Okay, well here's my composition thread, everybody. :D And so far.. I only have one to put up. And here it is:

It's called "Spectrums", partly because I couldn't find a decent name for it, and it changes quite a lot. It's not based on anything, it's just a whole mix and match of ideas. So I hope you like it. Comments would be appreciated, although I have been told that it sounds a bit... "dramatic".

The file is an .wav recording of me playing it. Don't mind the bad quality and the many mistakes, okay? I haven't played this in a while, I composed it a few months ago. But hopefully it will give you a better idea of it instead of a normal midi.

[Daily bandwidth of 5MB, so only two people can download per day :heh: Sorry, if somebody can find me a better host, please tell me. The file's 1.8MB big.]

I loved it! only things i didnt like were around 2:20 where it sounded a lil sloppy(but i think it was supposed too) and i didnt like the part after it wich was like circus music to me. But the basic melody was BEATIFUL it was so soothing and serene. This was great and its neat that you can compose things like this. Maybe in the future you should be a composer :D

Eheh... thanks guys. :heh:
It probably sounded a bit "sloppy" because I didn't play it right. X_X If I have time, I might re-record it.

Me? A composer? Hell, yeah! :D

some of it sounded familiar...is it a real piece or was it inspired by another song?

"Was it a real piece?" X_X Of course it was!! It's al completely original, although I must admit that the bass line for some of it reminded me of Princess Mononoke... But it's all my work!

spoon, you can upload it here if you want, I have plenty of bandwidth ^^

alternatively you can use something like cdex to convert it to an mp3 and it will be much smaller...

or do both! XD

Wow! I love the way you've drawn out the note durations - it's a fantastic effect! I majorly envy those talented people who can play stuff into the computer from the piano/keyboard - my God, talk about going beserk :o I could never EVER play that fast without tripping over my own fingers - it sounds so totally cool! Great use of dynamics and pedals - it's a very well structured piece and I love the way you've used the full range of the piano. The combination of the higher and lower octaves is very cleverly executed because you're not *quite* sure whether you heard those notes or not ;) Good variation throughout the piece and a damn nimble set of hands in action! I like the higher register ostinato at about 3.47, sounds nice. Overall, a sumptuous piece and a 10/10!

Yay, I heard it! Phew, the site must have reset itself, or did you find another host?

Either way, I have to say that it was worth the wait! That was amazing puppets! If you can make stuff like that, you really have nothing to worry about with your choice of career.

I was really nice to listen to, and I'm still kind of finding it hard to believe that you're the one playing it! I mean, it sounds so professional! Oh gosh, wow! And I don't know what you mean by there being any slip ups, it all sounds great to me.

I'm not just being polite either, that really was something.

*goes to play it back for the 4th time*

Way to go!

I liked it except for the rythm. It kinda seemed out of place, maybe you should keep the rythm in place and in steady motion instead of phrasing it too often. *ARRGRGH GOT THAT FROM ME PIANO TEACHER*

great job spoon! your first composition! *pats you on the back* :D
i like the beginning, very flowing, awesome start. i really like the part at 00:52. lts very nice. at around 1:20 is where it gets really messy though... play the trills and runs more clear and concisely. It sounds too mushed together and that will end up with a mishmash sound. also, the song has what i call a "holy" sound to it. everything sound in a perfect (like perfect 5th as in not a major nor a minor) though i do hear some nice minor chords in your musical piece. also, play maybe a metronome when you play cause your tempo is going all over the place... i don't know if that was on purpose, but it's nice to have a concise tempo. Remember, playing fast is cool and very impressive to do (since i can't do it that fast!) but, at the same time, must be played clearly. try making the song a little more depth, more melodic. The the feel is there, but also go for passion (i know, i'm very picky). None the less, a very well done! You took the risk to present it! and I say it was well worth it. I hope to hear more of your pieces in the future! Don't give up hope, write write write! B)

Erm... it wasn't actually my first, most of my compositions are on the main site, one of them having been written 3 years ago. (I'm Sarah)
The tempo was supposed to be all over the place, by the way. It's a technique called "rubato". :sweatdrop: The lack of time signature was intentional (which is making it a nightmare to write a score for). It was to make it sound a bit more... modern, let's say.

But thanks for the comments everybody. Hopefully I'll have time to write some more. ^_^

The song is pretty good. I had found quite some enjoyment of it. However, there are just some parts to me that sound....just a bit wrong. Close to the half way point was one of them. Syncopation is a good thing, but it didn't sound right in some of the places you used it. Then for the part where your tempo became much more agressive, that started out kind of....weird, but then it got really good, and I liked it.

I feel you could've developed a better melody. You made great use of chords and harmonizing (how suprising) and the left hand can be very neat to hear with the right hand at times. Good job, keep it up! 8/10

Spoonpuppet
August 29th, 2004, 09:04 pm
Heh, the main thing that people have commented about is the irregularity of some bits, like the tempo, rhythm and phrasing. That was the point ~ Maybe some people just are more used to regular rhythms and such.

Anyway, I have two works in the making ~ Need to get them done soon, so I can send them off for my application to muic college.. X_X

Need to work out how to do that, heh. Also, this is probably my favourite composition out of the ones that I have done, because I managed to do something different, and that was what I was aiming for. So.. I would really appreciate it if people don't perform it or anything, and especially not steal it, because it means a lot to me. Not saying that any of you guys would nick it or anything, but just in case.. Hope you understand. (_ _)

i'm sorry to put this comment on spoonpuppets thread, but i have to ask.

kurumiangel, i've noticed in almost, if not all, the composition threads that you've been asking everyone for their composition music sheet, and that makes me wonder. have you ever even tried to write your own music? try doing so. so far, all the songs i've seen have no music sheets with them, because they are here for comment, not to share music sheets. i may be wrong, but that's what i've been able to analyze.

Kurumi, if you really want to play peoples songs that bad, I would reccomend you write the sheet music yourself. For example, try listening to the mp3, then playing it, then listening to the mp3, then playing it; etc. Of course, if the composer doesn't want you to distribute their song in sheet music, then you should not do that.

Or you could convert the mp3 to an midi, then get the sheet music off the midi, and get an idea of how to play it. Just be respectful of peoples privacy in regards to their own compositions.

KurumiAngel49
September 21st, 2004, 11:12 am

Madmazda86
September 21st, 2004, 11:17 am
In addition to that, people put their compositions up here on a trust basis - they're there to be evaluated and listened to. Sure play them if you like them that much, but if the composer has told you already (nicely) that they would not like to distribute their score, it's courtesy to respect that wish instead of trying to rip the score yourself from the mp3. Threatening that you will die if you don't have the sheets isn't a particularly nice thing to do. Learn to respect the unspoken copyright that is upon the compositions that people post here. It may not be legally enforceable, but the idea is that it shouldn't HAVE to be enforced because the people on here are honest and wouldn't even consider the thought of plagiarising another person's music. I hope you feel you can include yourself among those in that description. If so, all well and good :)

September 22nd, 2004, 06:33 pm
Wait, hold on here, spoon, he can't even make an midi of it? I'm trying to say, what's it going to hurt if he transcribes the music for himself, and gives to to noone else, doesn't perform it in a crowd, only plays just for the heck of it. Pardon me if I appear rude, but I think that's a little bit unfair for your to say.

After all, you've arranged and transcribed well over 200 songs from games and more particularly anime, didn't even ask all those composers whether or not they cared, then distributed it to hundreds and hundreds of people online, doing a lot more than making an MIDI of it.

And yet here Kurumi really appreciates your work, likes it alot, and wants to be able to play it because he/she likes your music so much, and yet you get irratated that he simply tries to make an MIDI to help him/her be able to play it? I'm sure Kurumi knows fully well not to share it with others, would never do such a thing, and wishes to do this simply because he admires your song. I fail to see anything wrong with that.

I understand you don't want sheet music for that song flying around the internet because its special to you, I know that you want to at all costs avoid it from being copied, and I know that the song is special to you. However, I don't think you should have any problem whatsoever with it as long as he doesn't perform it publicly, distribute the sheet music to others, or take the name of the song for himself/herself.

I think that the way Kurumi asked might have not been the best way, but I still feel its wrong to deny a person such a simple thing that can not hurt you or your composition. After all, you had enough trust to put it on the forums originally and share with tons of people (it was even in a .wav I think), so what will it hurt.

Please don't think less of me for what I've said, after all, we both are shooting for what we think is the right thing. If you disagree with me that much, or think me wrong, then please clarify over pm, or continue in this thread. I don't want to start a flame war, and angelic, I'm not trying to put down sarah (nor have I at all in this thread, or ever for that matter), so please don't put down me, as I know sarah means a lot to you.

If you wish for me to stop my arguement in this thread, then I will do so in pm(or not at all). I feel it pertains to this thread, though, as it is about sarah's compositions. I'm not trying to take sides, just standing up for what I think is the right thing.

September 22nd, 2004, 09:10 pm
Please let me clarify myself, so you may understand why I included Angelic. As I had pointed out in my post, Angelic likes you a lot, and you like Angelic a lot. I was afraid that Angelic might think I was speaking ill of you, which I wasn't and had no intention of, and would be upset with me and perhaps would interpret it the wrong way. I didn't want Angelic to be highly aggrivated with me (not that he isn't already, but more aggrivated I meant), and thought going by the theory that insulting you is insulting Angelic, I feared Angelic would be displeased of that.

And so I mentioned to Angelic that I wasn't putting you down, and asked him not to be upset with me, or take it the wrong way. If anything, this was done out of respect for Angelic in an attempt to clarify something to him before he became more upset with me. I fail to see any wrong I did to Angelic in my post, and I'm a little bit annoyed that you would think my intentions bad, when I have yet to exhibit any.

My apologies if you think me rude, I try hard to avoid being seen as such. Anyways, back on topic :sweatdrop:

Edit: And sorry, Angelic, if you feel I'm somehow degrading you. I seriously am not trying to or intending to, nor do I believe I am :/

Ha ha, perhaps one of the keys to a good dialectic or debate is to feel that you can speak your mind, without having bad side affects crop up, like resentment. Honestly listen to what others have to say. Getting fired up about what others are saying cheats you out of understanding what that person has to say, and causes tension that everyone can feel. Just try and step back and toss those things aside that tell you "I don't like what so-and-so is saying so I'm going to get angry." That way, you have a clear mind and can really give the attention and respect to the speaker that they deserve.

Erm.. I hope so.. :heh: Going to university/music college to study music, and going to specialise in composition.

I've managed to record my most recent composition. It's not amazing quality, but it's for full orchestra, so hopefully I can get that up soon.. and somehow..

Sarah, is your latest comp. one of the pieces you submitted to the university? What kind of music have you been composing?

Most of all, good luck in your studies!

It can be really hard not to get worked up about possessing things and stuff... anyway, I'm glad everything seems to have worked out.

Going for a music college? That's great, and I wish you all of luck. It's also great to see people deciding to go for what they truly love. I should also consider doing so, but I'm too much of a coward I guess.

Ach, I wouldn't worry too much about college, Noir7 - Music teachers can be a rather temperamental lot (from experience *sighs*) and sometimes it can be better that your compositional style isn't restricted by the teachings of others, as it can be a bit of a cramp on creativity.

Though a good teacher at a music school really can make a huge difference to your compositional style and help you identify areas for improvement! Double-edged sword really ;)

*waves good luck to Spoon* Can't wait to hear your new composition! :D

i came across this thread... and yes i know its a little too late to comment on this but... are you Sarah Pobjoy from the Ichigos? It's little embarrassing but... to tell you the truth... you are one of the reason why I started composing. i mean... IF you are Sarah Pobjoy. I admire your Black Ice!

Finally! I have a new compostion up ~
Over the summer, I went on a residential composition course with this group called SoundInventors, part of the Youth Music and SPNM groups. They had professional musicians there, and you could get them to play whatever you wanted. It was a week long, and COMPLETELY FREE, including accomodation, food there, and they paid for my transport to and from there. So if any of you happen to come across SoundInventors, I really really recommend it, even if you're not that good at composing. It's so fun and worthwhile, and you meet so many great friends along the way. I wish I could go next year, but I'd be too old (it's for 12-18 year olds).

Anyway, lol, I got my CD this morning with my group's compositions on it, so here's mine ~ Our brief was to compose for Oboe, Bassoon, Horn, Viola and Double Bass (weird combination, I know), and it had to be based on a landscape. My chosen landscape was a wide road lined with trees in the autumn, so there are leaves everywhere. It's a bit breezy and cars and pedestrians go by from time to time, kicking up leaves off the ground.
I only had one week to do this, 90% of the time with no piano (which was hard at first!) and 100% by hand. Ouch. It's mainly just ideas really, trying things I've never done before. I didn't have enough time to link them together properly, but hope you like it anyway ~

First of all, this sounds too good to be true (the opportunity to record with professional musicians). I'd give anything to do that.. ~_~;

This song reminds me of old American TV shows, lol. I don't think I get your landscape, with the road and all.. but overall it did give me a cold feeling (this was an autumn piece, wasn't it?) Good job.

Well... it was originally about Autumn... and there are some bits like the trills and stuff which represents leaves going whoosh. But then half way through the week I went off on a tangent, lol.

The idea was... first bit sets the calm warm atmosphere (I hope). The second part is where the breeze sort of kicks in. The third, more playful, part are two children running along kicking up leaves, yay. And the fourth part with the horn is a car chugging away, lol. It's supposed to represent the metal against nature... if you know what I mean. Then it just goes back to the beginning.

Yes, I understand what you mean. It's just that this piece of music portrays another picture to me, than yours =P

That's quite a nice and peaceful piece you created. ~ *listened to it for a while* That must have been fun over the summer. If only I can do that here... Anyway, I give it a 10/10 for its peacefulness and how it all fits in. I just...find it a little odd to hear something like this from you. (I listened to each of your other compositions at least ten-fifteen times each, with the exception of Spectrums, which was only about five.) Great work, and keep going! :D

you are simply AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i could never do that in a thousand years. I have tried but
1. no recording machine
2.my pieces suck
and they're 100% piano, and boring and repetitive. But when i listen to yours, i'm like, is this for real? Amazing. I applaud you loudly.

Even if it was written in one week, this is a very impressive piece. I'm not used to enjoying the purity of the instruments' sounds, but they make this piece possible (midi wouldn't have done it justice). Actually reminded of the theme song to Rupert, in terms of its character and personality.

Very nicely done. I don't have much comments other than what was said - the piece is very well balanced in terms of melody, harmony, counterpoint, and overall structure. You also brought out the thematic nature very well, though I'd liked if the part with the conflict would be longer, just for it sink in a bit more.

I loved the 1st composition (Spectrum)! It has a lot of feeling and emotion. Please compose some more of those styles, just because they were that good. 10/10! Whooooohoooo!!!!!!!

If I'm not mistaken, One_Winged, those are authentic instruments. An actual group of instruments.

I wished I had one of those... *starts having a day dream*
