View Full Version : Juvenile Anime

I've noticed that alot of animes that I personally consider to be juvenile seem to have a huge fan base. What anime's do you think are just...dumb..?
My list has some rather popular anime's on them. It's not that all the art sucks, but the story or plot is just so childish or repetitive. Oh, and give reasons for why you think they're juvenile..

In no particular order..
Inuasha - Repetitve. Long. Plus I find the comedy to be extremely repetetive and overused. This is a classic case of dragging an anime out WAY to long so that you can make some extra cash. 150+ eps? God...

Dragonball Z/GT - Long, repetitive, emotions don't seem real at all, comedy at bad times, bad animation, bad plot.

Evangelion - the emotions just seem really unrealistic to me. Plus I find the fact that the creators even SAID they put religion into it to "make it look cool" really annoys me.

Rorouni Kenshin - Repetitive, annoying, characters all seem like idiots. I'm sorry, but I hate this anime so much. The whole "I beat up people with my sword somehow without killing them" thing gets on my nerves. I mean, if you slash someone up with a sword (and considering the time period it was placed it), I don't see them living. And people wont pass out with one punch, either.

Trigun - Same sort of attitude as Kenshin. The type of comedy also gets old pretty fast. Though I must admit - this anime is a tad above kenshin on my list, I don't find it quite as stupid as Kenshin.

And so ends by bashing of anime I find to be oh-so-immature.
Please don't flame me..these are just my opinions.

...And this thread is not just for anime you hate. For example, I don't like GunGrave, but I don't find it really stupid or juvenile. This isn't a "I hate this anime" thread.

- - - - - - - - - Don't flame anyone! - - - - - -

Pretty much any overly superficial anime involving 9-year old girls and fan service, like Azumanga Daioh (although admittidly I've only seen 2 episodes) or Kodomo no Omacha. And yeah, DBZ sucks.

...although I thought I Me My, Strawberry Eggs was really quite funny, and it fits into the above category...

Although I do like Trigun, you're right.

I think a big reason why they have such a large fan base is that they're shown on TV and over publicized. And the poeple who tend to get "obsessed" are like my age or younger. Not to say that older people don't watch, get obssesed, and whatnot. But, at an old forum I used to go to over half the people were my age or younger and they were all like Inuyasha this DBZ that, and it really got Fing annoying.

What gets on my nerves is when people watch these shows and go "Oh I know a lost about anime. Blah, blah, blah..." when truth be told they haven't seen any "good" animes. That brings up another reason why I think these are over publicized. Over half don't know about other animes, or don't have the will, the money, or whatever to buy the mangas or the anime. I know because I'm at a bit of a halt....I'm broke. =_=

So, yeah that's my little sphiel.

Trigun degrades with time, but I still personally thought it was a really good series.

But I agree with Sondagger above. It's mainly because they are televised or easily accessible over here and that they go "omg i know anime like teh back of mi hand" and stuff, just because they watch one bloody anime XD

I can probably name metaphors in Trigun that you don't get. It sounds like you watched 4 episodes of this series and never continued - I don't know how you could call the latter half of Trigun "juvenile".

I've only seen maybe 8 or 9 eps here and there. When I think an anime is dumb, yeah, I tend to stop watching.

while i agree with you on a few things, such as dragonball z/gt

i agree that the emotions seem unrealistic but it is also set in an extremly unrealistic enviroment. Dont mean to flame, but the series and movies were actually a great comfort to me over very bad times. I dont think of it as juvenile. But i do beleive alot of the fan base is

Azumanga Daioh
Shush, Azumanga is one of the best anime ever. It's funny and cute, and there's no real fanservice. In fact, one of the teachers is a paedophile and he makes all paedophiles in the world look like morons by the way he acts. It's great, really.

Seriously. There is only one instance of fan service I can think of from the entire series.

Kenshin uses a sakabato (reverse-blade katana) doesn't he? But man some of the characters acting like idiots at times it does annoy me a little. ^^;;

I'm not the type to settle with long series having alot of insignificant events and details (as opposed to Haibane Renmei, Tsukhime etc etc etc.), but I do enjoy the unexpected and twists Kenshin throws at us. ^^; don't mind swordfighting at all either, not a bit XD

Yes, the Dragonball series do suck. It takes like a season for them to finish a fight, I hate the way they smile, and what is up with the green thing!

I'm suprised that so many people mention Trigun, while the beginning may be a bit immature, there are so many more juvenile anime. My main two are:

Elfen Lied: While the story may be semi-dramatic, look at it. It isn't offensive because it's disturbing, it's offensive because it's so immature. Put a bunch of girls in the main cast, have at least one of the nude in each episode, add over-the-top violence and you're sure to get viewers, right?

Ultimate Girls: I haven't actually seen this show I have seen images, and it doesn't look too intellectual.

not really criticizing, since i like the manga. the anime just presents itself as juvenile.

hayame: exactly my thoughts on elfen lied. OP good, guro good, idea good, rest is crap, from art to plot to character design.

Sounds a bit like Eva, really. Put a bunch of underage girls in the cast, lift them in body-tight suits and now and then show them nude ~ Add some happy coloured Mechs that aren't so happy when they go berserk, add some random violence against poorly designed angels and look at the fun we're having. On top of that Eva comes with a nice religion flavoured sauce, making it a cool blend of bullcrap XD

And I am still ashamed of myself that I used to like it =_=;

no fanservice? I seem to remember 9-year-old schoolgirl panty shots everywhere, but I must be thinking of something else then... anyway AD just didn't really interest me.

The insane violence gave it a bit of overhype when it first came out, but after a while the series is just.. blah, not as good as I expected X_X the last episode though now that was really something.. brought me to tears. :heh:

Evangelion: same as PFT_Shadow.. it might not be perfect, and the emotions might not be that realistic.. but I liked it when I saw. ^^; Being relaxing to me heh, like PFT again it (and especially EoE) brought me through some bad times.
There were downsides like you all know, but the good that EVA had to offer did bring it out, if people don't let the bad get to them.

/me wonders what Azumanga Gand's been watching :heh:

Unless you were referring to the "bloomers" the girls wear for P.E...

Golden Gash Bell - so far I've just found it really odd and random. It's aimed at kids yet there's so much swearing and stuff in it (might just be the fansub) - just find it really immature, like their commercial break has Gash riding on this weird little cow thing and it says "Where is Gashuu???" -_- The art I find really juvenile as well.

Wow I must have a opposite outlook on those then you Sashiro because i love those animes( EXCLUDING DBZ).... either that or my humor and tastes are dull =P
