Break what down? Anyway, anyone hear of Muay Thai? This is a Thai Martial Art, and oh man it is awesome, you can easly take any size of opponent down in one hit!

There are many ways to KO a man in one hit.

The question is: Do you want the hit to be lethal?

Flipping takes a lot of leg muscle. i can only do front flips...i learned that myself, and back flips....who knows! anywho, just run, jump up really high, and act like your doing a tumble...but in midair. it's the jump that counts!

I'm interested in Tai Chi, it looks relaxing. But I want to do Taek won do more, I like the kicks they do, very flashy.

Anyone in the know that can make a breakdown of Wing Chun and Aikido for me? I've only time to learn one discipline, and I'd choose the one more practical for tight spaces (think buses and nightclubs) and grappling (on-the-floor) scenarios.

EDIT: Well, looks like there's a Krav Maga school in London, so there goes the illusion of free will choice. =P

Yeah I stay in my martial arts class for 3-4 hours, twice a week. That is only because I am so dedicated and I get the lessons for free!

On Mondays, and every other Friday, I take Karate and Kobudo, for an hour (and 1.5 hours on Mondays.) Every Tuesday and Sunday, I take Kung Fu for an hour. And every Wednesday and Friday, I am in a competition team for 2 hours. So I guess overall, I average 8 hours a week on martial arts, excluding practice at home. And exluding the competitions I go to as well.

So... ah, this must be a really stupid question for all of you, but what are the specific differences between: Tae-Kwon-Do, Kung Fu, Karate, Ninjitsu, Jujitsu, Kenpo, Kobudo, Aikido, and any other ones I can't think of.

Anime_Girl_Jenni
October 9th, 2005, 04:09 pm
Tae Kwon Do's specialty is Kicking, Kung Fu is about copying different animals to conceal techniques, Karate is a more all-a-round style. Ninjutsu is the art of stealth attacking, Jujustsu is the Samurai art of Grapling, Kenpo is basically anything goes but specializes in atacking pressure points, Kobudo I'm not sure about, and Aikido, is the art of thowing, specializing in using your opponents attack against them.
Does that help?

Nightmare
October 9th, 2005, 05:08 pm
Close. Kobudo, often going with Karate, is using weapons. I am in Kobudo myself, and so we pretty much use the traditional Japanese weapons like Bo, Nunchaku, Kama, Sai, and so forth. Kung Fu deals a lot with animals, but it's not always to conceal techniques. It's more about mimicing the animals. For example, we do the tiger for pure power, the mantis to get very close to the enemy, and monkey we jump in and out. There are some animals that conceal techniques, but others are very open.

Aikido is about some throwing yes, but the real dojo's focus on making use of Ki energy, hense Aikido. I would like to take Aikido, but I am already doing too many forms of martial arts as it is.

I used to like Martial arts when I was younger, and I thought it was really cool. Nowadays though, I think it's been ruined. Most people are there just because they loooooove anything that's japanese. They've seen it on movies or played it on games, and they want to do it too. Same goes with food, why the hell does people eat noodles just because they're japanese? Here you go sweetie. No mom, I want ramen! RAMEN RAMEN RAMEN

Of course I shouldn't judge the whole concept because of fanboyism, but it's hard not to. There are just too many geeks who "seek for their destiny (oooh)" in Martial arts.

Shame.

Yes, that helped. Thank you to all who answered.

I want to take aikido and kungfu. However, Kenpo really got me interested. I would like to know more about pressure points.

Anime_Girl_Jenni
October 10th, 2005, 04:43 am
There are three main points on the human wrist that when combined raise the blood pressure.

combined with 2 more points on the human body will result in a KO
This is very effecive against punches if you happen to be lightning fast.

7 or more points struck will result in death. Although there are certain points on the human body that when struck once can result in both KO and death which is the foundation of Dim Mak. I only know a few but those will result in loss of strength.
Don't even ask me to explain where those points are, I do not know the single hit KO, and death points. and the ones I do know are dangerous if not used properly.

Grab the right wrist and apply pressure to points Lung point 9, Paricardiun ponit 6, and Heart point 6

Then by striking to the right of the throat just under the jaw,(Stomach point 9) and then up at the under muscle of the Jaw(Stomach point 6) will result in a KO. If done too lightly a black out will be the result.

To revive a KOed person massage the point on the right side at the of the skull at the back of the neck(Gall Bladder point 20). This is for reference only please do not attempt to KO someone with this technique unless it is under close supervision of a Black belt that knows what your doing.

AsianSensation_wow
October 10th, 2005, 04:12 pm
 ...ok...just kick him in the crotch then run XD j/k.

i KO by kicking the jaw at tournaments, knock em out, they wind up w/ a headache, and you win. Hurrah hurrah

Anime_Girl_Jenni
October 10th, 2005, 04:21 pm
I don't know anyone stupid enough to allow themselves to get kicked in the jaw. or crotch, they are all to advanced for those tricks and can easily catch your leg and take you to the ground and grapple you into submission.

I want to learn all about these pressure points. Are there anyone who teaches this kind of art in new York?

Anime_Girl_Jenni
October 10th, 2005, 10:09 pm
There is a Dojo in NY called Elite Defence Tactics which specializes in Kenpo, and Jujutsu. Kenpo is where you will learn to use Pressure points, as for the location, I don't know but you might be able to email them and find out.

Their Official Website is
http://www.elitedefensivetactics.com/index.html

One of my former grand masters was able to use the 5 point KO so effectivly his apponent didn't know what hit them. He was able to hit all 5 points in less then 1 second.

dominate_ze_vorld
October 11th, 2005, 02:43 am
Isn't it true that if you just derive a kick (I just read this from a book, so, it's most likely wrong) to the throat, you'd automatically kill the person?

Sukate
October 11th, 2005, 03:28 am
Oh man, my grandmaster/grandfather, knows just about every pressure piont on your body. You don't want to cooperate, then he'll make ou, he hasn't taught me them yet, he doesn't think I'm ready, BTW, I will be able to test for my Black belt this spring! Finaly after all these years!

Anime_Girl_Jenni
October 11th, 2005, 03:29 am
Any Strike to the throat can kill a person if you crush the wind pipe, but unless you actually crush the wind pipe, it won't kill them.

dominate_ze_vorld
October 11th, 2005, 03:29 am
How long have you trained?

Ah... all right. I thought so. I would think it would just lose their vocal chords, with a painful throat, but I wasn't sure if it would just... kill them on the spot.

No Problem, If you do take martial arts make sure that it is at least a meduim to full contact Dojo, otherwise you'll get a false sence of security and when and if you need to use it you won't hit and that will be that.

I wish I could do Martial Arts. I have wanted to forever. Do you think that it is bad to start late? Like in your teens? We don't have the money for that kind of thing...but I plan to get a job. Balance a job, school, and martial arts classes...I can do it!

Sukate
October 11th, 2005, 10:51 pm
I've been training sence I was about 8 years old. you see the reason why it took so long is because when you are a little kid, they have you go through a whole different ranking scale. Sure the belts are the same colors, but there is a white stripe in the middle that signifies that you are of the childrens rank. I was recently put into the Advanced class and I had to start all over in my belt rankings, but I am almost there now baby! YEAH!

dominate_ze_vorld

it never hurts to start marial arts when you are older just that the ones who have studied it when they were little will have that mutch more expiriance jump start. (that is if they were serious in it like I was) but I suggest taking it period, so that you will always have that knowledge of defending yourself, it's kinda like a condom, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. ^^ (sorry it that was perverted, it was the only way that I could explaine what I ment...)

I havent taken classes yet, but will in the near future. The costs there are pretty high ($300 for three months I think.) but its pretyt worth it since you can come there everyday and train there. They also follow the rule where you cannot go up a level until you've trained for 6 months as a beginner. Definately not a fake =D

just a teeny correction on this post which was posted WAY back, its from the philippines

the word kamagong in martial arts must be from the same word (kamagong) which is a type of tree in the phils. :P

@wu tang: what's it like, kendo? is it heavy?

Wu Tang
February 15th, 2006, 10:41 pm
uhhh, well heavy in the sense of equipment, then sometimes
but thats only because my mook-do (dunno how to spell it) is actually heavier then the everyone elses

but if you mean heavy in terms of intense, then i guess sometimes
i mean the exercises arent that bad, but the memorization of attack patterns and such can get tough at times
but sparring is pretty cool though, and far from intense, unless you have some physical condition or something

this is just from my personal experience though

Sukate
February 16th, 2006, 04:53 am
just a teeny correction on this post which was posted WAY back, its from the philippines

Yeah...I think I know that, I mean it isn't like I'm from there or anything...(yeah that was sarcasm) it was just a typo

And yes the name of it was taken from the kamagong tree. Because the wood from the tree is super strong and is nearly unbreakable. And that is what the martial arts is if you know all the ins and outs of it (not there yet) And plus they make the fighting sticks that we use out of the Kamagong tree
(specially ordered) those sticks can crack a human head like a water-mellon.

Yeah the weapon that you are thinking off is the Kusari-gama. They would be way hard to use, I think.

BTW ant opportunity for matrial arts is better than none at all. Just when you go take classes, look for the REAL DEAL. Not one that all they do is train you to get a gold medal. One that teaches you how to over come what is in your way. Doesn't have to be a big guy trying to beat you up, but one that you can apply to all aspects in your life.

DiamondSeraph
March 29th, 2006, 12:06 am
Good to know, by the way that Kusari-gama seems so weird! you know this guy in a manga "flame of recca" doesn't seem to be using it right acoording to wikipedia. Regardless I don't think I'd want to fight someone who could use that.

Walking a little off topic... with all those super cool martial moves out there(and from what I been reading from you guys), do you think that a martial artist with enough skillz and dexterity be able to go against a gun or firearm. Now, what I mean to say is that in all sorts of anime, old martial arts movies and books the hero is almost always impervious to bullet fire. For instance may have noticed that ninjas cannot be shot or killed be a bullet (usually), only stabbed with a katana by a equally powerful ninja (who is usually out for vengence or somthing like that...) Anyway professional gunmen vs. super trained martial artist, to who goes the spoils of victory...

Let's be realistic now.

Anime_Girl_Jenni
May 3rd, 2006, 02:51 am
any gunman with a distance of 10-15 feet will win against any martial artist. 5 feet is a different story, I can cover that distance in a very quick move but it would take an extremely skilled person to keep from getting shot.

The whole philosophy of martial arts is that you learn it so you don't have to use it. Anyone to teaches otherwise is full of BS.

A ninja relies on stealth and deception, he could be your gardener, or the Janitor, or even the matenance guy. The whole idea is that you don't know until it's too late. They will usually earn your trust before striking.

Anything you see in the movies is just hollywood garbage.

The name of it is Kamagong, an old Philippino Martial Art. Teaches not streangth but power over your opponent. Teaches you to controll your feelings of anger and hate. Strickly Self-Defence, but you name a boan I can break it.

i have my own moves.... they r of no martial arts i know of, i just use them at times of imprtance, It is needent u should have ur own moves, for it could surprise the opponent. Like whenever im sitting ther talkin with my friends id say... hey, i can kill u with that pencil, or i could use that chair as a weapon. Or if i would at my house i would say, Hey, i can kill u with that nail clipper, or i can kill u with that hot coffee. U c, anything is a weapon to me, doesnt need to be anything special. As they always say, "Use your surroundings." And it is true martial arts to not just fight with a made-for-fighting tools. Basically, a true fighter uses everything liftable or movable, as a weapon. Trust me, it works. Im a mysterious man. If u were to be my friend in my local area, u would know more about me, but not much.
If ud like to know how i use all these wierd things as a weapon, feel free to ask.

Well...some one who braggs that much about using anything as a weapon cannot possibly beat one who has real training. Like I said before, "Humility is the key" Sorry but it is true. And beeing self taught how to us a weapon is possible but unlikly that you will be anygood, unless you have had previose training and kinda know how to react to your opponents moves. Because the sinarios you come up with in your head, never come true. Then you will be expecting that sort of fight and they fight different and then you get beat. I don't mean to flame you guys but I know lots of people who think they came up with "un-beatable moves" then a simple shift in weight and they are on the floor looking up at you. And even though you can use anything as a weapon, doesn't nessisaraly mean that it will be effective especially if there is someone who knows what to do. Like the chair for example; the chair is really really big, and too heavy to swing around, so the swings you use can be easly read and predidcted, easly counterd. And the Nail clippers....come on! What the hell are you going to do with them? Throwing them is your best bet, they are way too tiny to really do damage and can easly be taken away.

BTW yes, I am Filippino

Well, with the anil clippers, you could throw to the neck of the opponent, this is usally very useful when outnumbered. Throw to the neck of the opponent, causing him to choke for a while because of the sharp tip of it. But I take back the killing part, I guess I could say subdue. And the chair thing, I'm not talkin about thoses office chairs, more of the portable chairs you see everywhere. Sorry about the bragging ya'll, I was a bit worked up. And yeah, I'd say that knowing some type martial arts is a saver a lot. But, to know a list of your own would surprise the opponent allowing him to confuse himself and most probably unable to react fast enough.

{CriMsoN_DraGoN}

The useness of the nunchucks are really to defend on reallly close body ranges. It is to protect it from direct attacks. Usually it takes a lot of skill and many years of skill to truly use it as so as you use a katana or staff.

Staffs are like the coolest of things btw I can do so much stuff with it its so funny.

The characters in Naruto have much more physical ability than anybody(I think) on this board. If you haven't even trained at all, how do you expect to copy anything from a show about people who have trained their entire lives?

Also, please try to use capitalization and proper grammar. It's just a personal pet peeve, but I think people should try to speak and write properly.

Seeker of Wisdom

I personally practice kenjutsu, some jujutsu, some judo and some ninjutsu. That is to say I know techniques from the latter three and practice the first regularly. I have learned that improvosation is one of the keys to success, especially if one can blend several styles into one fluid technique. Instead of relying soely on one style in combat I weave a few in to keep my oponent off balance. It's fun really.

For Hiei: Jujutsu has been called an art that is both soft and hard at once. Way back when in ancient Japan this was practiced, but too many people died in sparring sessions. This led to the creation of Judo, which is a not-as-dangerous form of Jujutsi. Jujutsu focuses on grapples, joint locks, a few strikes/sweeps, submission holds and other techniques. Basically, you paralyze an oponent by manipulation of their limbs and joints, placing them in a submissive hold and proceeding to break their bones. It uses leaverage as the ultimate tool. Most joints work best going in one direction. Jujutsu makes them go in the other direction. The philosophy of jujutsu is simple: why wrestle your oponent to the ground when you can break their knee and let them fall on their own?

Ninjutsu, on the other hand, is IMHO the ultimate fighting style in terms of sheer efficiency. Quite simply, it's focus is on killing the oponent as fast and as well as possible. This is accomplished through a variety of means, each one exploiting a vital weakness in the human anatomy. Nerve strikes, knife hands, organ rupturing and other techniques were ninjutsu's secret weapon. You know the ninjas? Those guys that are better than pirates? Ninjutsu was their way of killing. It does not rely on strength as Muay Thai does, nor speed as Kung Fu, but rather superior technique and skill.

Does that help?

Sukate
September 27th, 2006, 08:15 am
Heh, jujutsu sounds a lot like Kamagong ^^

I find that most martial arts these days concentrate on flashy movements and forms. I find that pretty useless. In my opinion its best to stick with simple strikes that are more effective. Also, forms don't have much use in a real fight, because its a series of planned movements (like dancing), fights will never go as planned unless its practise sparring.
the above statement is just my opinion from observing and expirance, but feel free to correct me if you feel i'm wrong. and also to make it clear, i said most martial arts not all. for exapmle JKD (the type of martial arts bruce lee uses) doesn't teach forms but just plain self defence, like various ways of blocking, holds, trips, and striking weak spots of the body.

During the induction, we were taught some simple forearm blocks for simple swinging attacks, and we would practice on each other.

My gawd but were my forearms bruised before the night was over. Apparently one year of Wing Chun turns your arms into bars of steel or something like that. I also discovered that I have tremendous difficulty when attempting to hit her using a direct punch, as that would involve contact with the bouncy bits. =|
