Hi everyone! :) since everyone seems to introduce himself first in their new composition threads, I’ll do so as well :heh:
I’m 16 years old and started composing around June last year (2004). I looked for a midi program, because I wanted to see the sheets of a nice midi-file I listened to. Well, I fooled around with the program a little and soon grew quite fond of composing. Since then, I’ve been mainly composing piano solos and still am, recently I’ve started to work on more pieces with several instruments though (but my Finale stopped working -.-).
I hope I’ll be able to compose music for RPGs, Movies or just publish my own works someday.
About my compositions… My main musical inspiration would probably be Yuki Kajiura and Jim Brickman, but I listen to so many different composers all day, so there are probably some other artists influencing my style. :hey:
Ah, one more thing. I suck at music theory :P I’m working hard to improve my knowledge of it though. :)
Here is a list of some of my better songs:
P.S: I marked my favorites -> "*"

My favorite so far is your improvosation. I've only listened to a few...the only thing I have to say is that on a couple of them, while I was listening, I felt like the melody had suddenly been cut off and then been forced to start over.

Wonderful collection of works there, Matthias. :) Candle Light is still as charmingly simple as ever.

could you give me an example please? I need to know those kind of things in order to improve myself.

I liked the "improvisation" best. It was differnet from the other ones. The other ones sounded kind of ´all the same´.
Matt
August 3rd, 2005, 04:30 pm
Sorry, I don't quite get what you mean by 'all the same'. Well, most of them may be recorded with the same instrument (piano) and, of course, have some similiarities, after all I have my own style, but still, I don't think some of them sound even the least bit similar to each other (ie One fine Day - Sara's Theme and especially my "other" songs (Transient Moment, Walking in the Moonlight, Medieval No.1)). :hey:
As for the 2 Movements of my Winter Suit, they're intended to sound alike.
PS: I forgot to add this song XD

Well It was pretty late when I heard these song, maybe I couldn´t hear so well. But I sure still like the improvisation the most.

Winter Suit
I like the whole idea of this, and I kind of hoped that there would be more variation between the two movements. You should keep similiarities in the melody line, but use different tempos or rhythms. I liked the first movement more, it really portrayed its title.

Hey, the last song was really good - it's pretty simple, but portrays the mood almost perfectly (just add a bit more dynamic reverb/echo effects ;)). Did you record this playing through a MIDI keyboard? The performance is certainly nice, though there's a few 'hiccups' (probably sudden pedal transitions, or maybe polyphony limits) here and there, which you might want to fix by hand. Still, the instrument choice, melody line, and chords really work very well together to evoke that feeling of a lonely stroll in the night. Great job.

Walking down the half-lit Street
*soaks up the e-piano sound* What a pleasing beginning. The block chords are positioned to perfection and played subtly to do no more than support the theme. The transition about 50 seconds in is very much to my liking. Those leaps in the melodic line are great. I know I've heard this one before, but never completed or named. My only issue with it? It ends too soon! :( However, with how short is, you sure managed to make it evoke the image in the title. It has a sort of gloomy/dreamy/foggy feeling about it. One of my favorite pieces of yours, Matthias. Very well done. :)

I think I know what Blombrink meant earlier, that they sounded the same. It might be because you use the same key signature on many of your compositions. I noticed you use Eminor alot, and also Aminor. Some of the compositions do sound the same, because of the style you use. They are very predictable, and *too* easy to follow. Simplistic songs are good, but not if they get too simple. A good composition should sound difficult, but be easy to play.

aww, sorry for the late reply. I didn't check Ichigo's for the past few days @_@
@Spc1st
Thanks for your great compliment! :O
Yeah, I recorded it using my e. piano and those 'hiccups' are probably caused by my bad pedal usage  I'll think about re-recording it, but I want to finish my other new songs first (including my CMA song).
@Gnomish
Thanks for always commenting my songs James. :) You might not remember it, but you were the one who inspired me to use this title :P
@Noir
I'm still working on more songs for the winter suit, my CMA song is also one of them. Hope you'll like it.
Well, think I got what Bloombrink meant now :/ I compose a lot minor songs using mostly E and A minor. That's most likely also why my "Improvisation" sounds different, because it's in F minor. I'll try to use a larger variety of keysignatures in the future. Thanks for your hints :)

Yes, I just listened to that last one, and it is very sweet. It didn't exactly scream winter to me, but it was one of the nice piano solos, definitely!

Walking Down the Half-Lit Street:
Yeah this is NOT a piano solo! I really like the simplicity and subduedness in this piece. It sounds like some kind of music box song...

*blows up a whole lot of dust*
It's time to revive this ol' thread of mine *cough* @_@
well, after long absence (understatement?!) I've finally returned and spend an even longer time digging up this thread... (page 6?) x_x
Anyway, I've not been idling all year long and improved quite a bit :)
Song:
- Longing for Love (piano solo)
I wrote this one about... more than one year ago? But it greatly influenced my later works for piano, especially the tendency to use a lot of d-minor
- Adagio in d-moll (piano solo)
This one is 6 months old. I like the "elegant" feeling of this song
- Phantasy Impromptu No.1 (piano solo)
My longest piece! And my most recent (finished) piano solo, I first wanted to turn it into a Sonata, but I got carried away :heh:
- Fantasie in F
It's for piano, cello and flute. I wrote it on my 17th birthday 8 months ago.. it's rare for me to finish a piece in one rush.
- Morgennebel (german for morning haze)
"Saturday, 26. November 2005, 15:00:12" quoth the doc-file and though I shalt believe it...
It was my first composition for... well, more than a few instruments.
Oboe Trio, Flute, English Horn, Piano, Harp, Strings (only Violin, Cello and Contrabass).
Comments are welcome :heh:

sorry for doubleposting :scream:
- String Quartet in d-minor
Yay! My first piece for the complete string orchestra! It's a first for me experience-wise, but it turned out quite well, still way too short, but take it is a preview, I'll continue to work on it :)
As the title states, it's for 1st Violin (divisi a 2 equally strong groups, playing the same theme most of the time though), 2nd Violin, Viola, Cello and Contrabass.

All I have to say is that I like them a lot. A lot, a lot.
Nothing seems too offensieve to give a predict critique, other than STOP USUING D MINOR FOR A BIT. :P

Heh, welcome back to Ichigos~! :D I think I've heard all your pieces except for your Adagio, but I'll comment on your orchestral ones, as I like orchestrating and whatnot. XD For your Morgennebel, it kind of surprised me when you said it was for such a small chamber group, because it sounded really full and warm, and this effect is usually achieved by a bigger ensemble, but you managed it quite well, so I really liked it. I also liked the atmosphere you set up with the oboe (w00t, finally someone who appreciates and uses oboe properly). Although, for the higher string ensemble, I'd suggest you to give is some more melodic elements as it seems to not do much other than long notes. Finally, for the ending, I suggest you to make it not end with just the oboe, but rather let all the instruments play and let them off one by one so it would sound more 'complete' in a sense. ;) As for your String Quartet, like I stated on msn, it was wonderfully crafted throughout, due to your use of thematic motifs, call and response technique and balance between background, middleground and foreground elements. But the only concern I have (like I stated before on msn), is the pizzicato entrance, it kind of appeared too 'unnoticedly' and then started meshing with your other arco elements, so give it some sense of direction, and it's going to be great! ^.^ Keep up the wonderful job~!;)

hey FeelTheMusic, thanks for your nice comment! .__. I don't have any contact with fellow composers here in Germany (unfortunately! ;_; ), so it's really hard to tell. I think the standard of music in Germany is rather high though (take all the test you need to pass to enrol at music univerisity etc). As for me, since it's not very common for young people to like this sort of music and to start composing in general, a lot of people (my piano teacher for instance) tell me that I'm very talented, though since there are no others to compare to (at least not in my surroundings)... aww I dunno. I guess I have some talent, but I'm not extraordinary. Sometimes it takes me months to finish a piece and sometimes I don't finish them at all. :/

Reminds me of the piano solos in the Corpse Bride. I like your modulations. They are so interesting and smooth! Sometimes when you slow down the harmonic rhythm, it gets a little annoying because of the way your melody is set up, so be careful of that.

Hey, I've heard that little guitar tune once before :) You have a nice little beginning there with some nicely chosen chords. A male voice would accompany the rest of the song perfectly, although that's hard to find...
I'd fill out the "I wish I'd met you sooner" more with string instruments, either solo or accompaniment.
Matt

*bump*! Thank you Noir. For me it would probably be even harder to write lyrics than finding someone to sing them... :/
Anyway, here's an old song of mine which I pretty much finished now. I wanted to write something "bouncy". The ending is only for as long as I can't think of something better, which means that it will probably stay this way for all eternity.
Enjoy! =)
Milchh
May 26th, 2007, 05:54 pm
Yeah, you succeed in the 'bouncy' there bud. ^_^ I like it, although some chords are a little uneasy me thinks; might wanna work some of them out, like the strings' fills. The piano solo is just a TAD random, but the end the solo works out well, and I love the change to the slow part, so bring in some chromatic strings to a new key and theme, or variate. ^_^
Gnomish
May 26th, 2007, 09:23 pm
Mischievous Journey
Good choice with giving the melody to a flute. It suits the "Mischievous" part of the title pretty well, and "bouncy" is a good term to dub this. Also, interesting modulatory chords pulling away from D minor from about 0:14 onward. I also like the trills. However, this piece might benefit from making the flute's initial melody a bit longer before it begins the modulatory passage. The introduction of strings was unexpected, and they seemed to fall off a cliff at 0:47 -- definitely not like anything I've heard before. It gives the piece more character, even if it is a little random.
Once the flute comes back, the piece seems to regain some of the mood it brought forth at the beginning. When the piano snags the solo spotlight though, it begins to sound even more random. It would be perfect if the flute were to go on with the melody for just a bit longer before dropping out once again, as that would likely make its melody a little more memorable.
As far as the ending is concerned, I'm intrigued by the final chord. Is it an unresolved sus chord? Did you end on a IV? It's hard for me to figure it out. :P This chord makes doesn't quite seem to bear enough strength to make the piece sound final to me.
SilverHawk
May 27th, 2007, 07:02 pm
You really wrote a great melody here! It fits perfectly with the title, and it captures the mood very well. Most of my comments are basically what Gnomish said, with one exception. I don't really think the piano solo sounds that random - I think the fact that the accompaniment remains largely the same keeps the piano solo fitting in with everything else.
For the ending, finishing on (what I think is) the IV chord doesn't quite make it feel complete, as Gnomish mentioned. It sounds like you're about to go into a powerful V chord, followed by the final I chord of the piece, but ending on the IV left me hanging.
Great work though - I really enjoyed listening to it, and I hope that I'll hear more of your work.
ajamesu
May 29th, 2007, 03:39 am
I agree with a lot of the comments said, but I don't think the piano solo was random at all. Also, when the strings stop at 0:47, you could have them switch to harmony and then have them fade away from there to make its disappearance more refined. I actually liked the ending chord, it kind of fit with the title, tricking you into thinking it was the end and stuff, it was cool, well written :)

*revives the thread* I haven't been as active a composer as I should have been over the last... 2 years? But I've written a couple of songs and I hope you'll like them. Comments are of course highly appreciated.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, "Spring" is the oldest of the three. It's from early 2007 I think, the others are both songs from 2008. "Ballade" I wrote in Summer, the "Autumn Song" in Autumn (my latest piece).

Welcome back!!! I missed hearing your beautiful piano solos ^_^ I remember listening to Spring, I still have it on my mp3 player as "Christmas." By the way, I didn't get a chance to ask you if it was okay that I used a snippet of your piece in a mid-2007 video project, I'm sorry I did so without permission.

I love how the melodies were all related in Spring and Autumn. Such beautifully expressive new-age style works! *sigh* What model piano did you record these on?

Thanks ajamesu! I'm glad to be back and I'll try to be more active from now on. :)
Yeah, I changed the name of the song for a recital I gave in spring. So... spring. It's more appropriate anyway. :x
By the way, I didn't get a chance to ask you if it was okay that I used a snippet of your piece in a mid-2007 video project, I'm sorry I did so without permission.I don't mind, just hope you mentioned me in the credits so that my fame will spread throughout the world (or something). ._.
I'm glad that you seem to like the style of my piano music, sometimes I tend to be too simplistic and forget to introduce new harmonic devices throughout the piece (for heaven's sake, it's like I'm magically attracted to the tonic if I dare to wander off of standard chords for just a second). Anyway, the piano model I use is the Yamaha P-120 electric piano, directly connected to my sound card via line-in/out. I'm not sure why there's background noise in my newest song, I'll have to check it out, but normally it works beautifully for audio recording. If you check out the videos of Kyle Landry on youtube you can take a look at the piano, he uses the same model I use (just that he has a lot more skill).
Note: Two of my wisdom teeth were removed today... For now I'll return to my ice-on-the-cheek state of self-pitying suffering... I'll be active again soon. T_T

Ouch, How it feel? =P I remember when they removed me four wisdom teeth that I was like 1 month sore. And I think what left me feeling pain was the 8 needles they put in my mouth, lol.
