he said no in the end. Going to see it when it comes out - the musical itself is amazing, my brother saw it on tour in Aus with Rob Guest as the Phantom and he was magnificent. I saw it in the UK on the West End and thought it was really good too (though nearly got run over by a taxi trying to get to the theatre before curtain up!) :D

I really wish they'd bring Jesus Christ Superstar back to the West End - one musical I would really love to see live!

HOLY COW!
Finally someone remind me of this movie!
OH MAN! it's the greatest and most unique movie i ever seen
okay when i first watched it...it was black and white...don't know if there are more recent ones(think there is)
but okay that was VERY VERY OLD, black and white, no sound. I usually just change channel but i was soo attracted for some reason and i started watching it. SOOO COOL the people in there walk kinda fast, like fast forward motion, and okay and they narrate the story from TEXT. so there'll be like a black screen and some TEXT of what the person is saying will be shown...then it will jump back to the motion part where ppl walk furiously

OMG it's the best movie, and OMG it has some GREAT vocal musics

o.0 text? No sound, but they had great vocals? How does that work out?

Your version is probably older than mine =P The one I saw had no singing (I think . . well, maybe it did) but you could hear them talk and everything. Like, aside from the lack of colour, it was just a regular movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036261/

ya it's strange, i think they don't want to charge the money for ALL the characters in that movie or something, and probably only hired those who can sing well, and when there's a conversation, they made is very simple so that they can be put in text on a black screen...very strange indeed but interesting

I went to see it yesterday - I think it's better if you watch it before seeing it on stage 'cause it pissed me off that they cut bits out and changed bits ;)

Things that annoyed the hell outta me:

Raoul - dammit, everyone else was British except him <_< His accent was totally out of place and drove me round the bend. He was a very good singer and his accent wasn't as noticeable during sung parts, but gah, why'd they have to give him so much dialogue X_X

Chandelier - why did they go to all that bother to change the scene and all the lyrics around so it crashes down during Don Juan instead of Il Muto? It just seemed totally daft to me - it had much more of an atmospheric effect in the stage production when it crashed down during Il Muto - the final climax of the Phantom's displeasure that his orders weren't followed.

Phantom portrayal - making him out to be more of a sleight-of-hand magician than a genuine enigma with strange powers. Hell, in the musical he was chucking fireballs around and the Punjab Lasso was hanging Raoul all by itself. In the film he just lost half his mystery the way they portrayed him X_X Also the man playing him was definitely a stronger actor than he was an singer - the scene on the rooftop with the rose was really moving but his singing lacked emotional depth for most of it. Maybe it's my personal taste as I expected him to be a lot more passionate - more angry and betrayed. It was only at the end that he really improved and gave it his all.

Things I really loved:

The Masquerade scene - heaps better than in the musical where they're limited by ease of prop movement. Much more glitz and the choreography was amazing. Most importantly they had an enormous chorus that produced a fantastic wall of sound for the choruses - loved it!

Opening - great camerawork describing the tumult backstage and of course, the overture ^_^

Madame Giry - w00t, if it ain't Queenie from Blackadder! (Miranda Richardson) Thought she was really well acted :D

Christine - where did they get her from?? She was brilliant! Much better than Sarah Brightman XD

Most of the cast had English accents - I loved the little moments where the stage helpers are nicking bottles in the Ball ;)

Phantom's lair - really nice, they could actually have water in it!

And the overall thing was good - the annoying bits were only minor compared with the whole atmosphere created. So yeah, it was a great movie and defo getting the DVD!

I personally think you shouldn't compare a musical to a film... they are so different... I never saw the musical but I think the film was great, I completely loved it. Maybe it wasn't perfect but I think it was good nonetheless.

Are you talking about finding a theatre that's playing the movie? If so I believe the Capital 6 on Robson (and Granville?) is still playing it.

Overall I loved the movie. I think it got off to a very rocky start, the first quarter or so probably could have been significantly better but at about Music of the Night then the whole thing gels. Seriously though, why was Christine riding a horse on the way down to the Phantom's lair?

Heh, I probably shouldn't - but it's like reading a book before seeing a film version of it. Should really be done the other way around - I can't help but compare it alas. I think if I hadn't seen the musical beforehand I would've loved it even more. I still think it was a really well made film, but I thought it a bit daft to mess with things like the chandelier falling time when there was nothing wrong with it in the first place ;) But hey, I get annoyed at things like that anyway - it's like when we did the Schools Edition of Les Miserables for our winter production, I love the musical to bits and I got so pissed off when they chopped out verses from the solos to make the whole thing shorter (yeah, I know, get over it - I'll shuddup now XD)

I mean, a film can do things with settings and stuff that are much harder to do on stage - I think the Masquerade scene in the film was miles better than it was in the musical, and they had proper water and stuff in the Phantom's Lair which they can't do on stage too :)

Hmm, I listened to an MP3 of the musical version of one of the songs.. and I can't say the phantom sounded convincing at all to be honest. In fact, it sounded as if they got some random wimp with a posh accent to sing his part. Sorry if I offend anyone here, but it didn't sound like a mysterious phantom, but like a schoolboy singing, unlike the in the film. In fact, the musical version of this particular song (Phantom of the Opera) totally lacks any emotion, even more than the Film version. In my opinion anyway.

Edit: and in the musical the church organ sounds like it's been played using a Casio Keyboard, and that is never a compliment

Edit2: Apparently the version I downloaded was crap ~_~ *waits for Maz to give a good version* lol

Da movie was AWESOME!!!!! Phantom had some problems with spreading his vowels while he sang, but he definitely did a good job with it. His singing voice is worse than the guy on the CD with Sarah Brightman (who is AWFUL to listen to, by the way), but he puts more emotion into the music so it evens out. Raoul is sooo hot....*wink* So is Phantom. The good half, I mean. Heh. Christine did great!!!!! I cried at the end....I don't normally do that a whole lot, but I did....

The book is ok. Generally I like the portrayal of Erik as slightly human in the new movie better than the wacko in the book, but he does have a pretty cool torture chamber in the novel. Raoul and Christine also annoy me in the book, they both act like they're no more than kids instead of the adults they are. Mme Giry is better in the movie. ^^ Basically the book is ok but I didn't find it a great read. My younger sister did, so I guess it depends on you taste.

Wanna see the musical....Only ones I've seen live are Les Miserables (I love it!!!) and 32 nd Street.

Alfonso de Sabio

Sarah Brightman has one of the most horrific, unnatural voices I've ever heard. Michael Crawford just oozes nauseating egotism. If they starred, audiences all over the world would be trembling in puddles of their own vomit. (Well apparently not, since they were wildly successful on broadway.)

EDIT:

Brightman's recording of Webber's Pie Jesu is a perfect illustration of how queer her voice is.

The story of The Phantom of the Opera is about obesession, and i think one of the reason why the music is so emotional and beautiful is because of Andrew Webber's obesession towards Sarah Brightman.

It had some obsessive themes, but I think the story is much more about being suspenseful than anything else. There was a whole lot of "tout à coup's" and "soudain's."

Yeah, I think it's hilarious that they broke up.

Right before the phantom starts to sing "Stranger Than You Dreamt It" (when he's yelling at Christine) Does anybody notice that he seems to have picked up a slight mexican accent??

Neko Koneko

I'd rather believe it's Scottish accent if it indeed does change cos Gerard Butler is Scottish. Also, the Phantom was wearing a wig, not just a mask. In the stage version he wears a hat if I'm not mistaken.

Alfonso de Sabio

I saw it in London about four years ago, and although he had a hat in the posters, I don't think he wore one on stage.

Yes. And the phantom's face kept changing; sometimes he's got this really weird vein over his cheek... and other times it's not there anymore. <_< I have friends who are absolutely obsessed with the Phantom, so I have made it my business to find everything that is wrong with/crazy/weird about the Phantom, and tell them about it so they'll stop swooning. Because I'm evil.

The book was better. B) I thought it was funny that the movie got all the details right, the torture room, the enchanted violin, the Phantom's costume to the masquerade, the magical lassoo, everything... and yet they managed to screw up on all the big things. Andrew Lloyd Weber managed to completely destroy all the flavor and charm of the origional. Granted, he did infuse it with a lot of passion and life, but it is absolutely nothing like the origional.

The torture chamber scene was non-existant in the musical.

I finally got around to seeing this movie, and WOW it was really good. I haven't seen the play live, although I really want to, however I do own the soundtrack. My only dissappointment was that the Phantom's voice wasn't what I was expecting, although I was unfairly comparing it to the soundtrack. Other than that, the music was excellent and it seemed like a great adaptation.

If you ever come to the UK I'll take ya to see it in the West End - then you'll see how much they cut out in the movie XD

I've seen it around LA but it's always incredibly expensive, like $150 a seat x_x.. oh well, *puts on agenda for whenever I can afford to go to the UK*

They're only £15 here XD That's about $30 so no worries there :P In the UK you can get half-price theatre tickets - they're restricted view but I personally don't reckon the tradeoff's too bad :) And damn, it's worth it - the musical is awesome :D

^ True dat. I saw Phantom twice during the week and a half that I was in London a few years ago. The first time I was a few rows back from the stage, right under the chandelier, but the second time I got the half-priced tickets and it was still awesome. There was a pillar just to the left, but I could deal with it.

Music was good, film was bad. I'd much rather see the musical, if I ever got the chance.

That's the problem I had when listening to the musical version after I heard the phantom in the film. I think the voice in the film fits him perfectly while the voice I heard from the stage version was... rubbish. x_x

I think it's also a matter of being used to something.

In a small setting a musical would be nice, because the sound can project pretty well. In a big setting, without a microphone you can't really hear the singer sing, with a microphone...some part you just can't sing with a microphone because the note is so high.

So overall i think film is better because it's edited.

Yeah you're probably right.. because most Phantom fans from back in the day are hooked on Michael Crawford's (the first stage Phantom) voice. I have to admit he has a far better singing voice, and he actually better matches the phantom as he is described in the novel... as in, sounding somewhat genderless and angelic. My beef with Crawford is that, at least on the soundtrack, he shows little emotion. At least Gerard showed real despair when he needed to in song. And I must admit the manly voice is more seductive... it's not the phantom of the novel's voice but the next best thing. To depict the Phantom's voice accurately they'd probably have to do some actual manipulation to the audio to make the voice that otherworldly (sort of like they did to the Diva in the Fifth Element).

I adore the movie but I still think they should have "uglified" Gerard more... oh no, fear my horrible 3rd degree burns. He was a freaking living corpse basically in the book, they should have tried harder. >)

I think I was like 10 when the musical was on so I didn't get to see it, but I love the movie! There are a few songs from Phantom of the Opera that I absolutely love and never even realised were written for the musical until I saw the movie -_- Just goes to show what an uncultured swine I am! ^_^

I bought the sheet music book a while back *hugs the book*. The music is challenging to play but well worth the time and effort learning ^_^

Yeah, that's why it's been running for almost 20 years now, with every single seat sold every evening

I think it's funny that everyone's always complaining about the singing of Gerard butler, while no one seems to notice that Emmy Rossum or wotshername can't act =P she had the same clueless look on her face throughout the whole film XD Singing was great though.

Lol, just not my type of music I guess. It resembles an opera to much, and if I wanted that kind of show, I would watch an opera then..

I noticed on the American 1 disk dvd art, there is a ghost in the back, and a child face in the little boat the two are in. Just some things I found..

Funny, I looked up some American DVD art and can't find anything of the sort. I bet you're just blabbering again.

Btw, what's the name of the song she sung in front of an audience wearing a white big dress? Loved that one.

^_^ A thread for one of my great obsessions!
Hmm...my cousins, sister, and I always end up finding something funny about this movie, because we can, and we can't help ourselves.
Emmy Rossum's clueless look is near priceless, especially before the Phantom takes her to his lair...XD

We also don't like Raoul, particularly one of my cousins because of her rampant obsession with all things Phantom :D. He's too American for his own good in the movie.
^_^; I like Madame Giry in this movie (her hair! It's so long and braided!) because, well, she's just cool like that. Maybe it's her aura or something...

Oh, and the actress for Meg Giry is older than Emmy...

*is listening to soundtrack*

track 2 overture still has to be my fav. but kinda dread it ending b/c you randomly hear Carlotta "vocalizing" during the beginning of "think of me" bleh

And the movie left out a coupla verses in "the phantom of the opera" and kinda changed Raoul's verse in "think of me".

..just little annoyances

On the OST the overture is the first song, and you don't hear Carlotta in it or in think of me. Maybe the American OST is different from the one I have, although I kinda doubt that.

huh?

in mine, the Prologue is the first.

then overture, and then the beginning of Think of me is Carlotta singing the Hannibal song.

It depends on if you have the single cd soundtrack or the dual cd soundtrack. I have the single one and it starts with Overture, but the special edition cd set starts with the Prologue. *misses not having "Stranger than you Dreamt It" and "Why So Silent" on the regular soundtrack*

Our family just rented this on DVD last month. I LOVED IT! I didn't know why they were singing always at the beginning. Then I cought it after the first 15 mins or so. A modern Opera!

I particuarly loved the Phantom's characters voice. Such a rich sound !

Alright. Just my interpretation, it kind of was like an opera to me. I guess opera's and musical's have different singing types? Or is it because it was screen play, not on a stage?

Neko Koneko

It's a musical, but some songs have the style of opera songs.

Kalile Alako
December 29th, 2005, 10:55 pm
Or an operetta; that's another name for a play where half the spoken lines are sung. Weber was going for an operatic style, because the play and the book were both about the opera and its workings.

An interesting thing to note is that Andrew Lloyd Weber really doesn't have any sort of grasp of opera... something that I was aware of even though I have only played/listened to a very few operas or arias. Christine was totally inappropriate for the part, something that made me extremely unhappy. Her voice... well, it's certainly NOT opera. The woman singing Carlotta had a much higher quality voice, and was obviously more suited to her part, so they had to make Carlotta sound bad by making the woman intentionally sound like crap, which is very obvious as well. It's too contrived.

I also find things that are funny, mostly because a friend of mine had briefly an unhealthy obsession with the Phantom, and I've seen the movie eighty or so times. I say unhealthy because it's not good to be obsessed with a fifty-something year old pervert who has been hanging around watching a little girl sleep since she was seven, and who lives in the basement. And I don't like Madame Giry, if only because Mr. Weber completely omitted the coolest character in the book, the Persian, and replaced him by making Madame Giry into a main character.

Does anyone know the significance of the Roman bust with the eyepatch? It's in his lair... there's this half blinded statue that seems like it means something... but I can't remember why I think so. :\

The Phantom's singing in "The Phantom of the Opera" (where they walk down the basement for the first time) was aweful, but great in Point of no Return. Emmy Rossum's singing was absolutely top notch though. Sarah Brightman's use of vibrato in her voice scares me =/

Also, you can spot the sleeve of a cameraman and a piece of filming equipment in the Phantom's Lair =P
