View Full Version : How Many Anime Dvds/tapes Do You Own?

Gand

Just curious! Movies or series, if it counts as anime you can count it! No divx or anything like that... it has to be a DVD/VHS you bought or were given.

I have 27 DVDs at last count... but I have a friend who has well over 1000 DVDs and tapes... @_@

Just 3 very good ones: Akira, Princess Mononoke, and Cowboy Bebop: The movie. Unless you count me taping the Blue Gender, FlCL, Trigun, and Kikaider off of adult swim. The rest of the anime I've seen is either off of animesuki, I got it from the library, or I saw it from adult swim. And a few peices here and there from kazaa.

Ok, now lesse...I am far from an uber Anime collector, and quite far from an expert of any kind. Since we are only counting bought DVD's here goes:

Trigun Collection (8 Dvds) +
Evangelion Collection (8 Dvds) = 16 +
End of Eva = 17 +
Death and Rebirth = 18 +
Hellsing Collection (4 Dvds) = 22 +
Final Fantasy Unlimited (Discs 1 and 2) = 24 +
Full Metal Panic = (Discs 1 to 6) = 30 +
Excel Saga Collection (6 Dvds) = 36 +
Akira = 37 +
Ninja Scroll = 38 +
Lain Collection (4 Dvds) = 42 +
Ghost in the SHell = 43 +

and thats uhh  more then I thought I had...

I have 40 DVDs I think... but loads of taped stuff (about 50+ tapes), and VCDs too (which are legal, can you believe it)

I like anime. But I don't want to spend money on it. For one, I don't have the money, and besides that, I'll watch a series once or twice maybe. I think paying a lot of money for that simply isn't worth it. Maybe if a really good series was released here for a reasonable price (FLCL, Fruits Basket to name two ones I wouldn't mind having) I'd consider buying them, but good series never show up here and I don't care about DBZ and Digimon DVDs and videos.

heh.. i went on a spending craze as soon as i got into college and i have about 70 anime dvd's now.. getting a steady flow of about 4 a week

edit: GOD.. i've just been thinking about this... with the money i spent on them its actually equivalent to maybe 100 dvd+... the V-Gundam special edition pack (the spending craze) was.. 132,000 yen... I was mad wasn't I

i think it was worth it.. it came in a very well.. not-so-flash case but to own such a classic.. a limited edition too.. *goes into the otaku-pride mode*

internet is so crap here and with the lame supplies in shops i just buy them online.. credit card is good

I have the complete Evangelion series (eps 1-26) on VHS as well as Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion on DVD (except they're my boyfriend's bday present, but I'll probably end up watching 'em too so they are technically mine! ;)) I really want to see .hack//SIGN but being in the back of beyond with the nearest HMV in London/Lakeside, as well as poor, it's kinda unlikely I'm gonna get it any time soon :( The only Anime I've really been able to find is Metropolis in our local video shop and Spirited Away.

(btw, what is Bit Torrent and is it illegal?)

I'll usually download a bunch of fansubs, then I'll find something I really like and buy it as the DVDs are being released in the US. I did that with Noir, Witch Hunter Robin, Full Metal Panic, and a few others... I'm waiting for GitS:SAC to come out on DVD :D

After I saw Princess Mononoke (which I borrowed from a friend), I went out and bought almost every Miyazaki DVD that was out :heh:

So you're proud to be an obsessive fanboy? :eyebrow: riiiight.... Basically, "otaku" is an insult and personally I use the word in its real meaning.

Since Neon Genesis Evangelio was my first and also best anime Ive seen..... so 2 months ago I decided to kinda eternalize it..... so I pruchased the Neon Genesis Evangelion Prefect DVD Collection (*pffffffffffff*) and 2 weeks later End of Evangelion...... the DVDBox cost me a lot but I didn't regret it one single bit

A friend of my is in Japan and is gonna buy me a Rei action-figure to add to my collection !! XD

Neko Koneko
June 10th, 2004, 09:26 am
People who buy action figures scare the shit out of me....

Interloper
June 10th, 2004, 09:40 am
well Rei left some kind of mark, because my opinion is that Rei had so much meaning while she was almost always on the background....... I haven't switched my desktop for almost a year now  and no im not buy-an-action-figure-holic.... I just want Rei as action figure cauz my opinion is that Rei had so much meaning in NGE

It's more like a symbolic thing that's all

Neko Koneko
June 10th, 2004, 09:43 am
Even so, people who buy action figures freak me out. There's just something wrong about it in my opinion, unless you're a kid. Otherwise you're just some otaku (= obessed fanboy) X_X

Interloper
June 10th, 2004, 09:47 am
nah, in my case you can compare it with keeping someone's ashes after cremation...

ya see, im trying to make the memory I have from NGE eternal, that has nothing to do with fanboy or being a kid..... as I said, more a symbolic kind of thing..... if I was a fanboy I would buy every DVD of every series I saw.... no I've got DSL already for that, to download my ass of that is....

Neko Koneko
June 10th, 2004, 09:49 am
No matter what excuse one may use, I find it disturbing. It's just an anime, and actually not even a very good one =P there are anime with much better stories and much better characters. But, we're going off topic now. I stilll have zip anime on DVD. Could make my own videos though.

Well, Eva is good but it's overrated and I agree I wasn't much better. Still, a site is a nice pasttime while a action figure is just... a piece of plastic you can't do anything with.

Unfortunetly, most of my Anime DVDs got stolen. :crybaby: I owned about 30 from different series, but now I just own the DVDs that came with .hack//SIGN. After my next pay check, I'm going to start buying DVDs starting with CCS.

yaaaaaayy!!!

I found someone else who knows that otaku is a bad thing

technically, an otaku just means an obsessor, and it doesn't even necessarily mean anime (well, I guess in the english speaking world it does. Just another form of our ignorance)

as for DVDs, I share my DVD collection with kage, so we have the same amount ^_^

Akira(movie)
Ghost in the shell(movie)

I try and avoid buying seires because I'll end up searching to find the lot and that will cost more that I really want to spend

I suppose you have a point angelic, if you can't purchase them in your country...

It's weird, I have no problem with DVD rips or whatever of movies, but when it comes to anime I really feel strongly about purchasing it. Not only is it supporting the animators, but it's encouraging the licensers and publishers to bring more anime out of Japan.

Movies make most of their money with theatrical releases -- anime doesn't have this luxury. I only buy anime that I enjoy of course, and not without watching the fansub first... but if I enjoy something I support them by purchasing the DVDS.

its like music. although you can download them off the net for free, for some truly good albums you like, you'd rather buy them..
maybe its just "i want the have the official copy" rather than just a "i want to have a copy" thing..

and yeah, slow connection is just another reason for buying them rather then downloading them

BTW, on a television you don't see the difference between a Hi-Q DivX file and a DVD =P and I don't have dolby 5.1 anyway, so in the end I'd be paying for stuff I don't even need at all.

If anime DVDs were sold for a reasonable price I might consider buying some, but they are just way too expensive for what they offer <_<
