If you don't count the stuff in anime, there has been a big dropoff in

composers in Japan. The big one that comes to mind right now is Yoko Kanno but

she is known mostly for her work with the Seatbelts in "Cowboy Bebop". Other

than that alot of stuff that comes from Japan is either:

1. Techno

2. Rip offs of Led Zeplin

Could anyone tell me where have all the good Japanese composers gone?

kajiura? yuck.

anyways, songs are often labelled after the singer rather than the composer, so composers don't really get a lot of publicity. SIN, for example, composed sore ga ai deshou and kimi ni fuku kaze, but nobody really knows that since it's often attributed to shimokawa mikuni, the singer.

what do you have against techno, anyways?

well, i find kajiura to be a little hit-and-miss. sometimes her songs are good, but sometimes they're just way too messy. well, most of her violin/acoustic guitar stuff are pretty good, but once she gets into synths and electric guitars, i can't stand it. maybe i'm just not into the style. but really, i love kanno a LOT more. oh, hisaishi too, although he's only strong in a orchestral setting, whereas kanno can do anything from rap to orchestral to jazz.

gand: but ishida isn't a composer, she's a singer. this is a good example of when the song is more widely known under the singer than the composer.

I think Kajiura is a great musician... but I didn't like her songs on her Fiction album. I don't really like her vocal songs, 'cause they're all too boring. Much prefer her anime works.
But undoubtedly, Kajiura works best with strings. I really liked b.t. and grandpas violin from hacksign.

I personally think "The Pillows" own Led Zeppelin, and every other American rock band out there....but w/e....also, hisaishi and yoko-kanno are godlike

No way!! Check out some of Hisaishi's older work with synths. The soundtrack to "Robot Carnival" is really good. But yeah, Kanno can work well with all kinds of genres.

Here are some of my favorites.. the're around, though some attract less attention.

- Isaku Fujita
- Ichiko Hashimoto
- Joe Hisaishi
- Haruomi Hosono
- Yuki Kajiura
- Yoko Kanno
- Hiroki Kikuta
- Kitaro
- Koji Kondo
- Yasunori Mitsuda
- Nobuo Uematsu

Jupter, I'm not sure what you mean by "why hasn't [modern japanese music] caught up with the rest." I think there has been a lot of really nice music coming out of Japan in recent years. However, modern, post-modern, classical, jazz, and other music styles are largely overlooked because they are not pushed as much as popular music like j-pop and j-rock.

I'd have to say Nobuo Uematsu hasn't gone anywhere! Atfirst I thought he REALLY retired until i was looking at a Nobuo Uematsu site saying he opened his own gaming company I think...but then again he still helps compose final fantasy music...I think...(I think I wouldn't enjoy FF as much if I know Nobuo didn't even help compose..) Another composer of my favorites; Michiru Oshima ^^ beautiful music indeed =3! Hm who else...composed a Inuyasha song ini the CD I have...errrr hm...ah yes! Kaoru Wada!

Er...we aren't talking about those kind of composers are we...?

Though it's there choice if they want to catch up with the rest! What if all music around the world is the same? ugh...the world would end if there wasn't much variety...-_-

What do you mean catch up in modern music - are you referring to the vast majority of mind numbing pop/rock/rap music that we have in the States today? Somehow, I can't see that as progress...
