1) Time of Season - In other words, whichever season it currently is in your hemisphere, so autumn or spring.

2) Alternative - Experimentation with instrumentation or styles that you've not used before, e.g. ethnic music, atonal, instruments that rarely get solos, or just instruments that you've never used etc.

3) Combination – A mixture of 1) and 2)

~

-> there is no limit on the number of instruments used
-> 1 – 6 minutes in length
-> midi or mp3 format only please
-> if it’s in wav, find someone to compress it
-> if you only have the score, find someone to churn out an audible file from a music program
-> if you’ve changed your song before the deadline and wish to re-submit it, simply make a new post with the updated file, but don’t forget to edit out the old link in your original post
-> no plagiarizing, observe the copyright stuff, blah blah blah
-> submit your entry like this . .

Deadline = Friday, April 29th, 2005 @ 9pm GMT-5

~

-> please keep discussion to a minimum, for you will have your chance to comment on the pieces in a later thread
-> can somebody pin this up please? thanks

Yay! This is my first time submitting a composition in a competition! My choice of composing this piece is time of season, and I chose spring. :)

I had to cut some corners to make my entry presentable, but I doubt I'll have any time to work on it anymore with finals coming up. Anyways, I started off with trying to do #1, but kind of got off track, so I changed the lead into an ocarina, which I haven't really ever used before, effectively making it a "#2 piece".

Edit: I had some problems with the recording process, so this version isn't exactly optimized sample-wise. Oh well :(. Also, the midi is also available on my thread, under the filename water.mid, for those interested.

Ok, this one is short. It's for cello, harpsichord and flute. It's called "The Winds of Spring." The harpsichord is a strong, colder wind, the cello is the warmer breeze, and the flute is a bird.

ARRRGH! *opens Noteworthy and works like crazy* Crapcrapcrap, I forgot, I utterly FORGOT!

Edit: Okay, here we go - the drumbeat is highly bizarre 'cause I was experimenting but ach, whatever ;)

Title: The Laird's* Dance
Composer: madmazda86
Link: Attached below, also see next post for mp3 sample.

*Laird = A Scottish Lord

A bit about the composition - it's three bagpipes and a drum in terms of instrumentation, and I'm entering the Alternative category as I've never worked with the instrument before and not many people do! It's hard to notate for using Western styles because the bagpipe has a very limited range (A above middle C to high A) - when playing a bagpipe the notated C is played as C# and the notated F is played as F# - there are no semitones, only whole tones, and a combined drone of A below middle C and low A on bass clef are played constantly throughout the piece. So yeah, you hear the piece as if a piper were playing it, rather than as if it was notated that way.

Enjoy!

And here's the mp3 sample of the first few bars, courtesy of Alphonse's friend :D There's a passage about halfway through that wasn't played right but it still sounds heaps better than the midi!

Title: Rains of Renewal
Composer: James Greterman

Composer's Notes:

This song is reminiscent of an ancient, green valley surrounded by mountains. In the center is a large cluster of trees, and atop a surrounding hill are two children lying in the grass. Winter's just been thrust away by Spring's grand entrance, a cloudburst from above the valley. The children, getting soaked in the springtime drizzle, get up and run to the trees for shelter, playing tag along the way. They find cover under a gnarled tree and lean their backs to its trunk as they watch the rain fall subside and spot a faint rainbow peaking out from between the clouds above.

"Rains of Renewal" is only a working title. (Forgive me, Al! :whistle:)
