Just today, I have started playing french horn. And lemme tell you, I love it!!! The problem is that it's hard for me b/c I just switched from woodwinds to brass. I play flute...Well, the thing that I'm having trouble is is the ombisher (SP?). I have no idea what to do since I'm a flutist...

Please leave me whatever tips you have for a woodwind gone brass person...Thank you so much!

Oh and it's a double french horn. I don't know if that makes a difference...

Finally, some other people actually play the french horn!!!!

Here's some tips, Chibi Spirit:

-Brass and woodwinds are very different kinds of instuments, so when you're playing the french horn, forget everything you know about woodwinds.

-You should practice blowing into your mouthpeice as often as you can so you'll be able to play higher notes (this is especially hard for french horns)

-Play some scales to get a feel for your range ex. B flat scale: 1st valve, open, 1st valve, 2nd valve, 1st valve, open, 1st and 2nd valves, 1st valve. (the valves are the things you press down on when playing, and you also have to use your lips and play upward one pitch each time, along pressing on the valves)

and by the way, with a double horn, the valve you put your thumb on helps you get the right pitch on high notes
