This seems kind of similar to some threads, I guess... Does anyone feel as if all the other composers are better than you, that you're a complete failure? I do very often... It seems like it happens whenever a new composer joins... Then i finally get my act together and another composer comes on and ruins my confidence... <sigh> Mebbe i'm just depressed *pops prozac into mouth* :crybaby:  :( :/ ^_^ XD well, I think it's not. I only feel better than the people that have almost no compositions, or very short ones... My longest is like a minute and 5 seconds. ALSO, COME CHECK MY THINGYMABOBBER THREAD!!! NEW JAZZY COMPOSITION!!!! (I kinda need help, tho)

Plenty of people probably feel the same as you do, even some of the greatest must of had their doubts. But in the end, they had managed to pull their act together. It's like daring yourself. I checked out your Composition thread and you don't seem to be afraid to post music and you shouldn't be, I think.
I don't think that it is necessary to advertise your thread either. :boo:

Yup, I fee it a lot of the time.
Anyways, on the one hand, comparing yourself to others helps you improve, but on the other hand, if it prevents you from even composing at all, then you've got a problem. Solution? Just don't visit the composition forum until after you're done writing the song =)

All the time. You know why that is? because there always is someone who's better than you.

Too true Noir. Too true... but the way you said it could have been toned down a bit.

Why? That would just hide the whole purpose of it.

Well yeah, it's true, there always is someone better than each of us, which is why we should never stop trying...there's always room for improvement isn't there...

I don't always feel like everyone's better than me, but there are times where I feel I'm not doing a good job. I feel people are getting ahead of me in their skill level. So I just work harder, and the results I get are more pleasing. Rather then looking at their accomplishments, I try and make my own and comapre my peices to my accomplishments, not theirs. And that always helps me!

On a more competetive point of view, the idea is to be better than everyone else. Of course, you always run into those better than you, and that's what keeps you going. Not the other way around.
If no one's better than you, then you're stuck in one level. You can't go higher.

Yeah, lots of people are better than me, but everyone has their own unique composing style that they're really good at and mine is different from theirs so it doesn't really bother me that much. I couldn't ever hope to replicate someone else's composing style, nor would I want to - I've worried about others being better than me in things like competitions but I've realised now that all you wonderful composers are just ordinary people achieving in your own way, and that I can be like that too :)
(I seriously need to feedback on more of other people's compos though... I'm a total feedback lover so I should really return the favour in kind *shoots the RP* ;))

Are we aloud to say who in particular on this forum that we feel inferior to? I really want to, cuz it'll make me feel better, let loose some steam.
I definitely feel inferior to Alphonse, I actually did a poll amongst my friends, where I saved what I though was my best composition and Alphonse's worst composition on a disk. I got a little over forty people to vote, and I got only 2 votes saying that mine was better, one being what I voted for, and on that my friend voted for because he knew it was mine.
Next Noir7. In the genre that my friends say that I do best in (New Age),since his music sounds most similar to my style (I'm terribly sorry if that was ofensive), and then he came out with that soundtrack that was so beautiful, that my best compositions simply pale in comparison.
I really don't feel inferior to anyone else, otherwise I feel about equal or better.
Wow, that felt really good. ^^

no one here should feel inferior to anyone else, your all great composers so far. Besides, its perfectly find to accept failure. ist's not ok to accept not trying.
(can't you tell its my first day here? :heh: )

Wow... here I thought this would be a one-time thing to get me out of my depression streak... :D Well, I certainly think that a mushy-mushy thread once in a while isn't too bad. See, Ureshii Gaki feels better. Anyway, I realize this wasn't too wise. Of course someone (if not many people) are better than me, and I no longer have a problem with it, as long as I advance myself as a composer. Since this seems to be a problem with a lot of people, I'd ask mods not to lock it. Thanks! :P

What does this low-quality song have to do with the topic though?

Ureshii Gaki, check your PM =P
Um . . I feel inferior to those composers who write modern music, you know, anything non-classical that deviates from the traditional harmony. I wish I could get my ears to hear/appreciate the new stuff, but I can't. So I feel stuck in my current position.
But meh, in the end, none of us should feel inferior to anybody. We just all do our own thing, and it's all good!

so true. That's life, right?
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
As well, you will always be better than someone, so there is that boost and depress of confidence int he same round. ;)

Uh-huh! As long as you try your best, you can't be sad! Also it depends on a person's opinion whether or not you are better than someone else otherwise everyone would be into hip-hop, rock, jazz etc. and not hate anything. I'm sure you can compose as well as alphonse one day if you keep trying your best! that goes for everyone. Sorry Al I'm not trying to turn people against you if it seems that way :heh: People just need a little encouragement to carry on with something like in animé!

You don't ~ Everyone has a warn metre there, but you can't see the others'. Your warn-o-metre (omg..) is set on 0%.

Actully I feel their are a lot of people better than me. Many people say my music is really good and really like it but I always say I wish i could compose like the other composers who can make really intricate music. So you khno0w what I do when this happens I just try not to be competitive and play the music for myself and my own enjoyment. and Al was right, becuase when you compare yourself with others it does hinder your music
:D ^_^

But then again, competition can serve as an impetus to improve your own abilities, no? If you are loftily smug about your compositional skills, there'd be much less motivation for self-improvement. Many people probably despair because they view the difference in skill as an insurmountable mountain. But if you take one careful step at a time, eventually you will span and progress, as long you have the willpower and patience to do so.
