In a press conference in Tokyo recently, Nintendo head Satoru Iwata confirmed that the next console will be titled 'Revolution', and, like the DS handheld device, promises to innovate in the field of entertainment. The 'new ideas' hinted at are not mentioned - Iwata fearing other manufacturers may steal their plans, however he did also reveal that the Revolution console will be far more than upgraded GameCube.

"What we need is not a next-generation machine but a next-generation way of playing games," Iwata commented. Iwata's words come just a day after European Nintendo head Dave Gosen slammed Microsoft for driving the industry towards new hardware too early, stating that the industry's cyclical nature is damaging and inflexible. The headline grabbing violence of GTA, the media's fascination with future hardware and ridiculously cheap game bundles also came under fire.
I'm not sure the following pics are real concept designs by Nintendo (chances are they're fake, including the logo). Looks like a fan mockup to me. =P

yeah, i agree. the design is very similar to the gamecube's and if nintendo are going to revolutionise gaming then there would be something more innovative than a cylinder. It probably won't have controller sockets at all unless its needed for voice communication or controls have touch systems as well.

The President of Nintendo Satoru Iwata (spelling?) promised to disclose some information about Revolution on the upcoming GDC 2005 in San Francisco; there, also information concerning XBox Next will be announced. However, the consoles themselves will not appear until E3 2005 in may

I don't think that the next generation of gaming will still have controllers...

it should be called the game circle

Of course, why shouldn't it have a stupid name like that. After all, Nintendo has always kept such amazing continuity in naming its systems before so they should definitely start off next generation with a half-baked system name that automatically associates it with a bad image.

Well, it could be because those are completely fake mock-ups that Nintendo had nothing to do with making.

Bill Gates himself said many times that Microsoft is not going to enter the portable market - the most they're doing so far is helping Gizmondo so that it can provide some competition to DS and PSP

Yeah... those pics are probably fan mock ups. I've rumors that the controller will use touch screen technology, but it is just a rumor. Although I am pretty sure of this: the Revolution will be backwards compatible with GCN games. (Revealed at GDC 2005, an article somewhere on IGN). Still, there's only a month left til E3 2005, so I guess we'll find out more later.

Nintendo's next-gen console will also be around an inch tall; will support GameCube and DVD discs.

Speaking to GameSpot several weeks ago about the imminent launch of the Xbox 360, Robbie Bach, Microsoft's chief Xbox officer and senior vice president, weighed in on the next-console race. He said he largely saw the next several years as a two-party conflict between Microsoft and Sony.

"Nintendo is good and cute...and there's nothing wrong with that," he said. "They'll be a competitor, but in a different category almost. I don't think they have the same ambition that either Sony or Microsoft does in the more mainstream interactive entertainment space."

Bach's words were presumably based on Nintendo's long-standing policy that game consoles should be for games, period. This philosophy was at the core of the company's current-generation console, the GameCube, which uses a proprietary three-inch disc format, versus the DVDs used by the PlayStation 2 and the current and next-gen Xboxes.

However, it appears that will soon change. In a statement on its official Web site, the company "stated loud and clear that [it is] not to be overlooked in the next-generation home console race." Nintendo announced that its new console, code-named the "Revolution," will play DVDs and be backward compatible. "Nintendo's legions of loyal fans will be happy to learn that Revolution will be backward compatible, playing both Nintendo GameCube three-inch discs, along with its own standard, double-layered DVD discs in the same self-loading media drive," said the company.

Speaking of DVDs, Nintendo also mentioned that the Revolution "will be about the thickness of three standard DVD cases and only slightly longer." This would make it the Japanese game giant's smallest console to date, as well as making it barely larger than Sony's new slimline PS2, which is about two times as thick and about an inch-and-a-half longer than a DVD case. Like the PS2 and the Xbox 360, the new Revolution will be able to lie on its side or stand on one end for horizontal or vertical display.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's statement, which appeared strategically timed to deflate some of the hype surrounding the Xbox 360's unveiling, had few other specific details. It reconfirmed details revealed in Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's 2005 Game Developers Conference keynote address. Namely, it reconfirmed that the Revolution will be "wireless Internet ready out of the box" and will be powered by an IBM CPU and an ATI GPU.

That said, the statement concluded with a tantalizing tease for Nintendo fans. "There's much more to Revolution that will be revealed over the coming months," it read, "but the combination of its compact size, wireless Internet, backward compatibility, quick start-up time, and quiet, low-power operation add up to the start of a great game system."

Nintendo also confirmed what has been long suspected...that the Revolution won't arrive until next year. The last line of the statement read, "Get ready for the Nintendo Revolution in 2006

Talk about Hot!!! to bad its set for 2006... when is PS3 coming out? if both XBox 360 and PS3 come out in 2005, Revolution will start behind them and lose a lot of good customers

I like the backward combatability idea. Doesn't mean I need to upgrade my Resident Evil collection XD

In a conference at E3, I heard them say you'd be able to download nes, snes, and n64 games and play them on the Revolution. I already do this with emulators, but you'll actually be able to play them on the system and it's controller, with is specifically built for this task!

The backward compatibility is vital for a NextGen-console. The name will change eventually, I think (like Dolphin in Gamecube. I liked Dolphin more) and I won't rate the console without seeing any games. I would buy a system only capable of SNES graphics if the games kick ass but no system with near-reality graphics if there are only Racers and Ego-Shooters avaliable.

It seems in this war of new consoles the only clear profit-maker is IBM. IBM has made the PowerPC-based core(s) for the Xbox 360, the Cell processor for Sony in conjunction with Sony and Toshiba, and also the Power-PC G5 based processor(s) for the Nintendo Revolution. Not one, but four! Yes, apparently the Revolution will feature FOUR 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5-class processors, codenamed "Broadway", and a graphics processor by ATI, codenamed "Hollywood", the dual-core RN520, with 16MB of frame buffer DRAM. Technically, this makes the Revolution a bit more powerful (2.5 x 4 > 3.2 x 3, 16 > 10). The Revolution also features 512 MB of memory.

*not confirmed by Nintendo*

THe PSP ain't doin so great; In japan the DS has sold three times as much as the PSP.
Out of the Nintendo's Console's code name's Atlantis was the best! (N64)
The super backwards compatability is a great Idea; Usually I'll buy one game and then beat it soon after. THen there's always that long waiting period where I'm tryin to get some money before I can play another new game. Not with the Revolution though! In that recurring waiting time I can be playin all the sweent SNES classics!!

List of old school games that will appear on Revolution (http://cube.ign.com/articles/622/622722p1.html)

Well... I guess as soon as they see that the service is popular, they'll add more games.

Nintendo should give up in the Game Console race... They are loosing!!!!! Just do what saga is doing... make softwear for the other Consoles They have a few good games like Zelda, RE..ECT. But not enough to make a new SYSTEM!!!!!
