View Full Version : The "Dual Composer Composition" Thread

This thread is where 2 people compose the same song. You either make up a melody, and someone else makes up the chord changes. Or you make up the chord changes, and someone else makes up the melody.

For example, aoiryuukishi13 gave me one of his compositions. It was just the melody. Then I added chord changes, a bass line, and a drum pattern to spice it up. See the before and after attachments.

And so we made a composition! aoiryuukishi13 and I would also like feedback on the final version of “Life of a Ninja” also.

Nice idea does everyone post in this with their dual compositions or is it just you?
I Liked it at times. The slow downs seemed a bit off(the melody not the tempo on SOME parts)
But I like When it picked up. Over all it was nice how you put it together :)

yeah
anyone who would like to participate can do so as well, and we appreciate your feedback.

So basically it's a work of collaboration to make one piece? Or are two people supposed to compose similiar pieces, one being sort of a remix/arrangement of the other?

The piece itself is kinda neat, too, though in my opinion it's really screaming for some overdrive guitars. Would you mind if I added some, or is it only two people per composition?

We should lay down some rules then since more people like to participate in this.

Here’s an example. Suppose aoiryuukishi13 composed the chord changes for a particular song (let’s called it “Song 1”). The problem is he couldn’t think up a melody for it. So he posts it in this thread to see if anyone wants to help. If someone (let’s call him Bob) does want to help him out with the melody, Bob must have permission to do so by the original composer (i.e. aoiryuukishi13 in this case). If aoiryuukishi13 likes the melody that Bob made, then they both are the composers of “Song 1.” If another person wants to join (let’s call her Sue) it is up to the party (in this case aoiryuukishi13 and Bob). Both Bob and aoiryuukishi13 must both agree that Sue can join in on it. There is no limit how many people can join in on a particular song, it’s just that each member in the party must all agree.

Then later aoiryuukishi13 composed an entirely different new song (let’s called it “Song 2”). He composed a melody, but there are no chord changes. Someone wants to help out with the chord changes (let’s call him Dan). aoiryuukishi13 agrees and a new party is made, which consist of aoiryuukishi13 and Dan. At this point Bob and Sue aren’t part of this party for “Song 2.”

ANYONE can post his or her work (be it only a melody, or only the chord changes), and ANYONE can help. It isn’t just me.

Critiques and feedback on compositions are still appreciated.

I see. So this is a place to dump unfinished musical ideas, in hope that someone will find some use in them :P? In that case, I have a ton of them to spare, but I'll start off with this simple one - if anyone wants to make something more out of it, it's there for you to use and abuse ;).

okay
umm
spc1st, You have my permission to add in one (or two) overdrive guitars.

Oh, and i have to add in to the rules... the first thing should be that altering approvals should be done SEPARATELY by all the parties involved, meaning that one person can't say "____ approved"

*altering approvals= approvals required for altering someone's work.*

Ok I added some stuff to it. I kind of messed around and added a drum pattern, a bass line, and added more stuff in the middle. Let's see what you think.

Hey, this pretty nice - I especially liked that little extra section that you've added near the end. Overall, the mixing could be a bit better, particulary for the lower piano notes (maybe double it with something, or just knock up the velocities a bit), but for the time that was spent on it, I'm pretty impressed.

A suggestion for future entries, however, is it possible for you to post the edited versions in MIDI? A lot of the composers here don't have access to audio multi-track editors, and it would be hard for them to follow up if they decided to work on it (ie, they probably have to resequence everything, and it'll likely turn out a lot different). The final version can be recorded in audio, though (after making sure that no one wants to work on it further).

Alright, here's a progress update on the "Life of a Ninja" piece - this one's sorta the abridged version, since I basically ripped out the last few reptead sections which were unedited and slapped on an ending. The transitions need some work, yes, but overall it's pretty good I think - props to gedtag for that nice guitar solo section. The recording isn't that great, but I was content enough that I actually got it to work the first time (considering that the later parts are so very busy, which my computer no likes).

Silver Wyvern is letting me "mess around" with battle.mid. Well then here is what I did to it.

Heh, when the drums came in, it kind of sounded like music from some of the more recent "007" Movies.

I like the drums you added to it. I just didn't like the clarinet melody at the end. It was cool to hear the song like that though! ^_^

Maybe someone could ad to this? I know this has quite a bit of potential.(sp?)

I don't know about you guys, but I find this incredibly tight! The piano song was pretty good to begin with, but that bass and drums just knocked it up a notch!!! Well done my friend. I actually like the beginning better than the end, but both are sweet.

Keep up the good work. I have some crappy songs that need some work too, so here they are. Do what you must. Im sorry, their not in midi format, so if you cant do anything, just let me know.

Heh, it would be a whole lot easier to "mess around" with your songs if they were midi.

edit:

The funny thing is, I didn't like the clarinet part that I did either!

This is a very nice tune. But I added some stuff to it also. Pretty much added a drum beat, bass, and I continued the song where the original left off, and then repeated the whole thing.

^.^ I love what you've done with the song, gettag. It's great!

But, would it be possible to make the melody at the beginning alittle louder?

On this peace I have two problems. The first is the fact that it gets really boring and repetative, and the second is that I can't think of anything to continue it with.

Hey, I'm wondering if someone wants to do varations on my new Etude, Petit Etude.

Want to hear someone variate one of my songs, and hear if someone can varie something of mine (if I make it easy to do, or not).

Hey, sorry to revive ANOTHER old thread (well, not THAT old...), but I was wondering if anyone could help me with this song. It's got a lot of potential, but I'm not sure where to take it. As you may notice, there's a large empty space in the middle of it to show you that.
