 Aw, that's not a waste! Imagine what you know that most other people don't about playing an instrument. And 8 years on the violin, that's amazing. I only did 4 years for shit and giggles but I still loved it and I would do more if I could. And for everyone who taught themselves how to play the piano, great job, that's really admirable :)

This is my ninth year of playing the piano and my sixth year of playing the violin. I prefer piano. Violin is just a secondary instrument, because there are so many more things that you can do with it than piano. -.- Like, there's an orchestras you can audition for and more concerts and not to mention a school orchestra that you can attend to, but... piano, there are not that many choices, it's all outside-school stuff.

Hmm...I would say I started playing the recorder and piano in the 5th grade? I started playing the piano because I found out that I could play the same music that I did on the recorder, on the piano. And I played around with the sounds and notes. I'm in the 10th grade now. Anywho, I can't say I have been playing for 5 years because I'm not as dedicated as I should be. "Never give up on a talent." I'm trying not to, okay xD? I love my talent, but I wish I had all the time in the world for it.

1. How are piano levels determined? I don't know what level I'm at, but my teacher is making me play a full version of a Beethoven Sonata, so I assume I'm relatively high.
2. I taught myself for about a year on piano, then took lessons about 2 years. When we moved, I lost that teacher, and just friday, I found a new teacher! :D

if i dont:

Yea, guitar is a total instrument that you have to like.. and i dont hear it a lot in classical music, which i dont listen to Vivaldi much. I know he has guitar concertos or something. But i'd try guitar, but no one really in my family will teach me notes-single only 1 note- that i can compose or play better music. i know chords are a must, but the the highest must =/

Let's see... I play several instruments, with clarinet and piano being my best ones. I've started the piano when I was four, so that makes eleven years. Too bad I didn't practice as much as I should have... (must...practice...discipline). As for the clarinet, I've played it since I was eleven, so that's four years.

I've been playing the piano for 7 years and the clarinet for 6 years. I taught myself to play the piano, and I think I've made the most progress in the last few years compared to my earlier years. That might be partially due to the fact that I love the music that I'm playing as opposed to the boring songs that I started with. I learned how to play the clarinet through my school's band program. It's not much--just fingerings and the basics that are necessary for band. Yes, I'm lacking one-on-one instruction. :( I also played the recorder for a few years because my elementary school required that, and I played around with the violin for a few months.
So far, I find the piano the most satisfying, especially because of chords, even though I'm much better at the clarinet. The clarinet is a joy to play, but that's only while I'm in an ensemble of some sort. It's not that enjoyable when I'm playing on my own.

I've been playing the guitar for almost 2 years in a few months, and now recently I've gotten myself my very own digital-piano which I've been playing for no longer than maybe 6 months or so.
I feel like I'm developing less skills on the guitar now than I used to, and the piano is difficult but I can play a few final fantasy tunes, To Zanarkand, Silence before the Storm, a bit of Eternal Harvest, Underwater palace from FF I and stuff. It's way fun :) I feel I'm making progress though.

Let's see...
Piano- around...uh..4 years I think? I don't know the exact date or anything, heh heh. It's quite relaxing to play, even though a lot of the time I'm too lazy to practice! But I can play Kingdom Heart's Hikari, For Fruits Basket, You are My Love, To Zanarkand (parts of it, at least), Dearly Beloved, and some of the original compositions of Alex Kim such as Shy Love and Seventh Sense.
Flute-a little less than flute, but I'd say around 4 years too. I think I'm lazier with this one XD. But somehow I made it to Advanced Band...barely..

Usually people refer to books or something for their level. Violinists usually judge themselves by Suzuki books... but I am unfamiliar with them. Played for five years, private lessons for two, and never dealt with Suzuki and all. :\

Organ 16 years (My first instrument. I quit half way coz we cant get a music teacher when we moved, so my dad sold off my organ :P)
Piano 13 years (Should be counted as 10 years, coz the first 3 years was horrible. I changed like 10 teachers in those 3 years coz the music centre just cant seem to keep their music teachers happy)
Guitar classic 4 years (Self taught and totally suck at it. I just cant seem to get the F right coz I've got what they call 'basketball fingers' and F is like the basic of the basic)
Violin 3 years (Self taught also -suzuki books- I can play it ok but tuning the strings just pisses me off. I've chucked it somewhere and hope I'd be able to play it soon when I find myself a teacher - I'm too old to play violin T.T )
Flute 8 years (Due to my occational allergy attacks, I was forced to quit flute coz my lung evaluation was too low. The doctor said it was ok to continue playing, but my parents just did'nt like the idea, so I was banned from all woodwind instruments T.T I'd have tried to learn clarinet if they did'nt do that to me)
Drum less than a year (Totally suck at it too, just cant keep up - self taught)

i started out playing violin around 2nd grade and quit around 3rd. so i've been playing piano since i am 9 or so, i think... so that's about 11 yrs! it's kind of depressing though, when people who just started out learning are so much better than me!! when i took piano lessons i always refused to conform to the rules, i never wanted to correct the tempo/time signatures/loudness because i felt learning the notes first was more important. i'd isolate those measures and work on them first. i think somewhat i'm right... what good is knowing how to play a piece if the notes aren't readable? i had a lot of trouble reading notes. i really wanted to play piano but it's been really hard up until recently.
i should go back into lessons to have the correct structure on everything. when i hear the kid next door playing piano, i'm so jealous of him! but i also think, people can play piano perfectly but not have any feeling in it. i think although i might play incorrectly, my heart is in it 100%...
i should really know musical terms and things though...

I've played the piano for about 10 years, I think. But I stopped taking lessons. So now it's just something I...know how to play...
I've played violin for 7 years. I've been taking lessons for all of those years. Never self-taught myself, but sometimes I like to sight read some of the later songs in my books. I have no idea how the "level" system works, but I'll tell you that I'm about halfway through Suzuki book 5, can play most 3-octave scales, and can shift up to 8th position. I think I might get a major in music and play as a profession...
I can also kind of play the harmonica, sort of play the guitar, and I can play those plastic recorders that you play in 3rd grade music class.

I also play Oboe (abt 1/2 year now)... I don't play it much though.
Theory isn't a struggle for me.... My Instructor doesn't really like me getting ahead of everyone in that part... :heh:...

I've played the guitar for a total of three and a half years, and I've taken from the same teacher ever since I started playing. ^^; His name is Dave, and I know that he used to be in an extremely popular local band when he was younger. He has his own book (similar to the mel bay series, but yet completely different. o.o) coming out soon, and has been the best teacher ever. ^^ And I don't say that as just a guitar teacher, but he's a great friend too. I've gotten the opportunity to record things at his little recording studio in the back of his music store, as well as be encouraged to write my own music and further my own goals in music. I haven't taken lessons this summer, but I plan on going back once school starts.
I've also played the trumpet in our school band, until I was switched over in sixth grade to the French Horn, which I have to say, even though I like playing it, is one of the suckiest instruments ever invented. XD Although it's only my first year in a new band with veteran horn players (unlike myself), I'm second chair. >> Same for marching band, even though it's my first year in that as well.
Piano... XD oh boy. I was fascinated by the instrument when I was younger, and at the age of 6, I wanted to take lessons. By age four, I had already known all the keys on the piano, and had watched another girl play all the time when I was younger. So yeah. Age of 6, I was started out in the second book of some series... similar to mel bay, but I know that wasn't it. O.o At age ten, I came across the sheet music sites online, and started printed out sheet music, and fell in love with songs I wanted to play badly, even though they were WAY too tough for me. XD So I pushed myself. Age 11, I started writing my own songs, and entitled the first, Wind Sonata, which I still remember how to play to this day. >> I'm currently a freshmen in high school, and the most prominent teacher throughout my piano lessons has taught me about all she can, so I'm now moving on to learn for a teacher from a local College, Mt. Union. I've never really learned any scales, and I think the only reason I've gotten this far in piano was from the talent of extremely fast sight reading. >>; Most of the things on Ichigos here, I've learned and mastered in one day. With the exception of FF's Eternal Harvest, which has remained sitting in my piano bench, collecting dust for that past 2 years. XD I procrastinate. A lot.

I played the piano for about 10 years , I think . My sister's friend (who's my sister age .. 8 years older) first introduced me to the piano . He was pretty good , and I was soon fascinated by the instrument . So eventually my mum let me learn how to play . :D At first it was really fun , and I absolutely loved it . Then after I just got sick of practicing XD . But eventually I got used to it , & it's my favourite instrument . :) I'm still continuing for 1 more year , & then I'll be done all the grades , and I'll finally be able to play only songs I enjoy .
Somewhere back in elementary school , when I first got band class , I learned how to play the trumpet . I was like .. 9 ? But after a year , I still wasn't very accomplished at it . So I just left the instrument .
When I was about 10 , I learned how to play trombone , french horn , & baritone , because I had to play SOMETHING in class . None worked out for me . I wasn't very good at brass instruments :heh:
Eventually I moved to flute , which turned out to be the true calling for me . Other than piano . :P I've been playing that for 5 .. 1/2 ? years . This instrument is more for a fun thing , whereas piano is more serious . I'm probably going to leave the flute after high school . :heh:

Hmm.
Piano, I've been tinkering around with since I was six, but just about 7 months ago, I stopped memorizing songs and got serious. I'm almost done with Grade 2, but I stilllll don't have a teacher.
Guitar, haha, I suck at it. I started lessons about two years ago, and stopped after a month because my teacher just stopped showing up. I taught myself a little bit, and I play what I know.
I played recorder for about six months and knew quite a lot, but forgot most of it.
I attempted saxophone for two weeks and gave up, since the general message from my teacher at school was, "These people are good, you suck. Goodbye."
I played violin for six months in elementary school, and still suck at it.
And now I might just be learning clarinet from my sister, since she's pretty good at it.
Phew.

Piano 10 months- level-um. I'm self taught and I can play Eternal Harvest and some of Chopins Polonaises (Fantasie imaproptu @_@)
Trumpet almost a year-level- I have no clue :S Best trumpet in my school band and my highest note i the 4th ledger line g so whatever level that puts me at (I can't just run that up in a song :O Like play an entire song that high.)
Sorry for the runons,My head hurts and I'm going to a dance hoping that my friend Elizabeth will be there and :S.
EDIT She wasn't,it was so horribly annoying, and the music was bad wish I wouldn't have gone.
