Okay, so I was utterly bored yesterday, and after my philosophical-thought-of-the-day I decided to challenge myself and compose a *drum roll* woodwind quartet! As I started out, I immediately noticed how the sound got more and more "quirky"- in a sense. So I embraced it (the quirkiness, ofc) and here's the result. I compare the four parts (flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon) to four children playing around, occasionally arguing, and well.. just being full of energy!

Oh, and when I was finished, I noticed how I used a bazillion different keys! It starts out in an innocent C-major, ending in a tired and content B-major.

Nice song. You really captured what you said about the kids playing I pretty much pictured exactly that. I also liked that little part at 0:54(just a special part i liked ^_^). I dont know about the quirky factor. I cant really remember what quirky means :heh: ill go to dictionary.com later.

I agree that it is very quirky. It has these strange, very modern techniques, and yet it reminds me of some Renaissance music that I've hear, and it also has some Romantic instrumentation. I wish some of the themes in each section would be expanded a bit more, maybe even to outline each of the separate siblings involved.

Have you ever thought about publication?

Some of these are quite exceptional. I like "The Quirky Siblings". If you don't mind my asking, how long have you been writing?

I publish some of my arrangements (which are much better than my compositions I assure you lol) through lulu.com (its free)

It sounds Baroque/Classicalish in a way. Lots of key signature changes, but all used very logically, in my opinion.

I'm not going to comment in further detail, for my own good. -_-

How so? ;__;

Anyway, I've attached the score to this post if anyone were to become curious of... things.

How so? ;__;

Oh, it's just that I figured out that I go into orchestration details a bit much, which I figured out today was the source of my lack of quality on my compositions. :heh: + there's a long story behind it.

Or, if you meant the Baroque/Classicalish thing: the intro really made me think that this was a Classical piece. Meas. 19-28 really got me thinking that way too. But it's just my personal opinion; others may say different things. It's probably the mordents, and trills (especially how you used the trills).

Here's another composition. I wrote this as an interpretation of an artist's picture (One that was used in the competition this month).

Golden Mellow (MP3) (http://www.soundclick.com/util/downloadSong.cfm?ID=5582834&key=9704DBEB-6)

Painting (http://forums.ichigos.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5470&d=1183818394) (The dog one, not the others)

Backstory & Interpretation
A lonely bum in New York City befriends a puppy dog, which he named Mellow. Eventually, the two of them build up a strong friendship, and the dog and the bum live their way through the rough New York, year after year. Mellow even helped the bum getting food on a daily basis, no sausage vendor in the whole of NYC could ever resist the dog's pleading eyes! Then they sat there, man and dog, and shared the sausage.

As the years passed by though, the dog grew increasingly old and ill. When autumn finally arrived, old Mellow died. The bum is left alone, grieving his old companion. Even though the sorrow and anger did lead to acceptance, the old bum couldn't help but feel miserable and left-alone. On the rare occasions when the bum could actually get a hold of any food, he always walked down the park to split it, laying the other half on Mellow's burial site by the pond, sharing it with his late companion.

Eventually his own days counted down to a final, and the two of them finally meet up in Heaven. There they now walk amongst all departed, human and canine alike.

About the Quirky Siblings...

Let me say this. If I was playing that song, and I had to change Key so often, I would be very upset.

As would most musicians - regardless of their instrument of choice.

Some people here composed for church organs as of late. I gave it a shot and here it is so far (Haven't yet decided how to continue on it):

Hahaha, inspired you did I? I really like it, especially the chord progression. It definitely seemed cinematic. Why did you call it opium, though :P?

Wow. That was great. But, I think your treating the organ a little to much like the piano. Yes, they are similar, but they are still completely different.

I did love the song though.

I love it. There isn't much to say about it, but I can definately appreciate it; love the melodic bass. ;)

It dawned on me today Noir. Your works are similar in nature to Gavin Greenaway. If you haven't heard of him, take a listen to some of his works, namely his "Tapestry of Nations" he wrote for Disney's Millennium celebration. Get in touch with me if you would like to hear it. I think you would enjoy it.

Keep up your work. I really enjoy it (and envy it)!

What happened with your Opium, Noir7? Did you stop of produce Opium? :O

Nah, Really did you finish it or left it there?

Apart from the contest piece which I have been working on lately, here's a short (and forgotten) piece which I thought I'd post here. It's called "The Dice Player"

At the section from :24 to :34 it would be cool if you could change those bass notes so that they add some more interesting rhythmic elements to fit the mood you have going. Actually, it would even sound better if you just took out the higher note in between the bass notes so that it would be just the low bass note playing in the same rhythm that it already is (does that make any sense at all?!?!).

I thought I might as well re-upload some pieces. My new compositions I can't really upload yet due to copyright reasons... but here are some old ones from a long, forgotten time when youth streamed through my body!

Re-attached.

Ah finally I get a chance to listen to your 'happy birthday'. I liked how you change the atmosphere of it. I still can't believe someone had the copyright of happy birthday for many years and being used by hundred of people.

Anyway, each of these pieces is enjoyable to listen again. My favorite is Golden Mellow and Angelic. I hope in a future you are allowed to post anything of your recent music. Will be nice and interesting to listen to your progress. -_^

Wow you are a fantastic composer! Every piece is crafted with a lot of attention to detail. My favorites were Golden Mellow, and Opium. You arrangement of Happy Birthday was very good as well. It was interesting to hear Happy Birthday play with such a melancholy tone. Just two quick questions: How did you record you pieces, and how long does it typically take you to compose a piece?

I've always loved Life and Death. It's just so cool sounding! Especially the piano in the beginning...I don't know why, it just touches me.
And I hope you have a happier birthday tomorrow than your arrangement of the song. :P

LOVE the piano solo in Angelic, and Golden Mellow is so mellifluous and powerful. *drools* I liked Crappy Birthday as well :P I don't know if you were looking for feedback, but for Opium, I felt that the organ part at the end could be given to/doubled with the violins to give it more oomph. And Quirky Siblings felt too calming to feel quirky, I imagine more of a nursery with infants, or maybe toddlers crawling around.

Mmm, I agree with Nyu, I would like to see some recent work too.

Astounding work, and happy birthday :)

@umshfmodec: It really depends on the piece... but in a way you could say that it took about 7 years to compose ;)

Hey guys *dusts off thread* *cough*
I found a 3-year old song which I decided to post. Don't think I've posted it before, and it had completely slipped my own memory as well, haha. There's a passage towards the end which sounds like something from the Lion King, as well as an off-topic note at the very end which the rhodes piano didn't really figure out how to play.

The sound is really low for some reason so volume-up.

Hey nice to see you around again!

I liked the use of playing off beat. I really liked how you opened up with that G#m7(#5)/E (?) in the left hand instead of plain old E Major. I also like how in measure 14 and measure 45 you switched things up from that G#/C to the Adim/C. I didn't like that little diddy at the end of measure 18 and the beginning of 19. It felt as if it interrupted the flow of the phrase. Maybe its because of how full it is or that fermata on that C#min chord. It also felt a little awkward on the + of 2 in measure 33 to me. One final thing that really stuck out to me was the end when you started that little run thing and suggested an EMaj7. It works, but it didn't at first work for me when I first listened through.

I liked it. :) Can we expect anymore anytime soon?

I personally think that root position dominant chord in mm 3 comes off too strong. Maybe try d#dim7/c# instead? In measure 14, I feel like adding that voice in the top register seems to be a little pointless to me if you don't continue it for at least a little while, so maybe play around with that. I agree with Porsche that 18 and 19 are problematic, but I think it's because you have the close spacing in the bottom voices, and therefore it suddenly seems very bottom-heavy. Part of that may be the instrument that you're using, but in any case, it definitely doesn't sound as clean as much of the rest of your piece. In measure 49 I feel the arpeggiation might work better if you went b, e, d, a#, etc. Also, what was the purpose behind your rather odd ending? I still haven't decided whether I like it or not, but it might help if I understood it better.

Overall, very nice, clean-sounding piece. I'm trying to decide what it reminds me of, though...

A wonderfully simple start and very followable. An atmosphere is created very effectively and I felt it encompassed me with warmth. I disagreed with the transition around 0:46~0:58ish. The harmony to 0:54~0:55 especially. The melody didn't really flow at the section that followed either~to me. Mainly the small bridges leading back and connecting to new melodic themes. The way you ended works but I would have still preferred the final note to be on the tonic as a chord. It just feels more natural to me for a piece such as this one. Whats rhodes piano? I'm guessing that wasn't intentional then?

Any new works recently? I haven't seen you on the thread for the longest time. Hoping to see more from you soon!

Whats rhodes piano?

It's a type of electric keyboard invented by Harold Rhodes and produced in mass by the company that builds Fender Guitars. more info (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodes_piano)

For some reasons this song makes me think of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata [First Movement] and something from the anime series Hellsing. It got a mysterious mood, in special with that use of reverb. Really well done man.

I am impressed with all I am hearing so far at Ichigo's since last time I took a look! Compositional quality!

Yeah, I agree. This is really well-produced. I also agree that the quality of music on Ichigo's continues to advance. It's getting scary how good some of the compositions are on here.
