Lain had a pretty annoying dub, and of course DBZ. Dutch dubs are generally bad.

Agreed aznjoe. Love Hina is probably the worst dub I have EVER watched. I first saw the making of love hina.... then I got curious and snagged a dual audio version of the christmas special... I never made that mistake again.

Kai Doh Maru has some of the most wretched dubbing I've ever heard.
I actually got angry watching it. It wasn't just annoying, it was soo awful I could barely follow the story.......the film itself was a piece of crap anyway.... <_<

worst dub? SHAMAN KING! they totally mutilated it! !!!!!!!!! omg, it was so depressing, I could barely watch it. ~____~ For one thing, they changed manta's name!! Now it's...*shudder*...MORTY! morty!?!??!?! I mean..wt?!?!? And they totally screwed around with Yoh's personality...you know how he wanted to be the shaman king so that he could "live an easy life and listen to music all day" or something? Well, instead, they turned him into some bratty little punk that wants to be a shaman king so that he could become a ROCK STAR. I mean, what?!?! That's what every snotty little kid wants! And they make Yoh seem arrogant, and .. ARGH. I just hate it. ~___~ Worst. Dub. Ever. I mean, I think the CCS dub is even better than the Shaman King dub, and that's saying a lot, since the CCS dub completely sucked.

On the other hand, some decent dubs I've seen is the Trigun dub, and the Ranma dub.

GOD... Love Hina's dub bothered me horrendously... 'cept for Motoko. =^_^=
Motoko's cooool! =^.^=
They really could have tried harder to find better Dubbers... like for instance... giving the project to someone who knows what they're doing, LIKE ADV.
The manga was so much better... I'll stay happy with the voices in my head. =*_*=

Actually, La Blue Girl was pretty shabbily done, too. =>>= =<<= What? ==

They effed up Shaman King to no lengths... Toa Len? No... How about not...
And Anime Works screwed over the first Yu Yu Hakusho movie worse than Funimation ever could! And Funimation did HORRIBLE!
Kenshin was bad... They screwed up how he talks sooo bad. Makes me want to throw something at the screen. And they messed with Seta-chan's BEAUTIFUL voice! ;_;
Yu-Gi-Oh! was bad, too. The way they cut out SO many things. They took out a WHOLE effing arc. Sorta pissed me off...
Cowboy Bebop could have been better, but it was ok...

Actually, Sailor Moon was the best dub ever. Not saying dubs are good, but it was something you didn't wretch at... I don't know which Sailor Moon you were watching, but the one I saw was helluva good for an american redo... The only part I think they censored too much was the relationship between Michelle and Amara (using american names as I am lazy). I think it was mightly thick of the company to make them into something they aren't.

because some people can't read fast enough/miss out on stuff while reading the subtitles, and dub doesn't do that..
DBZ is just about as bad as it gets with dubbing, imo

when ever I buy anime on DVD I always watch it in japanese with english subtitles because I can't stand things when they are dubbed. but now I read the subtitles with out even knowing it. even when I watch stuff in english I read the subtitles at the bottom with out even knowing it.

nothing is worse than watching the dub with kage. Pretty much everytime someone says something she looks at you and giggles.

I think I'm going against some sort of Otaku code here, but I like dubs. If dubs are done well, I can enjoy them. I still prefer the original Japanese track, but a good dub can help you introduce an anime to people who aren't as adept at reading subtitles as most of us are.

I dunno, but people make a living trying to localize anime for us; they've dubbed it, but also left the jap track to get the original impact of it.

Now this may seem a bit blasphemous, but I was watching the Fruits Basket dub today (I got the DVDs for my b-day ^_^) and I found the english to be more emotionally evoking than the japanese. My japanese language skills are still very amateur, and were even moreso when I first watched Fruits Basket, so hearing people actually voice their angst and feelings in a language I can understand instead of just reading a translation and listening to a foreign language.

I get the impression from some people that you can't be a real anime fan if you watch dubs, even though you are watching the same thing. I appreciate the original and the recreation, because just as much work has gone into the audio in either situation.

Sorry about this, but I get emotional about this, when people have a superiority complex and think they are too good to watch dubs, or think that dubs MUST be worse because they aren't the original. The truth is, any changes are made to fit our culture, so we can "get" the jokes, or puns which wouldn't make sense.

I had a dream to be a voice actor, but I would never make it in the japanese voice world, and I was content with being an english seiyuu, but what's the point if the people who I want to entertain are disgusted by my attempts to bring them what they want.

So my main message is "There are dubs that are low quality, as there are low quality animation or anything else. Not all dubs are bad, and it's ok to enjoy them"

Oh yeah, I think the worst dub is the original Vampire Hunter D ^_^

Some dubs are good. The Wolf's Rain dub is really good and is almost word-for-word. But as far as the worst goes, um, I guess FLCL because they took out alot of things and DBZ...because....they gay-a-fied it..

sometimes word for word doesn't always work.

I was watching Fruits Basket and at one point Hatori tricks Yuki and Kyo into smiling by asking them:

"ichi to ichi wa?" (1 + 1 =)

the answer in japanese is ni, which you basically smile in order to make that syllable

unfortunately, in english, "two" does not make you smile, so they had to change it to:

"What is the last letter of the alphabet?"

"zee," which is another "smile syllable"

but if you ask me, it's "zed" <_<

i've only watched fansubbed inuyasha eps, and i LOVE the voices!!! and because they are fansubbed by ppl who don't speak english, i can forgive them. i heard that the dubbed voices make the characters sound 30 yrs old or something, and i met someone at a convention and they pronounced kagome "ka-GOE-may" *gag**shudder* i almost short circuited damn it!
but i thought flcl had a pretty good dub. also, i really, REALLY don't like kenshin's japanese voice, ugh, TOO GIRLY!!!!!!! they shoulda got a guy to do it!
in king of bandit jing, i hate his english voice!! too old!!! japanese voice, much better, mm-hmm *nods head solemly*

the thing about kenshin being girly, that's just something they do in anime.

Referring back to Fruits Basket (because it's all I've been watching lately) Yuki's voice in done by a woman. You'd think it'd make sense to have guys do guys voices and girls do girls voices.

Then again, a woman does Bart Simpson's vioce, but Bart is ten, and Yuki is 17 (and kenshin is probably even older)

Asher
May 23rd, 2004, 07:04 am
i think having a woman do yuki's voice makes it more comical, it fits the whole "prince yuki" image hehehehe, i love yuki!! *sparkly eyes* but as he is so pretty, it makes him even more feminine and bishonen.

on kenshin, he's.....wait for it......28 freaking years old!!!!!!! *falls over*

Now that I think of it, why are DBZ reruns still on YTV (or whatever channel it's on for you) if everyone hates it?

These things always confuse me. Why, if DBZ is so crappy, has it occupied the 8:00 and 8:30 time slots on YTV for as long as I can remember?

But then again he does look like a girl doesn't he? So it would actually make sense.

Anyway, worst dub i've ever heard? That's easy, it would have to be Angelic Layer. Know why? The actors and actresses make it so obvious that they're reading from a script. And it doesn't sound like they're even trying to pronounce the names right at all. How come CLAMP's animes are usually the ones that are butchered. There goes another one of my favorites down the drain.

Another one would have to be the latest dubbed episodes of Inuyasha. I'm not a big fan of Moneca Stori (Kagome's voice actress).

One dub I truly don't mind is Noir

If you think about it, Kirika sent Mireille an email in the first episode, and it was in English, so wouldn't that mean that all the dialogue between Kirika and Mireille would be in English (since Kirika doesn't speak French, and Mireille doesn't speak Japanese) Also, I think that everyone else's French accents are very appropriate. (Maybe they did it in the original too, but I don't know what Japanese with a French accent sounds like)

Anyway, I am far from an elite anime expert to actually comment on the "worstly dubbed" anime. I only have seen about seven or eight series in their entirety (not counting DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon stuff, since they are almost instant shoe ins to this type of topic), mostly in Japanese, however just over half were in English as well. I know Hellsing would have to be one of the best dubbed.

I'll throw one to Final Fantasy: Unlimited, simply because Ai's voice was pretty bad, and it was really obvious how much they were reading of a script...

...my two cents

Devils heaven, dubbing is basically where a show has its language changed from one to another. As anime's are usually in japanese, some english speaking only people are really pathetic and want to be able to hear the anime in english. So the audio track is 'dubbed' with another language. Simple...ish!
You narrow-minded fool, it's not pathetic. The pathetic part is that most dubs are so lousy, there's nothing pathetic about people preferring something in their own language.

I watched a clip with the dubbing today, and it was ridiculous. Al sounded like he was 5, and mentally retarded. The dubbing people are ruining what is in my opinion the best anime to ever be created.

Although, I must admit, Mustang doesn't sound TOO bad compared to the sub, but I think Inuyasha's dub could've been better, they could have AT LEAST left the pronunciation the same! -_- And the first Yu Yu Hakusho Movie was so bad, I almost cried with shame that I had accepted that anime. But, the rest of the dub of YYH sn't too bad, though Cartoon Network butchered it up horribly, they removed all the blood and you sit there and think how they don't bleed...the Poltergeist Report dub wasn't too bad, though the sub is WAAAAY better, as with most, especially the Inuyasha movies. I tend to like dubs, but only the ones that kepp the anime basically the same, the Sailor Moon dub was pretty good. It was the first that turned me to anime :shifty: Though, you never heard I started with Sailor Moon. :shifty:

Blue Gender (I couldn't watch it because of Marlene ^^')
InuYasha (while I agree that it's a pretty good anime, the english dub SUCKS ASS! esp Kagome...Kagome! Inuyasha! Kagome! Inuyasha! etc. etc. I hate that commercial)
Yu-Gi-Oh (this is pretty good too if you don't sub it ^^)

Kenshin. Definitely Kenshin. I like the guy they chose to do Kenshin's voice in the English version-I think it fits the part perfectly, but-*shudder* How could they ruin such a good manga?!?!?!?! Even the Japanese version-the animators did a really bad job with Watsuki-san's artistic skills! He's really good and the anime just looks...weird.... Nah, I don't like it other than the people they chose for voices. Blecchh.
BEST dubbed, on the other hand, would have to be Fruits Basket. B)

The disturbing part of course has to be the fact that all the others sound American

Love Hina's was pretty horrible. I hate almost all dubs ever made, though. I can't even tell now today whether a dub is good or not. I'll hear a voice that's not Japanese and cringe at it, because it just sounds so WRONG to me.

i am always scared to post in these boards, but i actually like alot of dubs. They're all i have access to, and i guess i can be pretty naive and ignorant. plus i don't have the subs to compare to so......

first, i LOVE the fma dub! or at least, i don't have a prob with it. i think its pretty good. and Al doesn't sound mentally slow.

WORST- anything put on TV before 11 pm. thats all the kiddy shows. like Cardcaptors (nooo!! not my CCS!!), one piece (not a fan, but i know they messed that up), Mew Mew Power (OMG OMG OMG, tokyo mew mew. masaya sounds 40 years old!!), zatch bell (thats just a bad anime), sonic X, and prob a few more

i think that ADV does a good job with their voice casting. am generally please by them

hellsing for sure. between the really heavy british accents, rock music constantly playing, and the very fact that it was dubbed and you could totally tell, i was on the floor laughing!

Actually Hellsing is considered to be one of the better dubs out there.

Hm, it really is. The only one that I ever even thought was a decent dub was Fushigi Yugi, but I hated a quarter of their voices anyway.

One Peice

From the way americans made it, it doesnt count as an anime to my standards. its crap. the voices are creepy too. it goes even when the mouth is still shut and doesnt when it is.

Ergh, I watched an episode of One Piece in dub......... and I was like "OMG what do they think they're DOING?" Cabbit-chan loves the fansubs, but I don't really want to watch if after seeing the tyrany of the DUB.... it's the same people who have massacred Tokyo Mew Mew. =[

I can't stand American accents in anything that's supposed to play in Britain. Hellsing plays in England for the most time (one small part in Ireland I believe) so the British accent makes sense. If they all had an American accent it would automatically have been the most retarded dub ever.'

Alucard with his American accent sounded stupid and why on Earth did they give Anderson a Scottish accent?

Because he's scottish? I thought he was from Scotland. He has the accent in the manga too, very annoying to read.

One Piece set dubbing back another 10 years. I'm not one to care to much about dubs or subs, as long as it sounds decent, but I was acually OFFENDED by the One Piece dub, and I haven't even heard the original japanese. Easily the worst dub ever.

One Piece has officially been murdered by 4 Kids......... I hope that company burns in hell, along with Mew Mew Power (Yup, that's the horror they turned TMM into~!!! :nosebleed:)
