What are your thoughts on it? Should people in a permanent vegetative state be put down? I believe it's a very serious issue, and I'm not quite sure what to think.

well it depends on their chances of coming out of it to me. If it is in their better interest then yes, but over all i'm against it. Does that make any sense?

only if it was in their wishes before they went vegatable, such as a wil, final testament, etc.

if someone wants to die and there is no way you or any kind of counsellor or whatever can talk them out of it then i think it's right to help them if they cant do it themselves.

Anybody here familiar with the Terri Shiavo (sp?) case?

oh yep, i know roughly about the terri schiavo case (i think it's spelt that way).

hmm, i think if there's no hope of the person ever waking up, then it's no use keeping his/her body alive for the sake of hanging on. It's not very emotionally healthy for the people who are close to him/her. Got to learn to let go.

its a very diffucult subject, and should really be up to the family. i'm not trying to be funny, except there is no need to go to court over it, make a majority vote (i am being serious here)

i think if the person wanted to die, then yes. if there was no decision made, the family should choose.

Think about this first :Would YOU want to live a life of little or no feelings, only to be cared for and have no real point to live? Intensive care cost alot of maney, and there is little chance of the person to get out of that state. Life is presious and must be tooken care of, but in that kind of case, it is like a body with no urge to do somthing. Almost everything in Terri Schiavo's body must be taken care of by somthing else but herself, and I dont think she wanted to life that kind of life. Durring the autopsy, they found out she had ereversable [spelling..?] brain damage. So there would be no point to linger on a false hope.

I would rather die then life in that state. If I can do no good to others that way, theres no point to live, other then taking money out of my families pockets just so the hospital can feed me and keep me on the brink of life and death.

Another question to ask is whether you agree with the "quality of life" or the "sanctity of life" views. In vet med, the quality of life argument supports the euthanasia of animals. However in human medicine it is the sanctity of life view that makes human euthanasia so controversial. I believe that the decision to euthanasize is very personal. There are too many factors involved in this type of situation and I do not think that there can be only one view.

Noooo... I had to do an essay on this. It annoyed me to no end. :bleh:

That being said: I think it all comes down to choice. If the patient is lucid and wishes to commit suicide... well... I mean... it's not really any of your business, is it? That's my view on many things, from religion and gay marriages to the best brand of cereal in America. :P

If the patient is not lucid, and has left no written testimony, then obviously the issue is not so easy to resolve. However, it is my personal opinion that someone's spouse usually knows what the patient wanted. That seems a good rule of thumb to me. I don't think that people should be forced to stay alive with only a one in a million chance that they may come out of the coma... I mean... there was actually one woman who went into a coma when she was like five, and woke up twenty years later. That would suck.

I think that people should tell family members if they want to be kept alive before an accident leaves them in this vegetative state if it ever happens. i personally would not want to be kept alive in a vegetative state, so if it ever happens, tell them to shut me down.

What about when it is finally decided to kill the person. With the whole terri schiavo thing they killed over during a process that took weeks! Animals die easier deaths. Why do they have to starve the person when it can be done quick and with only a small time of pain with a bullet or something like that. If your going to kill someone does if have to be so cruelly done when there are better methods(not to sound like i enjoy killings but i think you will all understand what i mean.)
