View Full Version : Hello! These are my compositions!

Well, these are just a few compositions I made a while back with some obscure midi editing software. I now use Finale Printmusic! 2004 for all of my compositions. (Thanks atma!) The first one is called New York because after I made it, I was reminded of a big, bustling city. That is pretty much the only reason! :XD The second song is a sort of islander-sounding song. Originally it was going to be the BGM for a flash animation, until I got mad at my Flash editor and decided I wasn't cut out for Flash! :heh: The third, Detroit, came to me when I was returning from Michigan coming through Detroit. It reminds me of the tense driving of the big city. And the last one, Wideland, was a feeble attempt at country by me... :heh: I don't think it turned out very well... Well, let me know what you think! And don't keep your suggestions to yourselves! I am completely open to any input you may have, and will try my best to incorporate any suggestions into my future pieces!

I listened to all your files and I was very impressed with how each song had a distinct flavour. I haven't taken music theory for a while so I can't give any useful suggestions. I like what I hear and the best thing about your pieces is that they all have a hummable melody, that's something I really like. I like "cha" the best because it reminds me of ocean resorts and warm breezes.

:heh: I see almost similar styles between you and your bro.
These are really catchy songs. There slightly short.
They sound like when you press which style you want on my keyboard.

There's all very good, but I didn't like the "Detroit" song, everything sounded detuned. x_x I'd suggest some more harmony.

I especially liked the "Wideland." It captured the feeling of a nice ranch, where there's a bunch of horses galloping along with grace. ^.^

Yes. I've heard that before! It might be because I got him into composing, but I don't want to take all the credit, after all, we come from the same parents! :heh: But with me, I can't compose anything that sounds good for the piano. I guess I just prefer using a variety instruments. (ADD) XD

Thank you for the comments. I honestly didn't think they (my songs) were all that good. You are right they are short. I will begin work on a longer piece. (I'm thinking something epic, similar to The Lord of the Rings music.)

Anyway, here is another piece I wrote just this afternoon. I was just thinking how good it feels to be home from school, and from work, and parking permits, and all that stuff, and to just be at home with my family. This is the song that came to mind. It's called, for obvious reasons, At Home.

Sorry for the double post. I just finished a piece that was inspired by none other than Ichigos! (The site, not the fruit! XD )

I was just thinking about how warm the welcome has been so far, and that everyone here seems to have something positive to add. This one is for you guys!

Nice little short pieces :heh:
The ichigos one sounds like a march or something.
And the at home reminds me of lounging around the house. or that elavator music. :)
Hopefully you succeed in making lengthier pieces :)
ha (ADD) XD

Thank you for the encouragement, I am actually working on something right now! I should have it posted at around 9 am. Keep an eye out for it!
Haha. Another short piece. I think I have some sort of disease. <_< Anyway, this is just me messing around with all the percussion in Printmusic.

My favourite's Detroit. I agree with Marlon that everything sounds detuned, but IMO that's a strength. I like how it sounds.

You seem to like happy-go-lucky rhythms. You might want to try longer notes at some point? What about rests? ;)

Jungle beat is interesting.

Looking forward to the longer one. :)

newyork

Very fitting of a city theme. I can picture the neon lights brightening the sky as pedestrians walk among the streets having fun. I particularly like your use of tubular bells. Fade-out? Good idea. Reminds me of something that would fit very well into an urban setting of a video-game.

cha

Wonderful percussion line. The soft woodwing melody is calming and hummable, and the quick little interludes with the supporting instruments really highlight the feel of the song. You sure do know how to create a jazzy/samba atmosphere! Also, nice ending.

detroit

Slight dissonances... but very deliberate dissonances at that! They add an interesting effect to the piece. The percussion gets just slightly redundant, but as you create slight little breaks from the pattern along the way, it takes away from the repetition very well. That brass (?) melody sure is off-beat. Your ending could not be more superb.

wideland

Whoa! Good bass line and interesting portamento runs in the melodic line. Once again, your percussion line never ceases to please me. Very basic chord progression and structure -- very fitting. I like this kind of style.

athome

FFVII-esque, I daresay. Very good manipulation of rhythms and subtle synchopations. To top it off, you've implanted yet another good percussion line. What a laid-back piece! Is that last chord unresolved? It's rather hard to tell, but either way, it's pleasing to the ear.

ichigos

Marching band, anyone? What a marching, driven piece! Short and sweet, not much more to say.

jungly beat

Minimalist percussion -- good idea! Indeed, as the name suggests, this piece would be right at home in a jungle scene. Very catchy percussion parts that build slowly upon one another, but the lack of a theme makes it somewhat irritating after just a little while. However, it could certainly work in the appropriate environment.

Altogether, GSDS, your style is refreshing and unique. I look forward to seeing you blossom into a more experienced composer as you age along with all of your friends at Ichigo's. :)

I know I had to listen to the Ichigo's march, and I'm glad I did, so bouncy and uplifting! Exactly what we all need. Hmm, I wonder if this song could be adopted as the official anthem, or if we could have an Ichigo's theme CMA

The Ichigos anthem will be composed for the Ichigo's band to perform, remember?

I'm having quite the bout of composers block! :sigh: Here is the mus file for my lengthy piece... I can't seem to figure out what to do next! (I've never composed for orchestra... but I want this set of instruments to work!) Feel free to change things or add if you wish! Think of this as a sneak peek! Also, ignore the instrument names, because I changed most of the voices as I went along and never really got around to fixing the names. :heh:

In my opinion, the piece sounds a bit too relaxed for such a gallant occasion (ie, parts like the waltz section just feels too out of place). Maybe you should work out a melody beforehand, and try to harmonize and develop on that if you are getting stuck very often. Your other pieces are pretty good, especially wideland - that's one realistic sounding guitar part! Nice use of controllers all around, though for some of your pieces, especially detroit, the drumline should vary more, with fills here and there for the transitions. But anyways, if you are getting stuck on a lot, it might be a good idea to plan your pieces out ahead of time a bit.

Thank you for the suggestion! That is a very good idea! I have several unfinished pieces on my computer so maybe I can go back to one of those for ideas! Thank you again!

Well, I know that it's a real break from my usual style, but I figured I'd post my first two songs on Acid Pro! Here they are: Test and Refreshments.

Wow. They were all excellent. You're a very energetic, versatile composer, going from something jazzy and modern, to something jungly, to something country-like. ^_^

My favorites were Wideland and Cha. They both sounded gorgeous.

I have no real criticism to offer, other than to say to keep composing. ;)

To comment on the latest two that I only saw just now:

They were both good, especially the first one, but...they had no melody. That made it feel really flat and lacking. I was just waiting for something to please my ears but I was disappointed.

They were good, though. They just need a melody or...something. :\

I love that techno stuff! :w00t:

In the first, I think you used one of the synth leads (fargo, I think) too much and in the second, I think the... Great! I don't know what it's called (in the drums). I think it was too loud.

wOOt! Good techno, I like the beat! It needed more stuff in it though. (Vampiric Llama)

The second one, the only thing that bothered me was this one noise in the background...I can't think how to describe it...

Marlon

Yeah, I can't describe it either. It's like a... thing! You probably know what we're talking about, right, GSDS? :heh:

It was pretty good and all but...

TOO REPETATIVE!

GSDS
September 24th, 2005, 01:50 am

Well techno is all about repetitive. I used to like techno... but now it got too old for me. 'thing so far that i've done work on it some more' can be like a sim's background music. lol. that's the first thing that popped in my head.
