We identify ourselves with the body and mind. However, when we say "my body" or "my mind", who is the possessor?

Without a mind, a body doesn't work. However, at least to religious beliefs, without a body the mind can still work. So its the mind.

What does "my" in "my mind" refer to then?

By saying "my mind", one claims possession over the mind. If the body is controlled by the mind, and the mind is possessed by something (my mind), just what is the possessor - who are you really?

ahhh but in religious sense it is neither.........both body and mind can be active but nobody home hence people ina coma or in a state of being like a vegetable as some put it.............it is the soul......without the soul neither can work....they'd exist but nothing able to work

What Sephrioth said. I believe your spirit/soul controls your mind and body. If your spirit isn't there then nothing works. Your mind nor you body.

Soul and spirit denote different things. The soul refers to the mind, intellect, or psyche. Spirit is separate from the psyche and body.. perhaps we are talking about the spirit then. ^.^

the higher-level thinking, aka consciousness, that arises from the grey matter in your skull, + the experience & memories that shape it ? But it's no use wondering; it's one of those qns where there will never be an answer that can satisfy everyone. :P

The worst point about being sentient (sp?) is that we think and delve into what we cannot fathom.

The minds itself is a matrix of ideas and perceptions, the only way in theroy to totaly remove a person is if every single perception of a person fades, what they are, what they did, what they looked like, voice, eyes, feelings the lot(thought digital data is another matter altogether).

As for the soul...some one once said to me quite a while ago:
"The body is only a spacesuit"

If we are just extremly complex programs then can some one tell me what the serial code of the operating system is, I think its a beta test.

you can't really know what you are or who you are. The brain just consists of nerves which are highly specialised. Because the brain is built up by nerves, we could just be programmed to think in a certain way. And besides, what is thinking?
