I know what glomp means, but I want to know where it comes from. Can it be traced back to a Japanese word or phrase, or is it just a term that white people made up?

I don't know much about glomp, but here's what I found:

Glomp.

Definition: A method of greeting or attack using hugging/tackling.

Word origin: Unknown, but has Japanese manga roots. Found in such mangas as 'Dragon Ball.'

well if it means attack hugging when greating someone than wouldn't kagura (from fruits basket) be considered as glomping kyo (she attacks him and hugs him and tacklles him when she sees him)

yeah, I would think so too, by definition it seems right. Also another example would be in Last Exile I've heard.

Isn't glomp actually internet slang?

It's not on dictionary.com and also not in my dictionary, so I doubt it's an official English word~

yup, its in Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=glomp&f=1):

A glomp is often preadatory and lies somewhere in the grey area between a caring embrace, and a flying leap to tackle someone.
The term is used extesively in anime culture, as well as online in text form (anime because many anime characters do this often, and online because it is short and descriptive).

good ol' internet
I had actually never heard of it before...

glomp can be found in the English Ranma manga, but is that word only in english, or does it come from Japanese language. The only reason I suspect it does is because it's an "otaku" word (don't get me wrong; I'm NOT an otaku)

I've never been glomped, and I've never glomped anyone. I still find glomping highly amusing.

I doubt it came from Japanese. Japanese can't write GL and MP for as far I know.

that's very true

to write it out in katakana would be GURONPU, and that's just not right ^_^

Hahahaha!!! I get glomped by my friends everyday!! It's this weird form of greeting, normally when I see them start running (think Kagura Fruits Basket Style) I duck behind Hexe and start screaming. Most of the time I end up on the ground afterwards. ^_^
My friends are strange.

We are NOT strange Des. Although yes, glomping is fun! Even if I get hid behind and glomped instead.....I guess it's a really odd us thing. Glomping is in Ranma? Hmmmmm haven't come across it. Interesting.
