View Full Version : Most hated classical composer...

Too many composers for a poll^^

The one I hate the most would have to be Mozart... because his pieces require so much precision and exactness. I like sliding shifts and dramatic music, like in Massanet's meditation or pieces by Fritz Kreisler, the complete opposite of Mozart, with his frilly fluffy music...

Unluckly, because his peices are like this, like 70% of all the auditions for whatever that i go to require Mozart...

I don't "hate" any composers. I just don't find some of their music appealing to me. :) But I still respect their genius! :D

If I had to pick a "least favorite" composer... it would probably be Tchaikovsky. I just can't stand how his songs are bright one second then the next they turn melancholic... :P I dunno... he did make up some great songs, but I just don't like his overall style. :) But he was still innovative and a genius, in my opinion. :D His music merely doesn't fit my fancy.

something irritates me about music from "classical" composers, such as Mozart, etc... can't quite place it. The are obviously geniuses, but something doesn't quite do it for me. It's odd, because I love soundtracks and stuff like that. Maybe classical just lacks the emotion that those pieces have.

I don't see what all the excessive talk about Mozart is, so I put my vote on him.

I don't have any hated composers as such - but my Mum has the WORST ever version of "passages from Carmen", it sounds like a little toddler discovered a percussion box and it drives me up the wall X_X We nicknamed it "Tin Can Carmen" :P

i really tend to not hate any style of music. personality-wise, by all accounts, vivaldi was a jackass.

vivaldi was a jackass

why you say that?

he was supposedly famed for his greed and a bad personality. some say he was nicknamed "the red priest" because of his red hair, but others claim he was named so because of his greed.

I don't really like his music either.

Mozart's style doesn't appeal to me. Actually anything in the Classical era doesn't appeal to me, save for a couple few.

classical era is pretty sophisticated. I have to say it is kinda hard for some ppl to like. I like it. I think the greatest era will be Romantic and Post-Romantic period. Where there are so less boundaries and composers are freely to express themselves better than when it's in Bach period

I read an entire 200 page biography on Antonio Lucio Vivaldi and never saw anything about him that resembled "greed"... He was named "the red priest" because of the red hair that ran in his family, which he inherited from his father. His first burst of popularity came from "L'estro Armonico", a very liberal opus for orchestra and solo violin which contained very unique and unprecedented solo passages. In fact, he wrote almost all of his works for the Ospedale della Pieta, an "orphanage" for the daughters of wealthy men who didn't have always want to keep them around. His fame was peaked when he released "Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'invenzione", the first four concerti (and the four most well-known of the bunch) of which were a.k.a. "The Four Seasons". After this, his fame dwindled as he journeyed through Europe with a "mistress", which was why the church sometimes looked down at him. He was free of most church duties because he allegedly had asthma; he left the priesthood because of this. He died a pauper's death in 1743.

I don't see how he was seen as "greedy" at all. Sure, he did re-incorporate some of his previous work into his (at the time) most recent compositions, and he did (over-)use a few typical chord progressions that sound instantly "Vivaldiesque" today, but he wasn't greedy, was he?

Actually, I'm rather surprised that no one has mentioned Richard Wagner (He of "Ride of the Valkyries") yet. Here was a guy who often refused to pay back loans to friends and had illicit affairs with several women -- including Cosima Liszt; the wife of his best friend, conductor Hans von Buelow, and daughter of his most generous patron, Pianist/Composer Franz Liszt -- among his numerous sins...

(To be spoken in the style of an elementary-school educational film):

"...Richard Wagner's music, when heard in small-to-moderate amounts, can
be a part of a healthy and happy lifestyle. However, excessive exposure
-- such as listening to the full 16-hour "Ring" cycle non-stop -- can
result in nausea, vomiting, delerium, seizures and intercranial
hemorrhaging often leading to permanent deafness, brain damage or
insanity, coma and a slow, horrible and painful death..."

I suppose a better topic would have been "most disliked classical composer's music"
thats more or less what i meant.

And I dunno about soundtracks invoking more emotion then classical music, granted there are some very emotional sountracks out there, but I think peices like Meditation or Beethoven's Symphonies are much more emotional then say, the Lord of the Rings suite. What i typically find is that if i'm just listening to something while doing something else, then classical music tends to be rather boring, but if i stop and just listen to the music, focused, it seems to be so much more emotional.

Of course it probably depends on the person...

i respect Wagner for his opera, i mean i don't like learning him, but i really like some of his operas.

Make no mistake. I love Wagner's music too. But when you read about how he'd shit all over anyone -- enemies *and* friends -- to get what he wanted (metaphorically speaking, of course...) without giving it a second thought, it tends to be even *more* amazing that he was able to write such incredibly beautiful works.

Hm, I don't really "hate" any. But I must say I quite dislike playing "Sleigh Ride" by Mozart on the violin. There's a tad too many high-pitched notes and are played quickly and it still sounds kinda messy. Like someone mentioned earlier, it kind of has to be played "just right".

*sigh*

support why they're overrated

because so many people think that they're fantastic, their music is the only music any of the music stores in my area stock, their music is always played on the radio- on all of the piano diploma lists, their music takes up about a fifth of the page. And they aren't even that great- i'm not saying that anyone could compose anything anywhere near as good as what they did, but it's still not that fantastic when you look at other composers- and all of the Chopin works i've ever played- it's like he deliberately tried to make the piece as difficult as possible, rather than thinking about the actual sound.

They are probably not overrated, it's just that so many people love them. That may make them overrated to some people (who don't listen to classical music, like myself..).

I agree with Noir on that. I think hating a composer because you find his pieces too difficult is quite childish actually, you can't hate a person for what they create, that's just retarded. You can dislike or even hate the work, but that doesn't give you the right to even say you hate the composer, if you don't like his work just don't listen to it or don't play it. If you have to play beethoven for your piano lessons or you hear him on the radio all the time, blame your piano teacher and blame the radio station and not the composer, the classical composers are all dead by now so they didn't decide that their piece had to be played on the radio all the time. In face, they didn't have radios so saying you hate someone because somebody else uses their music in a way you don't like is just plain stupid.

Isn't that amazing, though? They've been dead for hundreds of years, and they still pop up on the radio and have countless fans. Also be aware of that on their time, there were no computers, radio, TV or anything like that. Despise this, they got their pieces known around the world. There has to be a pretty good reason why they still 'live', so to say. Will Eminem be played and remembered in 200 years from now? I will laugh right to the face to the one who believes so. :heh:

I'm totally agree with you noir7. But they are some componists I dislike. Especially those, who had written "Concertos for students" like Oscar Rieding for example. The concertos are boring and it seems that the componist can't show his feelings or emotions because he has to be attentive to the student's skills.
Although this pieces are good for students who just have started playing an instrument I don't recommend them playing a piece from them.
It's just a big disappoitment.

Instead of playing pieces from Rieding( op.26 for exapme) it's better to play a Concerto from Vivaldi (op3)

i dont hate any but the least likeable composers for me is bach because all his songs requie you to it with the correct figering on a piece and the melody keeps changing in his. there not one line that is arepet of the orginal lines for the inventions.

It's not that torture. I can explain you why he composed so difficult pieces:
Tschaikovsky wasn't a violin player so he arranged pieces that he composed without paying attention to the player's skills. He has composed it on his piano and after that he transcripted it for violin.
Similar to Tschaikovsky is Brahms. He did the same too.

Sousa's not a classical composer...and marching bands always own orchestras.

I don't hate any composer/compositions in particular except chorales and the ones who composed too many. They're extremely boring and I'd rather do longtones. Not much I can say for writers of other types of songs.

I'd say Sousa is classical just like Copland is classical. I mean, they're not from that period, but they wrote "classical" music. Just like you'd call Bach or Fauré "classical."

I don't like 'stiff' classical. I like things like Pachelbel's Canon in D and Beethoven's Toccata in C minor. I like the Muldeau suite. I don't like the music composed for dances and stuff-it seems very stiff and unnatural.

The "Muldeau suite"??? There's a Symphonic poem, "The Moldau (Vltava)", from Bedrich Smetana's 6-part cycle of symphonic poems called "Ma Vlast". (My Country.) Is this what you're referring to? It's one of my favorites as well... :music:
