Okay, today we were doing the seating test for the flutes (I'm a clarinet by the way...so mines was not today) This is how it worked; all other musicians except whatever instrument; for this matter flutes must sit in the front while flutes sit in the back, we must not look at whose playing nor talk or anything. We vote; 1 2 or 3, 1-perfect in everything 2-something about the way that musician plays isn't quite right but everything is good. 3-tone was nice (or something else was) but everything else was...well....bad. 1=the first row, then we test them once more to see what seats they should sit in 2-second row 3-third row

The first flute player (use to be that is ) has a leak in I think G and something else (we were talking after school) she said that a friend of the now first flute player told everyone that the former flute player was gonna play first or some people looked back and stuff---and you know what? they treated this as a POPULARITY CONTEST or just chose WHATEVER because they couldn't remember how one person sounded.

I was angered by this, I don't blame her at all for having an air leak I blame the musicians who kept on looking back, Now, I'm a bit okay at school but if people look back they will merely remember our terrible first row clarinets next week, I suggest a big huge wall should cover us (but we can hear them. I swear, the choice for the flutes surprised me--popularity contest and people looking at the back and everything was wrong.

I think it would be better if the conductor decided then again I'm not sure just which is better---which do you think is better---conductor choosing or us choosing (NOT LOOKING IN BACK OF US THAT IS!)?

And I'm pretty much scared because I have a feeling my clari has an air leak but my private teacher doesn't think so @_@ please tell your view on this all

The conductor. He/She's the one controling the band, so it should be their decision, not the fellow peers. Only they know the specific needs of the band.

Popularity contest? >.> . . well, at least it won't be your fault when your peers realize they suck due to their voting. In fact, don't let it get to you, but instead use the opportunity to laugh behind their backs and cheer yourself up =)

Oh, and good luck with the clarinet ._.

Hehe thnx for your replies ^^, I'm guessing that my co conductor was actually testing on just what kind of seating test we should do--because the others got out of hand---and my guess is she wants to see just how our minds work in band in addition to that see what we need to improve on by listening to some else--ah...wait that was the reason o_O;

Let your conducter choose.

I really hated sitting in front of the brass section. Firstly i couldn't hear what i was playing, secondly i couldn't hear what anyone else was playing and thirdly i can't hear anymore. :heh: As long as you're in the whatever the group is you shouldn't complain. Music isn't a question of popularity.

Conductor all the way! It's better that way. That way people can't bribe the other band members into giving them a 1. You have to bribe the conductor! Muahahaha! I'm playing flute right now, but I'm switching to french horn so there really isn't a first horn and second horn for us because I'll be the only one! Muahahaha!

Anyways, I agree with Sondagger and the controlling the band thing. Plus...Doing the seating tests that way would take too long.

Yeah the conductor should be the one making the seating decisions. Usually it's the audition that makes the decision. Section leader is another story though it was all determined by seniority.
