I can do a 9th but that's about all... I've tried playing Paganini's Caprice 24 in A minor but it has 10ths in it! Impossible for most players! I found out that when his body was exhumed it was found that he had a pinky that he could dislocate in order to reach a 10th and thus write sheet music for solo violin involving 10ths and amaze everyone in doing so! Isn't that amazing? Lol!

'That's all'? Feh. I just started a couple years ago. Feel my pain. I'm still working on 3rd position. -_-

Gnommish you copycat! ha ha just kidding.
Oh wow I have just finished Sabriel. Is there a sequel to it?
And I don't play the violin, although the music teacher got me to try and she said I could do about a 7th. I have no idea what that means, maybe she was high lol.

I played violin in 4th grade and was force to quit. ;_; I can only reach barely 2nd position. Makes me sad.

Yup - it's called Lirael and it's now out in paperback (damn, should've waited 'cause the hardback weighs a ton!). The sequel to Lirael, Abhorsen, is now out in the bookstores too :)
I've been doing violin for a year and a half and I can do third when pushed, but feel a bit more comfortable with first and second! ;)

I'm talking about intervals, not positions... :P
I.E. stretching an octave between to notes means that one note (your pinky) plays exactle an octave above the first note (played by your first finger). Example: Most people can stretch an octave. Try putting your 4th finger (pinky) down on E in first position (that'll make it a B ), then put your first finger (pointer finger) down on A (making it a B, also) at the same time and play them together. They should be an octave apart. That's the kind of "stretching" I'm talking about... :P
As far as positions... I can do up to 7th position so far. I can play a bit higher than that on the fingerboard, but nothing is really very effective up there...

*sighs* Didn't you read my post? :P I'm talking about INTERVALS between two notes being played at the same time. :)

I thought an octave is eight notes. The B to E thing you're talking about should be a fifth, shouldn't it?
You're right though, most people, at the most, could probably play an F or F# while holding the B down. My hands are small, so I can't get past F at the most.
As for positions (someone else's post now), most people I know learn first and third first, then second and fourth (therefore they develope a hate for second position). I can play 1-5 comfortably, and then 6-7 okayish, and 8-10 if I'm really forced to.
I've been playing for seven years though, so...
