I've done many RPG's, but I'd have to say FFX was my personal favorite. I througouly enjoyed the storyline, the music, the character developtment, and all that. But if we go by a game other then FF, then I'd choose the Legacy of Kain series. I really enjoy those, as they have a decent handful of rather interesting cinemas, and the series actually makes you think.

Finally, I'd go with Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie series. Fun, fun, fun gameplay, some good cinemas, excellent graphics (for its time), and the music is unbelievably good.

I want to say FFX.. but it's so obvious that some game developers just want to make movies. The storyline and characters in FFX are top notch, but the gameplay heavily suffers.

But isn't that what Final Fantasy is meant for? For its storyline? Of course there's going to be loads of cinema events, having a great storyline is what FF is about. I'll agree that I hated the sphere globe thing, and much prefer leveling up.

However, I wouldn't necessarily say the game-play suffers. There are tons and tons of places to explore, secrets to unlock, aeons to uncover. Its got everything to ask for in a RPG, things like sidequests, interactive characters, music that fits the levels and battles pefectly, there is lots you can do with the game play. The whole point of an RPG is that you play the role of a character, that's why its called a role playing game.

FFX does a terrific job of putting the player in his characters shoes, and having the player become attached. Having the player have similiar emotions to what the character portrayed on the screen had. Even if the game play wasn't top notch, is still had a LOT of things that an RPG should have, and also made the player feel really close to being the character on the screen.

Of course, and that's why I think they want to make films, not games. As the years of FF went on, it became more and more obvious (to me at least). It has a great storyline, and since Square has alot of experience in gameplay, they do manage to make good gameplay in FFX too... but I think the storyline and all cuts the gameplay, and would work much better on film.

My opinion why I don't think it's the best RPG ever made.

The legacy of Kain games are more action games though, and the Banjo games are just platformers  if those are RPG's then Super Mario 64 is one too.

The Legacy of Kain games are definately meant to be an RPG game, and can easily be considered a RPG game, for you play the role of a character, and as traverse arcross the lands you unconver more about Kains or Raziel's past. I wouldn't necessarily say its more of an action game.

I guess Banjo can be considered a bit of a platform game, buts I still think its on the borderline of a RPG as many of the missions and assignements you take on, you do it from a point, a story. Whereas in Super Mario, its more of a run through levels type of thing. But yeah, I guess you could consider Banjo more of a platform then RPG game, but definately not Legacy of Kain.

Zelda
ff viii
ff vi
mystic quest (because it was my first)

non-japanese:
KOTOR, deus ex, diablo

I wish the maker of this thread had defined RPG before he asked the question... Anyways by far my favorite RPG is Golden Sun 1 and 2 (they are not seperable in my opinion and count as a single RPG) ( I think of them as a 2 pack set XD). That game, even though it only had the graphics os the GBA, managed to do everything a good RPG should. Give the player freedom, A good story, Great fight mechanics, and the Dijin were the coolest summons in gaming history. ESP the unlockable ones, that took FOREVER to find. Lots of sidequests... man I can't say enough about this game XD

Well, I'm kinda torn between Legend of Dragoon, FF7, and Chrono Trigger. All classic RPG's, which nowadays are the only good ones. Sorry guys, but X was a total failure in my humble opinion. And THEN they followed it up with the ghastly X-2, whose only saving grace was the whole moving-active-time-turn-based battle system. Square has been HUGELY dissapointing me as of late. All looks and no substance...*sigh*

Fire Emblem. I can replay it endlessly O_o;

Sure, the storyline is clichéd, but the character design and characterization is top notch and the art quality is AMAZING! The battle system is the type you can never get tired of (it's more than just [Attack]>[Magic]>[Fireball]). There are so many characters too...

Star Ocean: the second story hands down! Next is deffinately Star Ocean: till the end of time though. Those two games if you were to combine them however, would have it all! If you haven't played those two, then what are you waiting for? I definately reccomend these two games.

There are way too many:
-FF 4-today
-Chrono Trigger
-Tales Of Symphonia
-Skies Of Arcadia
-Front Mission
-DSA (Das Schwarze Auge, German pen-and-paper RPG)
and if they count:
-All Zeldas

Impossible to tell by not being/sounding biast. There are at least 30 BEST RPGs out there. And none of us are qualified to claim which is BEST OF ALL. We can, however, express our opinions about which are better than others. Zelda is more action adventure than RPG. Character development is lacking. Great story, though.

My opinion:
All tales series(Tales of Phantasia/Eternia/Symphonia/Narikiri Dungeon, etc.) have just been near flawless
Chrono series
Suikoden series
Star ocean series
Breath of fire, except the last one
Fire emblem series
Front mission
Ys: Ark of Napishtim
Lunar series
Lufia series
Final fantasies/tactics
Xenogear series
Kotor 1 and 2.
Phantasy Star Online
(Soul Blazer 3?)Terranigma, definitelly set some standards as did FF3(6)
Diablo series, although cliched, they were among the first GOOD* rpgs to come to PC.
Baldurs Gate series
Neverwinter nights series
RAGNAROK(some call it game crack, because the more you play, the more you want to play it. Assuming you don't suck at it)
Others I either forgot, or did not include due to poor gameplay.

Best MMORPG in my opinion is either Guild Wars, or Risk Your Life or RYL for short. Maybe FF11-online somewhere in the back..

*My definition of good is: Fun, GOOD** music addicting gameplay, involving story, rich in complexity, development, and strategic approach, and makes time pass seamlessly.

**Good music: Has enough emotion to wet your eyes in tears, yet enough complexity and relation to the game context to give you shivers/inspire you to go on.

Yes, it takes 40-50 hours to beat Skies Of Arcadia Legends but I could play 30 hours more if they are as brilliant as the rest.

I gotta admit, I love Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia as well as the rest of you people, but there's one RPG that left a mark in history. ^^ Earthbound (Mother2)!!! :D Ah yes...Before Earthbound, there were many RPGs with knights and such, but Earthbound was the first EVER to jump out of that realm and into the one where 13 year-old boys have psychic powers and beat up bad guys with baseball bats and toys gone awry. ;) Awesome game for the SNES! <3 It's hilarious, with enemies such as the Disgruntled Postman, and...well...it's just awesome. It's also the only game to have random objects as your enemies. XD I always get a warm 'n' fuzzy feeling when I get randomly attacked by a coffee cup or a street sign...y'know? Who wouldn't?!</video games review>

-o.o- I need a hug now...and a SNES. ;-;

Yeah, Earthbound was cool. It was never released here in Germany, so I played it with SNES 9X.
A really great RPG with a weird but superb humor. If you can get behind the graphics, it is really fun.
