I'm going to die in school this year. x_x My parents expect straight A's but I'm in algebra 2 honors with this one teacher. Every year, he give about 4 A's in his class, and the average score on the first test was about a 40%.*dies* I got a C+ but my parents don't know yet.

prodigyviolin101
September 18th, 2005, 02:30 am
Don't worry oblivion, the best thing to do is tell your parents, believe me trying to hide that grade from them is much worse then just telling them what you got.

Oblivion
September 18th, 2005, 02:34 am
Well, from my experience, it's kinda not cause I tell them, then they get mad, then they forget and ask me again, and I tell them, and they get mad again, and I tell them I told them before, and then they don't believe me... And then they forget again, and it goes on for quite a while...

kquietude
September 18th, 2005, 12:00 pm
Maybe you should get your parents to keep a file of your results or something, and when you tell them, you get them to write it down, so the next time they declare you never told them, you can ask them to dig out the file... :sweat:

Bah, i can't wait to get out of school. But then again, I don't think life is going to be much better after school. Meh. :(

School sucks ass. I have to wake up 5:30 in the morning, take a 1&1/2 hr. bus ride, get a shit load of homework, take another 1 & 1/2 hr. bus ride home. Normally get home around 5:30-6:00 P.M. and ugh, just horrible. I do my homework on the bus >.>. All my teachers hate me cuz I flirt too much and blurt out random comments in the middle of class such as "Old wrinkly people confuse me". But the key to success is...
ONLY SHOW YOUR PARENTS THE WORK YOU GET A B OR ABOVE ON. Live by that, and you will do well ^.^ That is, until parent teacher night... and semester >.>

ACT has the oddest school system, I swear. As far as I know, we're the only place that make Years 11 & 12 be college, as opposed to the last two years of high school. So, we're at a school for 4 years, then we have to go to a NEW one for the last two! Which has lead to a lot of confusion about people thinking Inu, Des and I are older than we are, because we're in college XD

High School is VERY piss easy compared to College. You year 10 canberrans, WATCH OUT, you're in for a shock next year =_=

O.O Well, I wouldn't necessarily cry, I'd be rather mad, but usually, people get very attached to their instruments, you know... as one set. She was all right, she didn't make a big drama scene or anything. *applauds her for that* I hate it when people make a big deal.

dominate_ze_vorld
October 17th, 2005, 11:01 pm
It depends on what you want. I heard that Harvard is best if you want law, but Yale is best if you want medicine. So it just depends on what department. And getting straight A's isn't everything. A person I acquainted with got a perfect score on her SAT's, straight A student, blah blah blah, all that good stuff. I think, besides good grades, you also need to do extracurricular activities, sports, maybe some sort of job. Because I think the thing that is missing from my acquainted friend is that she didn't have a job. A job shows that you are responsible, and are a leader for your own self, and can survive by yourself. That's just what I think though.

It depends on what you want. I heard that Harvard is best if you want law, but Yale is best if you want medicine. So it just depends on what department. And getting straight A's isn't everything. A person I acquainted with got a perfect score on her SAT's, straight A student, blah blah blah, all that good stuff. But, she didn't really work or anything, so she probably didn't have any experience in real life, so she didn't get accepted to Harvard.

The discipline master saw them on the camera and came screaming at them. So we know the canteen cameras and definitely on.

Except high school isn't easy O.o In middle school, you could get 60's in every single class and make it into highschool. While, if you make 60's in every single class in high school, chances are you aint maken it to college.

Further more, from what I've seen (which isn't alot), I'd rather be in college than high school. While in middle school, I didn't really want to go to high school.

M
August 24th, 2007, 02:30 am
AP courses =\= college courses.

Trust me, they're different from one another. The content may be similar or the same, but the environment is far different. Far different. There's a reason lecturers in high school are called Teacher, and college lectures are called Professors. Teachers teach. They work with you, they answer questions that arise at the moment, or shortly afterward, and they follow up on your work. Professors profess. They're more exacting; in such ways that they are god in the subject, and you are a follower. If you do not do as they say, then you will be smitened.

The quality/quantity of homework is also different. Sure, AP courses seem to be college like in feeling, but they are just "advanced placement" curriculum. The topics discussed are still limited to a particular scope, and it is that threshold that college is just above. You'll understand what I mean with this after you've enrolled college Calculus, or take a calculus based physics course.

Also, I'll accept that (all of) High School is difficult, if and only if you have greater than 40 hours worth of homework a week.

Note: That's the common gauge for credit hours per homework hours.
18 contact hours (about five enrolled classes) * 2.2 hours each =~ 40 hours

Well, this year I'll be quite the busy bee.

-Piano (4 hours min/day)
-School Homework
-Music Theory & Composition
-New Job

Basically, these four things would take up all my time, expecially Piano and my Music Theory/Composition. Since I take pretty average classes for High School, all I need to (and I will be) worry about is Piano; with the rate/teacher that I'll be working at/with, I'll be able to get into any college of my choice (full scholarship).

So I'll looking forward to busting my ass to get into a great music college. x_x

Meh, I've taken a college course, and it wasn't *bad*. But then again, it was a local community college so I guess it's not entirely the same, but it was Physics. =\

And I agree with the points Asuka made about middle-High school, and High-College. At least in college you have some direction like a major that you chose and can work towards, whilst in high school you have to fulfill requirements in every category and maybe only a *semester*'s worth of something you actually want to take. =\

Speaking of worthless classes, I'm in five AP classes, plus one weighted, Advanced Debate and Orchestra, eleven fully-participated clubs, Chinese school, practising the piano, violin (which is different from Orchestra), extra volunteer, and mini-jobs.

Note: Everything is per week unless specified

Web Applications, AJAX, and Design...4 Credits | 0 Contact Hours | 8 Hours Homework
Digital Logic........................3 Credits | 3 Contact Hours | 6 Hours Homework
Digital Logic Lab....................2 Credits | 2 Contact Hours | 1-2 Hour(s) writeup/lab

UML and Generic Language Semantics...3 Credits | 3 Contact Hours | 2 Hours Homework

System Administration and Helpdesk
of Mediated Classrooms (intern)....20-50-?? Hours

Meaning I'm doing schoolwork anywhere from 66 to 99 hours a week. Take 30 minutes for unforeseen extenuating circumstances, and then one hour worth of smalltalk with colleagues. Given I get 8 hours of sleep a day, it leaves me 30 minutes worth of pure freetime on the low side, and a missing 30 minutes worth of free time on my high side. Of course this is all theoretical at this point, but in my past two years of college the 2*credit homework rule has been pretty true with the sole exception of my physics course last year, which was 4 credits but took 10 hours a week.

Isn't scheduling fun? And all this starts on this coming Wednesday EDT, though my internship continues through this summer semester's break.

Uhh yeah sorta, it was easier getting As last year than it is this year. Chemistry is no picnic(Considering all she does is lecture), neither is Algebra 2(Just because I hate algebra, but I liked Geometry). AP Lit is a little hard, but you can expect that from an AP class. The rest is pretty easy, its just all a matter of how studying I should do. Because I studied forever and a day for that Chemistry test and the teacher just came in and said and I quote "Y'all didn't do worth a flip." But I did okay on it in my opinion which was a 87 and my sister said those were the grades she got and she was a straight A student herself. So I hope I can study more next time.

During school... Why do older people pick on the underclass?

pianocrazy90
September 2nd, 2007, 05:30 am
Because its the way of school. The circle of life. But yeah Im appaled at this though, the upperclassman should be an example of how someone should be for the lowerclassman not a bad influence. Maybe if they were to nicer to lower than when the lower get to upper they might return the kindness they received from the previous upper. But sometimes lowerclassman can be annoying but I don't give them a thrashing doing or being so I just sorta ignore them. And as you go up grades you'll get more respect instead of being looked down upon which is a good thing, but this shouldn't give an upperclassman leverage to put down a person from a lower grade. I try to be nicer to lower when I can, when Im not really in a rush. Actually Im a little short with everyone when I be in a hurry.

Look for common things in people you see. Like if someone is wearing a band tee-shirt that you know, say somethin to em like "Hey you listen to ____? Me too", stuff like that. If people ask you questions, don't just answer and do something else, try to draw out conversations.

Try to get friends in every class, it'll make your day go by so much more easier :) Once you get some friends, try to get to know their friends :)

I say friends are just a hindrance to your learning. If you want to excel in school and get good grades than stay away from people. Although that might be hard considering you around people for most of the day. But friends might give you the incentive you need to get good grades. I don't know really. But if your looking for friends though then just try to find a common intrest among one or more people and then once that happens they may become your friend. And as Asuka said you might get more friends for being their friend, you never know. But really though its best just to find you one good friend and stick with them when you go to a new school.

Well not necessarily.

I mean usually if there's a new kid, teachers/administrators make sure no one's ever alone at lunch tables and stuff. If there's a new kid, their first days of school are always being chaperoned by someone who volunteered to take them around the school or are in Student Government.

So I think the new kids in school are relatively befriended quickly. =\

@ Hantony- Well the guys in my school only care about one thing, sports. And the girls could care less about the guys. They've been doing this ever since K-5. Which was many years ago, and now were in what the 11th grade and they haven't changed a bit. I don't care for sports that much unless its football, I do like football.

But anyways its getting harder to stay in the honor soceity, considering you have to have like 92 or above average. Im not sure if I will make it this year though.

I still say that the school model needs to be changed from the ground up. It's been physically proven that if someone walks away from the standard classroom setup --- Chalkboard, then Teacher in front, students behind the teacher in uniform rows --- that the material is better understood. Many breaktrhoughs have came about since Aristotle created "the classroom"; did anyone think to apply and revise this?

Only a small percentile of teachers, and they go greatly out of their way to make these changes. The school itself needs to help, and I don't see it happening.

Hm... I don't know what you meant about standard in these days, but our English teachers have markerboards, are generally very easygoing and laidback (but not lazy in teaching), but they have their rows in half-circles, and their students get the highest average scores on most prominent English tests compared to Math department's uniform rows, et cetera.

I think in the end, it's still about the teacher. O.o

Good advice, but pick you questions carefully, that one begs the answer "No, I just wear their shirt for kicks, no duh I listen to them you moron."

I was always teh new kid, I hated the whole "this is your handler for a couple days" thing, It was nice, but sometimes you felt a hindrance XD

I agree with both M and DZV, the whole rows things needs to be rethought, heck everything does, to allow...interaction amongst students, hell the class I less talk in is the class where Im given more freedoms.
(ex. I can leave the room as I please for a reasonable ammount of time, I can talk aslong as I dont bother anyone and the teacher isnt speaking directly to me...just logical human behaviour) but..if you drop me in a class where im not allowed to do anything...I end up paying less atention and stuff like that.

HanTony

I was allowed to talk in class like luis but only in some classes. The teahers that didn't grant permition for talking would try to make us too musy to talk or just waste the lessons by shouting at us all as a class. The ones that failed to do this ended up with nicknames such as "trout" and "egore."
If you want good grades then avoid proving to the teachers that they have no real power.

ratemyprofessor ftw XD, but i guess i was just lucky that i got decent teachers that know how to teach and do something other than tell us to read the book and give us tests and i can actually find when i need to...unlike many teachers i've seen who somehow disappear once class is over like they have a invisibility cloak or threw a zillion smoke bombs

I insist that you Americans enlighten me on this mystical method of how you run your education system. This constant talk of Honour/AP classes, Algebra I, Biology II, senior trips and such makes me feel like a fob.
[/ignorance]

Honor & AP (Advanced Placement) courses are classes that are usually in a higher bracket. Basically, they cover more material, more indepth. Some of these classes can be applied to your enrolled college; called College Credit.

Algebra I is Algebra I. If those across the seas call it differently, I'll be quite suprised. You know it's [( a+b=x | x-a=b | x-b=a )].

Now for the general disclosure:

The US education system starts with a student as early as the age of 5 (or when potty trained) with "early fives" or in Kindergarden. It depends on the intelegence of the pupil to decide which of these they are placed. Kindergarden and Early Fives usually lasts about four to five hours a day, and sometimes held in two sessions; AM and PM. Basic phonics, coloring, and other developmental things are done in this level.

Afterwhich comes grade school, numbered 1-8. This series is divided two to three times. One through four is Elementary School. Five and six are Intermediate School. Seven and Eight are Middle School. Elementary courses are usually preselected by the school themselves on the basic four subjects, add art and music. Intermediate is more of the same, only it becomes more technical based and geared more towards analitical thinking. There are Field Trips that sometimes occur, and students leave the classroom to learn more about what exists outside their four point spread.

Middle school is the start of the elective system. That is, you have your basic four topics, and two courses which you "elect" to take. This ranges from Music to Electronics to Creative Writing. It is usually around here that afterschool clubs really start to kick in, though none are usually required of the student.

Then, after Grade School comes Secondary School, graded 9-12; also called High School. Each grade level has a titled reference, namely, and in order: Freshman, Sophmore, Junior, Senior.

In Secondary School, there is much more freedom than in your previous courses. Your classes taken are all electives, with exception that you have to meet a type of quoue for you to graduate. Most Secondary Schools builds the classes around classes entitled "Freshman/Sophmore College English" which are geared to college-bound students in subject, then Creative or Technical Writing, and finally a type of research English course. "Pre-Algebra" or fractional mathmatics, Algebra or varible mathmatics, Algebra II or varible mathmatics two, Geometry or study of earthen shapes, and other forms of math. Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Geography, American History, American Government, and Law.

Each class is given a number of credits, and any particular student is allowed only so much in a day. The core classes listed above usually fulfill all but two daily class meetings (or periods). In which the wide array of electives are given.

There is also a hierarchy system given to the courses. Not unlike college, if you would like to take Creative Writing, you would need to have completed Sophmore College English to take. Also, there are courses which you can enroll in that can give you college credit (AP). Some courses just give you more credits than normally alloted in a standard period, thus allowing a superior GPA (see below) than what is normally permitted (above 4.0s).

Grading is given on a four point system known as a GPA system. Which looks similar to as follows:
4.0 = 100-90 = A
3.77 = 89-86 = B+
3.5 = 85-83 = B
3.3 = 82-80 = B-
2.77 = 79-78 = C+
2.5 = 77-75 = C
2.3 = 75-73 = C-
1.77 = 72-67 = D+
1.5 = 67-63 = D
1.3 = 62 = D-
0.0 = <62 = E

And I will agree with anyone on this: The grading system is fucking screwy.

There's also a conduct review usually given on a five point scale; numerical.

And that's a very, very brief, and incomplete summary of the US school system.

Well we had to type a paper for AP lit just recently and its due monday. I finished it. Now to get it proofread for the second time. Man after the first proofread my paper was a bloody murder(Means it had tons of red pen marks) with grammatical errors such as unclear antecedants, ackward sentances, poor word choice, punctuation, and some other stuff I can't remember. Man the english language sucks. Just kidding, but seriously though once you think about it English is one of the hardest languages to learn. I just feel so dumb after taking english grammar classes for more than ten years, you'd think this stuff would sink in, nope.

@ M- Huh, our school uses the numerical average as 100-93 as an A and so on so forth(Which is the 7 point numerical average system). Or are you talking about college that uses the 10 points system for numerical averages. I don't know.

Thank you kindly, M. :)

Luckily here, anything above 80 is an A. =D Or atleast in BC, Alberta, Québec, Ontario and NFLD. There are, apparently, Advanced Placement classes in Canada as well, but not in my region. I have not heard tell of Honour classes, but we do have "enhanced" courses which may amount to the same thing.

And that's a very, very brief, and incomplete summary of the US school system.

That is a basic setup. It varies though from state to state and from school to school. For example, my grading scale was...
93-100 A
83-92 B
76-82 C
70-75 D
10-69 Failure
0-9 Incomplete

and levels of education...
K-5 Elementary
6-8 Middle School
9-12 High School

Also, every state is required to give a standardized test and integrate it into the finale GPA of the student. You can't fail it, but it can drag your grade down pretty low if you do poorly enough. In Pennsylvania, or test was the PSSA (Pennsylvania State Scholastic Aptitude Test)

You were grade on Reading Comprehension, Writing ability, and Mathematics and you could score on the 5 point scale...

5 - Proficient
4 - Above Average
3 - Average
2 - Below Average
1 - Unsatisfactory
0 - Ungradeable Material
