I think my last thread was purged. Anyways i value your judgements, no matter how harsh they may be..

Well if this is your first composition, it's O.K. But it needed more harmony and it wasn't fluent. :heh:

I like the violin in the beginning... but sadly that's the only thing I liked. The sudden pauses didn't seem like it was fitting. and you need to come up with a better melody.

Decending Cloud
Yes, the strings in the beginning were pretty good. The rim shots(?) after that didn't really belong and the percussion that followed was really boring. If you added one more note at the end the ending would be decent. Overall it needs improvement.

Descending cloud- Wow, pretty intense. Would make a perfect theme for a villain of some rpg game.
Mary's Lamb Died.."- Aww, sadness XD someone needs to kiss little Mary, and buy her a new lamb..poor baby.
Good job, Derek Zhu

Mary's Little Lamb Died
Haha nice title. Definetly better than the first. The part with the really fast notes seemed kinda sudden. You could transition into that if you wanted to. I didn't really like it personally; it's not my kind of song. But it wasn't bad theoretically. (does that make sense?)

Not sure where the Massacre comes in...a few holes needing patching, but it's pretty good. One suggestion is that you should bring out the melody a bit more. It seems bland and hidden.

Lol. I've heard sooo many composers say that. It doesn't work that way ;)

It might sound random, but serial/atonal music are like that, they use mathematics and stuff like to compose (ie: twelve tones system and etc...)

That's probably true, 'cause I don't know what it is (XD), but I'm just saying... Usually you make Music for others to enjoy, not total randomness that makes no sense to my ears, LoL.
So anywho... How does that sort of music work? I've actually never heard of it. Time to do some research!

^ Just what I was going to say. Composers often drive themself way to far from what actually matters. No one cares about math in music. Is it a futile attempt to sound original or something? I don't know, but it's silly. You should use all that knowledge to compose something that actually hooks the listener instead.

I had to do this kind of composition in school, too... We had to roll dice (each number was given a note name) and just listen to how it sounds.
*looks for 20th century study guide about this*

Musical and opinion wise, I would 100% agree with you, because I'm not really a fan of serialism much, but to some trained ears, such music is like an 'ear puzzle' for them to solve, so it's really to the person's taste.

I haven't been here for a while now...again  I've finally completed high school and will be off to uni later this month. Since I'm not taking a music course any longer, and have stopped my piano lessons, I've drifted away from the practical side of music. I said in my last post that I won't be composing anymore because I won't have access to Sibelius. God I wish I could have taken home with me one of those mac computers at school with a midi keyboard.
However I found a very easy to use program that works with loops. This is my first composition/experiment with this new program. I don't really know how to use all the functions, just the basics. I tried experimenting with texture and layers of sound here. The result isn't very structured, sounds very messy to me. How does it sound to you?

There is some skill in making a song entirely out of loops (and making it interesting). Electrocrunk made me feel like I was being rushed or something... like at the end of super metroid. alarms going of and such.
that said, I really think you should get yourself some program where you can write melodies to go along with any future loop-pieces ;)

I'm not very good with writing melodies, my serial composition didn't really have a melody. The others so far have either been simple or terrible. Still, I'll work on it, I'll have to get noteworthy or buy sibelius!

I'd go for Sibelius. ;]

^ Me too. sibelius 1 is way better than noteworthy imo.
melody: try to hum something then write it down...
