What is your favourite key when composing? There are some scientific explanations why certain key signatures affect in different ways.. but that's for some other time :)
My favourite minor key is D-minor, followed by C-minor.
My favourite major key is F-major, followed by Eb major

Hmm...
My favorite key is E minor for composing... I just like the way it sounds... Dark, but not too dark...
My favorite key for playing in... I don't really have a favorite there...

I love playing in Bflat major, it sounds so nice. I also find GMajor fun to play in, mainly becuase the f sharp is just so cool to play as the not before the tonic.
A minor rocks my socks, I adore and love it. But C minor is also really nice.

When composing:
My favourite minor key is E-minor, followed by C-minor.
My favourite major key is Eb-major, followed by Bb-major.
Sometimes the second-placed ones change a bit. :heh:

To be perfectly honest, I like pieces which are free in their tonality, as in many post-romantic compositions; Debussy presents some excellent examples of this, and for that reason, he is my favorite deceased composer.
But for when I'm composing...
Major Keys: A and Db
Minor Keys: F# and Bb
Yeah, I know... those are relative, and that's not really creative, but they do sound pretty!

I think there's an article in the Compositions Tutorial concerning the choice of keys, hehe . .
Er, I like to compose in simple keys. C major is a favourite, because I can quickly figure out the chord progressions. A minor is also a favourite for that reason. A few sharps and a few flats don't bother me, so I'm also fond of G major, F major, E minor, and D minor. Because of the sounds, I wouldn't mind working with D flat major/C sharp minor or A flat, but yeah, too many accidentals for my head :heh:

I don't really consider the keys outside of their relative relations. Usually, I just make it one way or another for technical simplicity (ie, key with lots of sharps for easier string playing, key with flats for easier wind playing). However, I do enjoy using augmented chords quite a bit (and seventh chords of all varieties).

I like C Minor, or just the basic chromatic scale (gives such a sense of panic!).

My favourite major keys are A flat major and E Major, and as for minor, I like D or G Minor.

If it matters, when I composer a jazz piece, D0major works wonders for me, I compose some really catchy stuff...the accidentals are so COMFORTABLE...

Wow. Awesome topic. =D
My absolute, undisputed favorite key for composing and listening or whatever the heck is A Major. I adore A Major. :bigsmile: I think it's the king of all keys. Everything in it, no matter what, is just gorgeous and so heavenly. *_*
So, on the opposite side, my favorite minor key is F Sharp Minor (which is just the minor version of A Major :P ). It sounds so mournful and sad.
Weird thing about me, whenever I think of a tune, it ends up being in relatively simple keys--usually F Major/D Minor, G Major/E Minor, and C Minor. = \
But, yeah. That's me.

Why A minor, of course :bleh: (pretends to be original)

Hmm..That depends on the kind of song I'm working on.

I don't really have a favorite key. If I randomly hum a melody for a composition, that's the key it's gonna be!
But I do have a favorite chord. Can we post that here too? I like F6(-9) because of "Bleach - Going Home" :D

I'm starting to find my overall favorite key is D minor to compose it. Most of my sketches are in that key, at least. Eb and Ab major and F# minor are also pretty cool, though with my level of skill, I find them rather demanding. G major isn't too bad, either.

When I'm at my piano, I come up with melodies using C+ mostly or A- just cause its easy to play around with but when I write them down, it's usually w/e I hear that I think sounds better:heh:

I think I was like that.
Now that I am getting better at Piano, and getting into harder stuff (or just REGULAR Chopin) I am needing to improvise and compoe comfortably in signatures like F# Major and Gb Major as well.

Now that I understand music more, I kind of feel that every key convey a different 'colour', so yeah, it really depends on what style of music I compose. ;)

Well, C Minor is still my favourite, but I'm starting to love E Minor, and D Major/B Minor. And when I want to make something sinister-sounding, I can usually interpret tunes in my head visually better in D Minor than in most scales. :blink: Haha. I'm weird that way.
Still, I can't help but love C Minor. :P

^ Agreed
Anyway.. It's weird but I think of it this way:
Gminor = Desperate
Cminor = Mourning
Dminor = Fantasy

G minor for me is fury.
D minor is melancholy/intriguing.
I write in C# minor when I'm ambitious.

My first (and only) great composition was in G minor and I like that key. But I like D, A and E Major too. When I compose, I don't choose my key... because I almost don't compose. E minor is a key I use a lot... My last composition was in E MinJoR.
When I'm listening music, I like Gundam Wing's key... Have you listened to it? It's Dm and D all the time!

I know a guy who chooses the key based on whatever pops into his head. For instance, if he's humming a melody, and he happens to discover it's in F# minor, then he'll use that key.

I dont compose but I like to play songs in Gm, Bmin and C. C I find is the most versitile because you can just put accidentals (lol XD)

@Al: I didn't talk about it. I didn't know this thread before that post.
I just made a song with something that appeared in my head... but I forgot it.
