Hey guys, should I get a mod chip for my PS2? I know someone who can do it for me and supply me with the games.

Post reasons why or why not I should get one. They are pretty expensive too.

The mod chip itself is around $150 and the games he supplying for me is $5 each :D

if all it's gonna let you do is play burned games and nothin else, i wouldn't get it. actually, i'd keep that 150 and put it towards PS3 cause it'll be out 2005 instead of buyin the mod that will be in a system that you'll get rid of to get ps3 anyways.

basically, if you want ps3, don't get it and keep that 150$

if not, think over how many games you'll get burned and if it's worth it in the end.

aren't mod chips illegal?

legality? what's that?

anyways, i say you're getting ripped off. a mod chip shouldn't cost over 60 dollars, and you can burn your own games.

No, they aren't. You don't violate any DMCA or other copyright acts by purchasing or installing a modchip. Once the hardware is yours you can do whatever you want with it, short of reverse-engineering. Of course your warrantee will be voided, so if you screw it up you are out $150+chip.

$150 seems ridiculously expensive. I bought my xbox chip for $20, installed it myself, and now I have a a cheap and very effective mediabox. I can't imagine ps2 chips are so much more than that...

To burn ps2 games, you need to download them and have a dvd burner to burn them out which I dont have. So if I want to make my own games it will cost like $100+ for a dvd burner.

The mod chip for $150+ is a good deal plus they install it for you and I get games for $5 each which saves a lot of money too.

You don't need to download the PS2 game on the net. It's possible for what I've seen that you just transfer the game cd you rent onto a blank.

I heard you need a game shark in order for the mod chip to function... could that be true?

no you dont need a gameshark in order for a modchip to work. $150 Canadian dollars for the mod chip and $5 for each game. Say I get 10 games for $50. 1 new game in stores is like $50. So i would be saving myself $450 on games.

I'm clueless at that stuff, so i reckon i'd rather not screw up any of my game systems? :D

well.. to b honest.. i hav a modchip in my ps2... that coz i play alot of games.. n i dun wanna pay much to buy them.. so overall i hav made a saving...
coz where i am... games r round $90.. n somes games dun even come out here.. so burnt games is the way for me...

but jus to let u kno... wen puttin in a chip.. it can waekin ur laser... depending on wot games u play.. i dunno the whole thing.. but from wot the ppl i got the chip from.. they said that i need to play a certain type of burnt games...
so i guess u can burn things differently.. else the laser wears out even faster...

so bascialy.. the good thing is... u can play games cheaper.. n mayb games that wont com out in stores..
but the bad thing is.. u mite hafta go repair it... :/

so its up to u...
but id say.. dun get one.. unless there r a lot of games u wanna play and that u cant borrow those games or if games aint comin out in stores......

.. i bought my chip + installation all for $30 =_=

doesn't matter whatever modchip you get, once you start using copied DVD it kills the lens much faster, so get the cheapest one =_=, let the lens die and buy PS3
hell if a mod chip is $150, its better to buy one of the new PSTwo/70000 series that support copied DVDs
