I can easily go a 9th... If i really really REALLY try, I can almost get a tenth... but i have to bring my hand down to the side of the piano or else i'll hit other keys.
a tenth would be to hard for me to play in music though

Same here...I usually have to stretch for a ninth...I guess my hands weren't really meant for piano playing...so I think I'll stick with the flute... :heh:

Wow, this is weird - my left hand can stretch to a 9th but the right hand can only make it to the 8th! Must be all the stretching I have to do for the violin ;)

9 on both hands, but I really have to stretch with my left hand... poor thing, it's so neglected.

9 is comfortable, and 10 is manageable (for both hands)
I guess I have good piano hands, but I wish they were more like a guy's hands (I use a women's glove for fencing)

9th easy ten is sort of hard but if I really strech I can do 11 (I guess I have long fingers) if I push down all the notes in between I can strech (spelling???) 12
8 is really easy and that is good for lots of the songs I play.

Yeah, I play music with a lot of octaves in them, my piano teacher wants to "work my advantage"... <_<
Although I can't really see any kind of advantage lol.

only 9 if i really try... before I thought octaves were hard enough, but practice... it's ok now.. i need to stretch 10ths for violin anyway... so lots of practice at stretching my tiny hands...

right hand: 9th easily, 10th kinda

I can do 10th with little effort, but 11th is impossible :P

July 14th, 2004, 12:57 am
I can reach a 9 comfortably with both hands . . . but for me, stretching isn't as important as agility! Bigger hands means it's easier to trip over them.

Yeah, I looked at Oliver Jones and Oscar Peterson at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, Jones was the fatty hand :heh: , and he was damn fast...but well, Peterson has a lot of arthritis..

July 14th, 2004, 02:34 am
i agree, stretch isn't really important
but how i wish i have longer fingers...just to tell u...there are difference
i once watched those 60th century pianists perform...omg those hands are not only big, their fingers are soooo long...sometimes i have to reach for black notes eh oh well guess some ppl are just born with good piano hands

I wonder how far I could stretch on a HARPSICHORD, with their super-slim keys! :P

yep yep, cuz my piano teacher has midget hands, but OMG can she play. When you get to big chords, just play them scattered but fast. *sigh* so jealous lol

well, i can reach up to a nine... to a ten is really not necessary... cmon, not many songs have a split that far... and chihiro, it's aight if you can't reach to a nine, it's just stretching exercise. if you want to play music like final fantasy however, you may have to stretch a note farther... but not in a ninth so you won't stretch your precious little hands. I have a friend who has small hands but can play so fast, she can manipulate looking like she is playing an octave... so bottom line, just stretch to where it is comfortable. don't overdo it or two things may happen: either your hand will stay stretched forever or you won't be able to play at all... hehe... both options doesn't seem very good at all...

Hehe it looks like I'm not the only one who thinks that I have big hands...like everyone else I can do 9 keys easily (darn octave scales are so annoying) but I might have to strain a little to make 10...
I don't understand how some songs have chords that are 10 keys apart...those are pretty much impossible...for me anyways ^_^;
Neerolyte
September 30th, 2004, 02:57 pm
ya if you play some chopin pieces, he composed lots of 5 notes chords with 10-12 key apart. you play 2 notes on your thumb and just stretch as far as you can hahah
Plod
October 2nd, 2004, 05:12 am
I think I can do 9 notes. And for those who can't make those really big stretches, use your nose XD I think Mozart composed a piece that required you to hit a key with your nose XD

I can stretch to a LH 13th if i really need to- eg in some of the chords in Ravel's "Scarbo" (the most difficult piece in the world!!) i never have to stretch more than a 10th/11th in the RH

hm i wonder how you guys count when you say nine is it those between the thumb and the little finger or is it one counting with the thumb and nine when the little finger is on it?
yeah i know im a little bit after :bleh:
if that is so then i can reach a nine :) but have to pull them down aside or else i will touch the others haha

Hmm... from a C up to an E, that would be *counts* ...7,8,9. Would it be 9? Hearing numbers like 11 and 12 make me wonder about the evolution of humanity. @_@ Oro!
