Have you ever tried making a video game or computer game on your own?
I think it'd be really entertaining, but very difficult to learn all the programming, etc. I think I'd be good at coming up with storylines, and it'd be fun to see the little sprites in action when the game is complete, but I just don't have that kind of programming knowledge. :(

On a side note, I've found this REALLY cool website with programs for how to make video games! I'm going to ask for some of this stuff for x-mas. :) Someone could really spend a lot on that website!

^_^ Hehe, I made a computer game once. It was really bad, because I didn't know what I was doing! I think the program I used was called "Klik 'n Play", or something like that. It was designed for use in schools by kids, so it was only powerful enough to make simple 2D stuff. I was thankful that it did most of the work for me (eg. cartoon graphics were provided), and that it was easy to understand and use.

I had made up a short original mystery similar to the adventures of Sherlock Holmes (my favourite at that time). The two main characters, Romeo (from Romeo and Juliet) and Exes (some guy in a hockey mask), were both provided by the program. And in each platform level, they'd have different powers (mostly the standard shooting-a-fireball-from-the-hands technique). After you beat the insanely hard boss of that level, you'd be taken to a screen where you had to read the story in order to pick up clues. The player wasn't allowed to skip the story, because you had to press a key that corresponds with the story. For example, if a passage in the story says, "Exes entered the room", you probably have to hit "enter" on your keyboard to move on to the next level. Cruel, wasn't I? XD

I even did a homage to Super Mario Bros. in a side-scrolling level (though I had to substitute a T-Rex for Bowser, hehe). I found a midi to provide music from the very first game, and I even made those boxes with the question marks. There were three types, and each one gave you a different fireball to use. Each enemy responded differently to the fireball, so you had to use the right one to get by.

 the memories! *makes a mental note to find the game* The funny thing was that I could never beat my own game! :heh:

I want to learn to program games as a back-up plan for optometry and/or composing RPG music...

I've made a game once before too. I used RPGmaker2003. It is actually quite professional, the graphics are almost exact as the one in FFVI. But now I put all that behind me, and now I try focusing on composing for games instead. :) go figure. ^_^

its too hard to create a good game out of nothing, we usualy end up creating crap ones, use game-making tools, or end up modifying existing ones..

i've written a text-based war simulation game using basic once.. took months to write, took seconds to find bugs. since then i've stopped until i get a degree in programming

I used RPGMaker 2000 once, it's nothing professional, it's really a great tool for beginners though.

If the resolution was a bit higher I'd consider using it ~

I also created a game once in DarkBasic, in which you had to shoot birds from the sky. The gun images were ripped from Doom, and the birds were something I made in paint. They looked bad. When you'd fire the gun the birds would stop moving, so I made it as if they were shocked for a moment from the shot or so. Another limitation like that caused me to make the birds explode once you hit them :heh:

I don't have it anymore... I could possibly recreate it, it was like one afternoon of work.

(the cars were little block with random colors... moves up, down, left, right, programed walls.. basically going in a circle...)
