View Full Version : 3 Pieces from an abandoned RPG

Hi.
I once started to make an RPG with a good friend of mine, but we had to abandon it because of our lack of ideas for a good story  . With this thread, I posted 3 of the compositions I made for the game, maybe you'll like them.
Usually, I write atonal music. When I'm writing tonal stuff, my main influences are Nobuo Uematsu, Koji Kondo, whoever wrote that 'Front Mission 1' music and sometimes Tuomas Holopainen. I think you can hear that in my compositions. If there's a rip-off, I hereby apologize for it, because I don't know every melody or theme in history.

Please write back!!!

P.S: I don't know how to post 3 Attachments in one thread and I've found nothing about it in the FAQ, so please don't flame...

The 2nd one.
I would call it a music for a "Ghost Town". A bit swing stylish and atmospheric. The clarinet part is NOT too low, if you use a double bass clarinet ^_^ .

And the 3rd.
Should be a theme for the title screen. winndich said to me that it sounds too evil to be a title theme, so I called it 'Something Evil'.

my favorite one is the 'battle'. you sure know how to use drums and im currently studying drums by listening to other songs. perhaps i should study drums from your pieces. 8.5/10 for the 'battle'. great job.

Do you use noteworthy composer?

HEY!!! I like it a LOT!!! Like 9/10! Your battle theme is not like any of Nobuo's... That's why I like it so much... the FF ones always start with bass 8th notes...
Ghost Town... Definitely reminiscent of FF6 (or FF3 in America) Mistery train... or the swingish type thing in Zozo...
Hm... I don't really think you're off on the Something Evil... As well, it is reminiscent of FF6... Since that is the only one that I can think of that has an Evil beginning type thing... but you would've had to have had some good animations or plotlines in the less exciting parts... Which is most of the song, actually... It sounds like something terrible is happening... Like Kefka going crazy and blowing up all the Espers, or Kuja getting in the Invincible to destroy Alexandria... Or Ultemicia... Or Seymour... I suppose I could go on... But it sounds like a more evil beginning than most... I like it.

These are quite nice for an RPG... Maybe you can ask people here for ideas in the abansoned RPG! I'd help! I've already helped one friend of mine with an arcade machine RPG he's making, himself; so maybe everybody here can help you!

Thanks for the opinions to everyone!!!!
@yellowmonkey121: I play the drums. So I think it's natural for me to use drums often...I have to get away from them...
@badgerglue: What exactly is noteworthy composer?
@TrumpetPLaya42: Yeah, Zozo and the Mystery Train are two of my favourite pieces of FF6. They bring the atmosphere of these levels perfectly. Zozo is one of the best shuffle pieces ever.
@Zucriy Amsuna: I'll consider that offer together with winndich. Prepare to be PMed!

Again, thank you all very much!

Those are great! Especially "Ghost town".

I like your pieces very much too, but I consider, you already know...

And I take your offer too Zucriy Amsuna. Maybe that's a way to escape the complete nonsense and we can get a real story. At the time it's just absurd with some hints of a story....

:nosebleed: Whoa!!! Battle, a simple battle? The music really gets me pumped up, ready to fight anything!! Hehe!!! Sounds really AWESOME dude!!! Nice work, if only you were the one who worked on FF...

Ghost Town...sounds fantastic!! Has that sort of "thin" to it...heh sorry I can't explain it, it's hard for me to explain stuff well...so yeah...

Something Evil...gives that crazy person sound to it...the hair on my back is literally standing up...tommorows Friday the 13th too...ugh...(nice work!!)

I would give you bunches of points!! :D What's the storyline anyways...?

Battle

Wow! The percussion in this song is simply energizing. :) Nice use of strings. You sure do know how to capture the element of RPG battle music well. I like how the beginning is almost canonic. Nice job there. I've tried to compose battle music before, but it never turned out anywhere near this level of quality. The length is also a plus, as it doesn't quite get dull thanks to the interweaving melody instruments and driving string sections. However, I was wondering: why did you not fade out at the end?

Ghost Town

Very ghosty. The flute adds a certain sense of mystery to the piece, and the light percussion in the background really reinforces that mystery. Classy bass line. I find it very hard to make such an interesting bass line. Lastly, the breaks in the melody are a nice touch, as they add a sort of anticipation and abruptness to the piece while overshadowing the low drone instrument(s). I'd definitely play an RPG with this kind of music. :)

Something Evil

For some reason, I found this song to have a very strong influence over it by Uematsu. Quite FF-worthy. Your use of woodwinds intermingling with one another and interesting rhythms in this piece really pulled me in quickly. The name of this song is good, too. I particularly liked the part about 1/3 of the way through with the strings and woodwinds exchanging countermelodies. However, I felt that the piece would have benefitted from more pronounced cadences from major VII chords to the tonic once again. It seems like you use a lot of accidentals to emphasize the "evil" you are trying to get this song to embody, but it seemed that it wasn't quite in actual harmonic minor, which could've been a great addition. Of course, that is just an observation and not meant to deface the piece. It is a wonderful composition, and I hope you continue your attempts at RPG composing. ^.^

You're quite the unique composer here on the board, and each of these three songs is easily distinguishable from the others. Well done. Keep it up! ;)

@ Sumutsi-Kigawa:

The story by now is, that the hero is sent to the Icewind-Mountains too help a weapons transport which is stuck in the snow. On the way he comes to several dungeons where he meets frequently the villain "Ohno", who is an absolute dumbass! He is so stupid, you can't believe it, if haven't seen him. One dungeon, he is building, is still under construction, when your hero comes in it.
So, there are many dangers on the way to the transport. In the end of this quest you have to fight against an ice-golem, who thratens the transport.
That's all we have by noe, and we don't know how to go on.

If I forgot something in the storyline, please write it down, Kappa.

I forgot that damned storyline long ago...but I really think we should overthink the story again...

Thanks very much again for the rewievs ^.^ . @Gnomish: That was my approximately 10th attempt to write a decent Battle Music. It's hard!!!!
I'll search through my computer if I can find something else from the RPG. I just came back from a rehersal weekend with the Youth Symphony Orchestra Wilmersdorf-Charlottenburg and I have lots of stuff to do. But maybe tomorrow...

OK, sorry for double posting, but I thought this needs a new post.

I finally found something from the RPG. I often make sketches of my music for a piano (these sketches aren't playable, they're more like a vocal score). For example, I wrote the Battle sketch while guiding a friend of mine through the fire-dungeon in Zelda:Wind Waker.
I found this one in my RPG music folder. I played too much Wind Waker before writing this, you can hear it I think. winndich has made a great orchestration of this, he'll post it soon. Unfortunately, there's no title for this one, so please suggest something.

Dude, I really love your battle composition. You've got to teach me the notes for the drums because I'm trying to do an RPG theme for my next piece and I need the correct dramatic effect for bits of it (that's if you don't mind of course!). I'd like to hear the orchestration for the piano piece once its finished. I think it'll sound good in that.

@ an-kun: Thanks very much for your rewiev. Of course I'd like to help with drums, just PM me.
The orchestration was finished long ago by winndich, he just has to post it here (he is informed).

Battle: Great stuff! But for the ending, I was expecting a big bang of some sort, hehe.

Ghost Town: Also a great song, but I actually don't think the title is appropriate. Too jazzy, er, film noir-ish, gangsta-like?

Something Evil: I think this one is more worthy of the title 'Ghost Town', because ghosts are mostly evil, right? Haha . .

Piano Sketch: I love the rhythm, and also the duet between the right and left hands. And it actually sounds playable to me, hmm . . and it's been a while since I've heard Wind Waker music, but at the moment I don't hear the resemblance =P

So, here's the orchestration of the piano sketch. Hope you guys like it.

It's game music so it always repeats itself. I don't think the bang is necessary but that's my personal opinion.

Thanks to Al. That film noir theme came to my mind, too, but I forgot it soon and named it "Ghost Town"... :sweatdrop:
If this would be a concert version of the Battle Music, it would end with a big bang, thats for sure. But since I want to use it in an RPG, it ends so abruptly.
I like winndich's orchestration, what about you?

The orchestration isn't too shabby at all, though it doesn't seem to stray far from the original. Some more harmonic reinforcement would've been nice, though the lack thereof does make it very dramatic (almost overly so). This sort of piece feels very rhythmic, so a more elaborate drumloop would've helped a lot (add some toms, kicks, and hats along with the snares - and vary the velocity, so that the snare doesn't sound like a machinegun when you roll it). I'm not familar with Wind Waker music, but this piece has certainly has strong Celtic overtones to it. This definitely would work well as battle music though.

The bit at 1:18 sounds like it should be in like the overworld section of the game where you're exploring.

1:52 sounds like good minigame music.

I think overall this will sound good as overworld music.

Yer i see where the windwaker element comes into it but it's not the same music, just used as inspiration instead which is good!

Guess I've been listening to too much FF piano collections, hehe . . but the way I see it, even though the music is meant to loop around in the game, the music should still stand on its own merit . . or maybe it's because I complain about people's endings the most? So don't mind me and my 'big bang' =P

@Al: No one's cross. I like the pieces with endings more than pieces that stop abruptly/loop, too. But since it would be weird in an RPG if the music stops all of a sudden, there's no ending, but I think I'll compose one.

@an-kun: Overworld Music is a good idea, thanks.
