Yeah when i play a song i hate reading sheet music because i feel it slows me down way to much so i prefer memorizing the song so i cna play it smoothly but i have more and more trouble on the harder the song of course. So i just want to know what the best way you all memorize a song is. Whether it be playing the song all the way through everytime and keep repeating/ or measure by measure.

My current way right now is to play until i make a mistake and when i do make a mistake i go back to the begining and redo it all its efficient but quite frusturating when your like 7/8 of the way done with the song :unsure:

That's a way of doing it but it's more effective if you do it in chunks. For example the bit which you screw up is the bit you practise until you can sort of memorise it. Then you try and play the whole piece again. It's basically practising but learning it. If you know chords then look at the chord pattern of the piece and it'll help so much in memorising. Helps if you concentrate. Bashing your fingers helps me. I smash my hand against the piano so that the pain reminds my fingers to work properly. But it hurts.

What i do is listen to the key of the song and if there's a repeating lick i get it stuck in my head. It's all a matter of repetitiveness for me.

I know exactly what you mean, xxsuddenlyxx. I do the same thing, but instead of playing at the beginning all the time, play from a part in the middle to where you usually screw up. There really is no secret to memorizing songs, but once you do know them, you would have to play them over and over again without using the sheet music at least once or twice a month to ensure the memorization.

I just play the song over and over and I listen to the lyrics ... it's easy. Expecially if your singing and playing guitar.
