I'd say 90% of dubs are horrible, 9% are bearable and 1% are actually good

in fact the only ones I can think of are Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away... I guess when you put Disney's money behind a project you get some people that know what they are doing.

I love subs, but the dubs are easier to watch.
Sometimes though, I just want to hunt the voice actor down and ask them where they took lessons, if at all.

I agree with Gand because very few dubs are good, and some of them are so unbearable that I can't even watch them, I voted subbed because now I just read the subtitles with out even noticing in and the voices always sound much better in the original japanese

Subs.
Dubs sometimes.
Spirited Away and Mononoke were good dubs. Sailormoon was an ok dub. But I would choose sub over dub if I had to choose only one.

What kind of real anime fan would prefer dubs, right?

Well from my rant in "Worst Dubbed" you guys know how I stand on this topic.

Honestly though, I do like both, because both can be good.

EDIT: If I may expand this discussion. If you, or a friend of yours lost their sight, would you comprimise your otaku intregity and listen to the dub?

I picked I LIKE PIE (both) for two reasons:

1) If I'm watching on tv, i really don't have a choice do i? But if I'm watching something i own, then I do. And it depends on my mood. Sometimes I don't feel like reading.

2) Pie is just darned good, y'all.

Hmm . . . well myself I prefer sub, although I want to learn enough Japanese to be able to watch anime without subs at all. ^_^ As for your question, I'd still not listen to the dub. I hate it sounds in English. It just sounds right in Japanese! Even though I'm blind, I don't care, it's got to be subs. I can't see the picture anyways, so even a "description" in English dub can only go so far. In which case I'd just listen to music.

On the topic of subtitles:

I hate when subtitles are yellow. Yellow is a gross colour, especially when it's a really deep yellow. Why do they always make subtitles yellow?

I like my subtitles white (not being racist or anything lol)

most pioneer dubs are the best
they choose the best voice actors most of the time
and really portray their character

Yeah, that was just plain crazy. Stupid neurotic people. <_<
But dubs are easier on the eyes, although I do try to watch subs when I can, because the Japanese voices sound so much better.
And this is a weird topic, but I like my subs... yeah, white. I, for one, hate green. It's disgusting.

If I am watching and anime for the first time and it is dubbed then it doesn't bother me as much, but once I have heard how good it sounds in japanese then watching dubbed is something I regularly don't do. (i was watching a really bad dub one time and it was done so horribly and when it was done originaly in japanese it was soo good, when I watched it in english it made me cry. They ruined it soo much it was horrible)

Both. It just depends on what sounds better to me. Although I usually watch subs, I still think some dubs are better than the japanese sub (cowboy bebop, FLCL, ect.). I say both. It's stupid to say you like one or the other IMO. -_-

I can't force myself to listen to the English dubbed version of any anime for more than five minutes if I've already heard the original. I tried once...I was watching my Slayers Try DVD collection for the millionth time and I switched to the English language version out of curiosity...I could barely hold back the tears as I heard my favorite character's voice...it was high-pitched and nasal-sounding, not at all like the beautiful voice he had in the original! It was terrible! I've tried the same excercise with other anime as well, and I've come to a conclusion: Those horrible americans never fail to choose the worst voice-actors possible for every series!

Don't worry angelic, the license is coming soon. I just know it.

Anyway, I prefer subs, just because the acting is better and not just any person can play a voice. In japan, voice acting for anime is taken much more seriously than it is here.

I must vote for pie. Dubbed anime is all I've ever watched, but I have seen a few clips of subbed anime. English makes people talk too much, and dubbing companies don't exactly have enough mouth animation to show all the meaning. Oh well, subs are still better, but dubs are what people like me are restricted to. :(

sub!!! dubs suck the voice actors they choose are always really crappy. take inu-yasha for example. inu-yasha sounds like a 13 yr old whining at his mommy. the subtitles are much better because then you get a sense of what the characters are actually supposed to portrayed as

To me, it really depends on the series.

Dubbed-wise, I watch Fushigi Yuugi, Inuyasha, and Ranma 1/2 simply because that's what I'm used to. I'll watch the subs if I'm in the mood. I watch Spiral dubbed because I think it's an actual good-quality dub.

Subbed-wise, I usually preview the dub first and then switch to sub. I watched Ayashi no Ceres the entire way through before listening to the subs, and that's mostly what I watch now. But I'll listen to the dub if I'm in the mood. Rurouni Kenshin and DNAngel dubs bug me to death, though. I watched the DNAngel dub for -literally- two full minutes before saying, "this sucks," and switching to subs. Oh, don't get me started, I could ramble on forever.

Overall, I really like subs better, but it really depends on the series. That's why I voted for pie.

In this particular case, dubbed is when they take the anime and do voice-overs for the characters. Simply put, they add different voices in a different language.

Subbed is simply when they translate the anime, and have subtitles/captions telling you what they say.

With the exception of Card Captor Sakura, that dub is a piece of crap.
I watched CCS dubbed in catalan (a dialect of spanish), and it was very well done.
Then I saw the English dub... :bleh:

I preffer subbed, but if a dub is done right (don't change around the story!), I can watch that too.

Subbed always, Dubbed Rarely

REASON: Subbed you get to pick up japanese quite a bit, and you get the original feel to the anime/manga with subbed

i just prefer the authenticity of subbed...
you rarely ever find censored subbing, which is another good thing...
and even in some languages other than english, dubbing sounds bad (for example Spanish dubbed Pokemon sounds kiddy, where as english is slightly better.)
even more violent animes than pokemon sound kiddy in spanish...
and the lines that the writers come up with to substitute the original when subbing are totally different, and suck.

SUBBED!!!!!!!!! Dubbing is alright, and i'll settle for it only because i cant download and only the dubbed ones play on tv... -_- i used to like dubbed... but then one of my friends showed me the subbed version of an anime, and i fell in love with subbed. the only thing i have against subbed is that if you cant read fast, you miss out on the pictures... lol luckily i can read fast :D

Either that or just watch it twice, the pictures one of the times and reading the text the other time. ;)

The only problem with Dubb's is you dont get a literal translation, so you probably wont get the real meaning of stuff. But th problem with Subb's is that the subbers might do a literal translation, so some times they mean:

No, dont go to sleep now!

(but the translators put)

ACH! No sleep now!

Subbed. For sure. Take Azumanga Daioh for an example. English dub..."What's the story, morning glory?!" from one character to another. Japanese..."Good morning musume!!"

I mean...nothing against English...but that was really lame. *laughs* A lot of cultural jokes that some of us could get--((And that wouldn't even be me. I'd still like them around, though...))--are dropped to fit cultural standards, unfortunately. So...meh. Subbed. XD

*prepares for assault* Most of the animes I watch are dubs. But I have good reason! It's not like they show subs on TV, which is where I watch most of my anime, since I don't always have thirty dollars on me. Plus, it's easier on my eyes and ears. I want to watch the anime, not stare at subtitles and look up at the action every now and then. When I get a DVD, I usually watch the dub, then the sub. As for the "cultural reference" issue, I like manga. Mangas are good. They usually leave in the culture stuff, and if they don't, there's sometimes a nice little guide in the back. One more thing to mention: Sometimes the voice actors don't fit right in the subs, and sometimes the dubs. Monkey D. Luffy's dub is HORRIFYING (I've never heard his sub voice, though, so I don't really know), but Yuki Sohma's dub sounded pretty good. Then I watch the sub and I practically screamed, "Why does he sound like a GIRL?!?" Ed Elric's was pretty much the same way. A bishonen can have a girl-like voice, but someone chibi (but hot) like Ed? Don't think so. Everyone's going to yell at me now, I know it. I just haven't watched enough subs, I know, blah blah blah..."Begin the verbal assault!" *bell rings*

EDIT: Oh, right. My answer was subs and dubs, in case you just skimmed my extremely long post and tried to get an answer out of it.

EDIT2: Actually, come to think of it, Ed's should have sounded fitting even if it was girly. At least in the flashback episodes. And even after it, his chibiness still made him look so young, he had to sound girl-ish. That's how little people are. Sorry, FMA fans!

I'm a sub watcher through and through... way back in the old days I was an elitist about it and never watched dubs... but now, there are actually some very good dubs like Wolfs Rain out there.

I'm glad to see many of the companies are taking their casting and acting seriously finally. But yeah, subs first in almost everything. I get my Japanese cultural references left in their entirity... and no matter how you look at it, the Japanese seiyuu go through far more strenuous training. I'm pretty sure they record backwards to American animation... recording their voices to already finished animation... and usually in a group. I mean, that's just amazing imho. It's fun to watch footage of them acting it out. Watching a seiyuu making the motions of a nosebleed is hilarious. >)

HA! Shaman King is annoying? Watch One Peice! I was all hyped it was going to TV, but then it was 4Kids dubbing it and editing all the good parts out. And changing the name...And Luffy sounds like a damn Chipmunk!

I actually liked a large chunk of the dub voices for Shaman King.. as wrong as it is, making Ryu Latino was hilarious. His actor really knew how to sell a joke. Few voices bugged me or felt off. Anna's voice was to the T for one... just the stupid pointless edits done to it were annoying. What's wrong with the name "Chocolove" anyway? >)

Of course, Radical_Dreamer has it right... One Piece is far worse. I love how kids aren't allowed to see any form of tobacco product anymore. X_x

I voted for both.

Reasons - Sub just because the original dialog most likely wasn't altered.
Dubs - To hear the English bastardizations. Really If I have the option I will watch it with the dubs and subtitles on. Interesting to see and hear two different dialog options. If that makes sense.

Hmm, I've only seen Cowboy Bebop dubbed (when it was on TV a couple years back)...haven't really watched it subbed (heard my friend watching part of it). I think I got used to the dubbed version since that's how I saw it the first time. As for Wolf's Rain, hmm, heh heh...only saw bits and pieces, but I know it's supposed to be awesome.

As of right now, I like most everything subbed...

Subbed. You can listen to the original voice of the characters and there's some anime that is dubbed like sh*t (They've translated the names of Detective Conan)
