Uwaaaaaaa~!!!!!!!! Who else totally loves the Studio Ghibli movies??!! I've only seen Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke), Sen to Chihiro no Kamikaushi (Spirited Away) and Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro). BUT I'm going to definitely see Howl's Moving Castle when it comes out. ^_^

Howl's Moving Castle was really good... I'd rank it behind Spirited Away and Mononoke, but it's really hard to top those two. Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service, Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Nausicca are all amazing as well.

Mononoke is my favorite anime film by far ^_^

The Cat Returns! :D That was my fave, but I'm a cat nut so there we go ;) My Neighbour Totoro was great as well, though I didn't like Spirited Away so much - I thought some of the other Ghibli films would be much more deserving of Academy Awards :)

i saw some preview of princess Mononoke, it shows a girl (the princess i presume) throwing a spear at a man's arm, both the spear and the arm ended up on a tree, i was quite shock, i mean, that scene may not be suitable for minors
anyways, laputa was really good, its better than spirited away in my opinion. a lot more adventure.

The first Ghibli film I saw was PRincess Mononoke.
Needless to say, I completely lost my mind over it.

It's still amazing every time I watch it.

Now, I own a whole ton of them....

The Cat Returns (DVD)
Spirited Away (DVD)
Princess Mononoke (VHS)
Porco Rosso (DVD)
Kiki's Delivery Service (2 different VHS versions...I have to buy the DVD...)
My Neighbout Totoro (DVD and VHS)
Grave of the Fireflies (DVD and VHS)
Laputa: Castle in the Sky (DVD)
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind (DVD)
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (VHS)

I'd like to get DVD versions of all of them.

and on top of those I've seen
Panda! GO Panda! (which I'm probably going to buy....so damn cute....)
Pon Poko (this one was friggin' awesome! Loved it!)
On Your Mark (a music video, but still quite good)

oh..and I've also got the book 'Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation', and all of the Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind manga. (the original Viz Perfect Collection series ^_^)
The manga is much better than the film. I thought that the English cast (despite being all big names) sucked ass. They were actually really damn terrible. X_X

So, I think I'm officially a Ghibli nut-bar. @_@
I think I own all the films they've officially released in North America.

I'd still like to see how terrible Warriors of the Wind is though.....

yay for this thread!
I've seen and own so far : Laputa, Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away, and Kiki's Delivery Service. They are all very good I watch Mononoke almost constantly. It's got such a beautiful story and a memorable soundtrack. I was so happy that Futureshop carried them. I prefer watching them in Japanese with subtitles over the english dub.

Lupin III: castle to carsarago [or what ever it was..O_O], Totoro, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Servce, Mononoke Hime.

The funny thing was we wached Lupin III in school, because my teacher wanted up to watch a Mayaski movie, but Spirited Away was out at Blockbusters O_O

~

Has any one seen this movie called 'Chie the Brat'? Its about a little girl who has to run the family resturant because the parents are devorced and gone...it sounds sad but I herd its very funny...

~

Also, I noticed somthing in Spirited Away. When you see the family driving in the beginging, when Chihiro looks out the window, you can see a Camphor Tree!!!

I also really like all of Miyazaki's stuff - though I like it both because of the animation, story, and most especially the music - Joe Hisaishi is my god ^^. By the way, you can see a list of all Ghibli's stuff at nausicaa.net; it's the most complete english fansite i've seen, tho I wish i could read japanese and go to their main site.

What I don't quite understand is - what about Miyazaki's stories are so endearing? They're really, really fun and amazing to see, but *why*? Aside from the super high quality of the animation and sound?

Totoro makes compleat sense! It has a childs quality, so you probably have to be young to understand it.

Well, Totoro is a way out of the harsh reality for Satsuki and Mai. He isnt real, but helps them in many ways. The movie gives many subtle teachings, such as when Mai and Stauki are in the forest waiting for their dad's bus. That part is when Satuki finaly releases her inner child and steps down from over protective sister / mother-roll.

T_T I love that movie!

Omg, i totally love Studio Ghilbli flims, so much that i bought the limited box edition lol, that had every single movie in it, of course, it is actually going out of date now lols...but yer, my favourite one will be WHISPHER OF THE HEART! omg, it is so good, i love that romance, and self discovery thing lol, it is jsut my favourite genre ^_^

and yer, the characters in that one is just beautiful, and the art has a very shoujo manga feel to it, and the colour scheme that it uses is a very light and summery feel lol, it is just a lovely movie, should watch it if you have the chance!

Well, Totoro is a way out of the harsh reality for Satsuki and Mai. He isnt real, but helps them in many ways.

Totoro is real in the movie! He is a ancient Japanese spirit (a Mononoke) who lives in the camphor tree by their house. Satsuki and Mei made contact with him and he helped them out. However, after the movie they never met Totoro again because they didn't need his help anymore because they matured. By the way, this is my favorite Ghibli movie. (Although, I love them all) I fell in love with it the first time I saw it 15 years ago.

I saw the first half of totoro. One thing I dislike about Ghibli is their animation style: the little kid has a face that looks like Tweety's, but with a frog mouth and little pig eyes instead of a beak and big eyes.

Other than that the animation looks pretty good (for a film that's 18 years old) and it was pretty enjoyable. Get to see the rest next week.

btw, the little totoros are cool.

OMG dont get me started! I made a childrens book for school on Chibi Totoro and Mai and it took me 2 months to make. But it was totaly worth it, I spent hours on one picture, and thats without color.

Now, I do have one little problem with Ghibli. All their characters resemble each other. Young, pudgy, just childish. But its become a Ghibli mark now.

I know that FOX has a DVD available but I do not really want that one because I already own the VHS. (And it does not have the Japanese language track, nor is it Formatted to 1:85:1):bleh: I do want to get the new Disney release because I want the Japanese language track. And as for the new Dubb I know it will most likely suck. (Dakota Fanning as Satsuki does not really appeal to me.) But I am going to watch it with a open mind and not try to compare it to FOX's version.

You mean it lacks a badguy? I don't really care about that. The whole thing just lacks something to make it great. It's okay, just not as great as some people say it is. That's what I think anyway.

Most of Studio Ghibli films do not have any obvious "antagonist", including the top rated films. Rather, the antagonists are actually the circumstances that the characters are in. Examples: My Neighbour Totoro; Grave of the Fireflies; Only Yesterday; Kiki's Delivery Service; Whisper of the Heart; The Cat Returns, just to name a few.

And even in other films, one realises that the "antagonists" aren't really the bad, vicious, inhumane guys that Hollywood so stupidly depict then kill off at the end. Examples are: Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind; Princess Mononoke; Porco Rosso; Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away.

Miyazaki's son is directing an adaptation of Ursula K. LeGuin 'A Wizard of Earthsea'
Its supposed to come to Japanese theatres in July 2006.

I say picture of a Ghibli film on a Japanese site, and it was of a girl flying and she had wings. Anyone care to tell me what it is? *the characters were made designed SO well BTW*

Anyways, im sad theres no Miyazaki at the Oscars (its today :P). I think Howls Moving Castle beats out any other animated films this year. Im ashamed that American films cant be serious and have a good moral that doesnt involve non-stop silly crap.

Ghibli is doing some ad or like a drink or somthing (maybe I read it wrong and its just for the movie it self) that features sketches and images from Tales from Earthsea.

You're all mentioning the more famous ones in the West, but noone seems to have mentioned the some of the more classic ones from the collection, like The Ocean Waves and Only Yesterday.

Ocean Waves moved a little slowly in my opinion, but Only Yesterday was really beautiful... Of course, I love Princess Mononoke and stuff too, but I really wanna see Totoro. I also have Steamboy (is it Ghibli?) but its not in english so I dont get it...>_<

No, Steamboy was made by the Akira person/people.

Anyways, see Totoro. Its a super great movie.

Wallace and Gromit and Howl's Moving Castle are both very good movies, each using a very unique and different technique.
Personally............ I really wanted Miyazaki to win. He's just truly amazing. Hopefully he'll get nominated again and produce yet another masterpiece!

I heard that Miyazaki is only doing one more film, and after that he's stopping!

And my friends and i were supposed to see Howl's Moving Castle but of course that plan went bust so I'll get that, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, and Mononoke Hime when I'm not broke..... By ther way If you haven't seen Sprited Away Laputa, Mononoke Hime or Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind they're all coming on on Cartoon Network starting and March 18 for a "Month of Miazaki" thing and one movie will be shown a week for a whole month so check it out!

I'm in Sydney. It used to be on, but not anymore. This was quite a while ago ^^''

back on topic, I just realized... (being a bit slow) that The Cat Returns movie is not by Miyazaki... I was wondering why not many people have heard/talked about it. It wasn't as great a movie as Howl's Moving Castle or other miyazaki classics in my opinion, but it was still pretty good.

The other non-miyazaki studio ghibli movie i liked was grave of fireflies, and having watched the live action version of it recently, I appreciate the anime even more simply because it's so much better =D

"grave of the Fireflies" i thought it was "tombstone for Fireflies"?? or thats what i've heard!Ohwell... yeh that file is really depressing!

Especially when the little girl dies! and the brother dies in the start! n gosh do i hate their aunty/woman who took all their food and complained about how the boy wasn't helping! oh and when the brother was being beatn up by that man when he was stealing! oh and when the little girl was offering the little mud cakes she'd made to her brother!! aww soo many sad scenes! :upset:  :crybaby:

But a wicked film! i really luv Princess Mononoke and KiKi's devilery service!

@Sobekswrath: I'm in Australia too. Yeah, on public TV it's all on SBS or it's kid's stuff like Pokemon. Cartoon Network has Adult Swim but the Aussie AS is slower and less varity than the American one. I borrow from the library and video store or wait for Madman. Or......illegally....

@Kendo-girl: COmpletely off-topic and a little pedantic, but in you sig. You ahven't capitalized "Japanese" which is insulting, (I'm Chinese, but hey *shrug) and oriental. Ugh. Makes us sound like carpets. Even so, captilizaiton! or better yet, "Asian". Even though that does classify India, I know a lot of Indians who like to be called Curry. Some, not all though, just s you know. But yeah. Oriental. Not many people use that... :heh:

It's all a matter of taste. Yes, Miyazaki is great, but people die, that's what people do. Personally, one of my favourites has to be Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

You're an idiot.

I've noticed something else in the ghibli films I've seen so far: poor voice acting for certain characters. I personally think that especially the younger characters (especially Chihiro in spirited away) sound like they never had proper acting lessons. In fact, her voice sounds like it's all read from a paper (which is in essence the case but still, it shouldn't sound like that).

I think it's a shame for it does ruin a lot IMO.

Ok ok yeah her voice is well litte not good, but she is a child afterall , are they supposed to sound like an angel. Because this is through Miyazaki's eyes ok. They all dont have to sound picture perfect ok. And also did you sound so great when you were child. But yeah your right about her voice but everythingelse. DON'T NOK IT MAN!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I FINALLY got Whisper of the Heart/If You Listen Closely from the library yesterday, and watched it right away. I know people have called it cheesy, but actually, it really isn't all that bad. It's like a mixture between a Fairy Tale and also reality. A really good story line.. (only read if you've seen the full movie, bad spoilers. Lol)

It's funny-ironic how Shizuku hates the kid that annoys her, but in reality that's actually Seiji. Also, how Seiji tells Shizuku how he checked all those books out before her just to get to notice him. That's how I don't think this movie is just a Fairy Tale, more like lucky-fate and a big injection of reality as well. Of course, this would be a rare occasion is reality to what can 'really' happen. The only thing which got my thinking was how Seiji was only 14 and wanted to get married. @_@ Dramatic, but now when I think of it, it's kinda.. odd for his age? Ah whatever, still a great movie.

It also has a few good themes throughout it (as in the story, not the music; but the music ain't that bad either actually) which spoke to me a little.

(I'm gonna watch Princess Mononoke in a few minutes, I also got that ^.^)

I've seen all their films except My Neighbours the Yamadamas and Pom Poko. I'll give a brief review for the others...xP

Howl's Moving Castle:
Certainly one of the more romantic Ghibli films, and one of my favourite films of all time, this one's based on the book by Diana Wynne Jones. I'd recommend this film to anyone who likes anime.
Howl is just so cute!! ^_^

Spirited Away:
Ah, possibly the most well known anime film of all time. It's not my favourite, but certainly contains a lot of new ideas and a vast array of original characters, who are believable too. It's worth the watch, and has some beautiful music.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky:
One of my favourites, again. It was a great watch. Magical and deep, in places. The characters were wonderful, I thought, and the story wasn't without its charm.

Whisper of the Heart:
When I purchased this film off Amazon, I was highly doubtful. To me, it looked like it was aimed at VERY young children, between 3 and 5, but I was surprised. While it's certainly not an adult movie, it's not a kid's one either. It was surprisingly sweet and held some deeper meanings

The Cat Returns:
Ah, the intended "sequal" to Whisper of the Heart. Okay, this one's based almost entirely in a cat world. Weird, no? Haha, well, it's all done very well. Original and interesting, the time passed so fast while I watched this.

Princess Mononoke:
A lovely story, a lovely soundtrack, wonderful characters, and some repulsive ones too. Haha. It was weird towards the end, but well worth watching. It's one of my favourites, but not one I can watch too often.

Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind:
I enjoyed the story and the characters, but the sound felt flawed. It would have been a lot better with more music. It felt too serene during the battle scenes...

Porco Rosso:
Ahh, aren't all these films just magical? Yes. Yes, they are. Haha. Even when they're about a piolet who's turned into a pig. =]

Only Yesterday:
Charming, this film shows a lot about memories. While I watched it in Japanese, I still enjoyed it as much as the others. It was sweet.

Kiki's Delivery Service:
Well, this is probably the 2nd kiddiest one, but it's not without its charm. I'd say watch it, but don't expect it to be deep. It's more suited to children from 6 to 9 really. :P

Grave of the Fireflies:
One of the more grown up Ghibli films, yet one of the duller ones. It lacked the magical plot the others have and, despite meaning to be emotional, I felt nothing for the characters. It's alright, but not really something I'm wanting to go back to.

every movie is a great masterpiece @_@

Not every single movie ever made has been masterpiece material, but i probably would go as far as to say that the Studio Ghibli Collection does make that standard >.< but who am i to say?

Ohh and as for favorites i would have to say:

1: Laputa Castle in the Sky
2: Princess Mononuke
3: Spirited Away
4: Howl's Movie Castle

and number five being Kiki's Flying Delivery Service ^_^ muhahahahhaha
