View Full Version : Composition Of The Month Awards

Hey everyone! It's time for a new "Composition of the Month Award," this time for the month of June. I have been recieving some suggestions that we should do "theme" contests, much like American Idol. Unfortunetly, I have decided to disregard that (for now, at least) because different genres create different challenges, and choosing the most favored of them all makes it interesting. But anyway, since we now have LOTS of new members, many of whom are composers, I hope this month's contest will be much more exciting!

Remember, ONE composition per person. Original work only. Here's the format:

Try to keep conversations out of this topic; I will delete them. Only "submit" posts will be allowed for the sake of keeping things orderly and less confusing.

The deadline is June 23rd! Good luck! :D

1) Can you post mp3 files?
2) Do the composers have to create a new song just for this contest or can you submit a previously composed song?

Also, if needed, I could encode all the composers' midis into MP3s. I think it will be alot more fair. ( Because MIDIs sound different on other computers, and MIDIs stink anyway ><). What do you think Michael? I could then send the mp3s to you to host, and then delete after the contest so that they won't eat up the bandwidth.

I'd glady help, Good to know before I do anything stupid. ^_^

1) Yes
2) Any original work.
3) MIDIs are fine because they're the easiest to download and hear. But I understand where you're coming from, especially when your composition uses many different instruments.

If anyone REALLY WISHES to have an mp3, contact Noir7. But the point is having a great composition, no matter the formatted sound. An awesome compositon will be heard through low-budget technology. :neko:

just a suggestion:
maybe whoever wins the May nominations should be carried over to the next month? i dunno.... moderator has final say.

I see what you're saying, but I don't approve of the idea. It's a lot more fun and interesting to see new songs each time. New rules:

- A composition that has won a CMA can not be entered again.
- A composition that has been submitted before can be submitted again for re-entry as many times as you want, unless it has already won.

After hearing Noir7's music... there's a huge difference in sound when comparing the formats, no questions asked. Therefore, for this month's voting, I would like to say this:

"Listen" to the music: let the melodies, counter emlodies, harmonies, etc. work through your ears and see if it all fits together. Be critical on how the composition flows, how it feels when you close your eyes, etc. In other words, concentrate when deciding.

Do not "hear" the music. Sound recordings should NOT be the deciding factor. Put it this way, if the other midi formats were in mp3, would they sound better, or worse? Likewise, if the mp3 was in midi format, will it be the same?

Hmm okay, everyone could just send their submissions here like Michael said in his first post, and then I can convert them into Mp3s. And thereafter we vote?

Try to submit your stuff ASAP (to Noir7) if you want to convert it. Submission for this contest ends June 23rd.

Here's my submission. I wrote this after a little volleyball game with my friends that I stunk up miserably. It's a Piano/Cello duet.

hey, i was wondering, if you can change my song (distant thoughts) to mp3, just to hear how it sounds in that format.... i don't think i can submit that song since it's still under voting for the may award... if you have time to. thx!

PM Noir7 about it. Just e-mail him the file you want him to convert.

Yeah about that, don't contact me via e-mail. I use MSN, and it's a fast and easy way to send files.

Here's my MSN: c_erhamo@hotmail.com

My submission. May sound like crap, depending on your midi synthesizer.

One of my first compositions, o well.

SaintSavage, could you follow the format just to be specific?

I don't want any wrong information when I put this all together.

If you find that some of your posts were deleted in this topic, it's because I said I would in the first post. Sorry!

Again, try to keep conversations out of this topic and leave it for submissions and questions only. ^_^

And here's my submission:

Title: Evangeline's Theme - Pale Surrender
Composer: Michael R. Yago
Link: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~yagomich/compositi...lesurrender.mid (http://www2.hawaii.edu/~yagomich/compositions/evangelinestheme-palesurrender.mid)

One more thing. :sweatdrop: Because of the new files and stuff, and people wanting to change things around, submissions will be extended to June 28th. Also, if you change your submission, please delete the post with your previous submission. For anymore questions (I hope I answered everything), PM me ASAP.

I listened to all of them, and they all sound fantastic. This is going to be huge! When the voting starts, get everyone to vote!
