Hehe, Alphonse remarked that he'd never heard any of my compos so I thought I might as well chuck 'em up here for posterity - I think I posted two a very long time ago but I may as well make a thread for the other ones I've done too :) 'Scuse the quadruple posting but the last time I linked to Geocities it denied access so I have to rely on file upload :) Criticism is welcome on any piece, though can't guarantee I'll get the time to implement any suggested improvements ;)
First piece (Anlach): My first composition - done for GCSE Music in the ground bass style. Ground bass styles have a looping ground bass that runs throughout the piece with other melody lines being added in or removed across the top. Adding the clarinet was definitely a mistake and someone else commented that the second violin part was far too high and harsh on the ears. I would like to fiddle around and improve this when I have more time - when I posted this originally people suggested that I put more solos in there so I'd like to try that.

Second piece (No title, hehe XD): This was the piece I composed to go with the Ground Bass tutorial in the Composition Tutorials thread - it was designed to be looped ('cause I felt like it ;)) and I feel this is a much better piece than my first because it's much less of a soundmire and the instrumentation goes together better. I've also gotten better with the use of dynamics as well as toning down some parts to allow others to come to the fore.

Third piece (The Match Girl): My latest - it's my first attempt to write for Soprano-Alto-Tenor-Bass with a musical accompaniment of oboe, bassoon and clarinet. This is quite different from my other pieces in that it has a verse and chorus structure rather than my preferred style of orchestral composition. I'm very happy with the way it sounds, though the voices do get lost in the Midi a bit X_X Alphonse kindly recorded the alto for me on Mp3 and the hideous soprano screeching is mine - my first attempt at audio mixing, hehe XD
MP3's lost, I'll have to get it sent to me ;)
Lyrics:
She's dressed in rags and worn out shoes
The path she walks she cannot choose
You may have seen her walk the streets
Crying out to those that she meets
Matches, matches, penny a box
And though on many doors she knocks
Disdain is all she ever sees
She's paid in bad apologies
Six boxes buys her mouldy bread
A futile way of staying fed
For often she sells only five
It's luck by which she stays alive
Matches, matches, penny a box
And though on many doors she knocks
Disdain is all she ever sees
She's paid in bad apologies
Her fingers blue-tainted and numb with cold
Cast out on the streets at just ten years old
She struggles on through the wild-flying snow
Her face drawn and thin and her pace is slow
She grows so old before her time
Even though she has done no crime
Matches, matches, penny a box
And though on many doors she knocks
Disdain is all she ever sees
She's paid in bad apologies
The town is full of Christmas cheer
But there's no joy left for her here
It's all too much for her to bear
Nobody has a coin to spare
Matches, matches, penny a box
And though on many doors she knocks
Disdain is all she ever sees
She's paid in bad apologies
And still she trudges down the road
Bent double with her heavy load
She starves again though hard she tried
So she fell and froze and then died.
Matches, matches, penny a box
And though on many doors she knocks
Disdain is all she ever sees
She's paid in bad apologies
She's paid in bad apologies
(I think there's a chorus missing on the midi )

I probably wasn't around much when you originally posted it =P but surprisingly, I remember the name of your piece, but not the actual piece itself!
I am not familiar with ground bass pieces, but yours is nice =) I do agree that perhaps some more solos would be nice. Well, not exactly a true solo in the sense that all the other instruments stop playing, but in the sense that their parts simplify/soften so a soloist can shine forth easier.
I actually like the clarinet and violins . . but near the middle when the harpisichord/clavichord (?) and the drums come in, they were a bit too much for me =P because they didn't sound like they belonged to the piece.

I believe I told you how impressed I was that you were able to create that tutorial =) . . I mean, to see composition being taught, and then brought to life through sound! I liked this one because it was gentler-sounding . . great choice of instruments. You could distinguish the parts much clearer than the other piece. Your ending was strange though =P it wasn't abrupt . . but it just . . ended, haha . .
*waits to hear more of your songs* ^^

Current project: A song dedicated to the tsunami victims. It's proving hard to write lyrics for this - I'm using the original Ichigos thread about the disaster for inspiration but it is hard to convey the enormity of such a tragedy with plain words. I'm aiming for a very simplistic composition as I want the lyrics to really hit home... hence the lyrics have gotta be good >.< I've never written a piece in a minor key before so this should be interesting...
Oh, and ignore the upload at the bottom - it's for another thread and I can't find anywhere else to upload it -_- (I bet loads of people will click on it now XD)

^_^ "The Match Girl" is brilliant, although the chorus is a little hard to follow.

OMG, I'm resurrecting this thread from the pits of death! :O Seein' as my last compo got lost in the move I'm sticking it up here:
The Laird's Dance
(winner of April CMA)
Written for three bagpipes (not that the third one does much) XD It was a great challenge for me as the bagpipe has a limited range and pitch as well as the drones going on throughout the whole piece - I had to do a lot of research, and it was fun! I'm glad people liked it enough to vote it for the CMA ^_^
Dunno if I'll do any more compos any time soon, I'm mainly focusing on transcriptions atm... we shall see!

Ha! :P This song makes me laugh for some reason. Very cheerful, lighthearted song. I've never really been one for bagpipes, though.

Aye, they don't appeal to all tastes - the midi bagpipe patch sucks badly but I can assure you it sounds much much nicer when played live!

It's a nice song indeed ^^ I generally like cheerful songs such as this one

That song drove me crazy! :kfreaked:
It was good and all, but I'm not into bagpipes, I guess. :heh: My friend says he loved it.
