I do not own any of the renders used in my sigs.

they are definetly good sigs. I don't ever make sigs that utelise new fonts, and I just use the defaults. You would be surprised at what you can do with very little selection ^^

Stel
October 10th, 2005, 08:50 am
Ah... I guess I've never taken a good look at what the defaults offer, but it has always been my habit to create the graphics first, then use a suitable font taken from dafont.com for the text.

P.S. If anyone would teach me how to take screenshots, that would be greatly appreciated.

For the next two weeks, I will be doing avatars and banners for sixteen characters from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children using the same style. Here's presenting the first set: Cait Sith

Avatar:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Cait-Sith-avatar.gif
This took eight layers to create.

Sig:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Cait-Sith-banner.gif
I did this banner with his playfulness in mind.

I have a question, how did you do the cross-hatch effect? And the other one in the right-upper cornor?

Hiei

The second sig you made, I have no idea how you made that background. I want to learn how to do that.

I used brushes. ^_^
And Hiei, I'll post the tutorial for it soon. (When I get back home from school.)
I'm currently doing a Marlene set, finished the avi but still working on the sig. In the meantime, here's a sig done for fellow forum member The Cutest Angel, but since she's not using it, I think I will on another forum:

Stel

Sad to say this but I can't remember how I created that background. :heh: But then again, my backgrounds arre born out of randomisation and experimentation. I did, however, save the background and below is the link to it. To use it, open it in Photoshop, go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation, click colourize and move the sliders around to change the colours. You can find proper tutorials on making backgrounds around the web, but don't bother memorizing the steps as it is not recommended to use a background repeatedly. In fact, it's best to use different backgrounds for different sigs.

Okaaayy... Here's the Marlene set.

Avatar:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Marlene-Avatar.gif

Sig:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Marlene-banner.gif

*Horror!* For this character, I really don't know which one I hate more, the avatar or the sig. They've got to be my worst creations yet! The Marlene in the sig doesn't even look like Marlene. Oh well, there are times when inspiration doesn't come naturally. To make up for this set, I'll be sure to make my next one my best yet. As always, criticism is much welcomed.

P.S. Also, recommend which character I should do next. I can't decide between Rufus, Tifa and Loz. (Next set will be heavier and harder stuff)

MM: Lol. I found Marlene okay, except for the times when she acted like a spoilt brat.
TCA: Of course you can use it, I made it for you. Also, be sure to check Graphics Request thread as someone else has made a sig using your second picture and I think you might like that even more.

Next character: Rufus ShinRa. I expect to take about two days making this set. Lots of effort going into it, after which I'll take a break from sig making for one week since this coming Monday is my exams.

Monday: English, Paper 1 + 2
Tuesday: Mother Tongue, Paper 1 + 2
Wednesday: History + Chemistry
Thursday: Geography + Literature
Friday: Mathematics <== End

Stel
October 15th, 2005, 02:28 pm
Okay! Guess what? I managed to complete the Rufus set today! I used a completely different style this time and I think it fits Rufus well. Apart from the screenshots, eveything else is created from scratch, including the border. As for the little bit of animation on the sig, it took 50+ frames on ImageReady. Total time I took for this set was more than 6 hours, from planning on paper all the way to the final touch-ups. Tell me what you guys think! Last but not least, I'd like to say a big thank-you to Mies, for teaching me how to take screenshots.

Avi:

P.S. If anyone would teach me how to take screenshots, that would be greatly appreciated.

I dunno if you found out yet or not, but just in case you press "Prnt Scrn" (on the regular american keyboards), which is on the right side of the keyboard. This saves your screen onto your clipboard, which you then can paste (probably onto Paint, since Photoshop doesn't let you paste external images, I dont' think).

Other than that, very nice jobs on your previous works.

Stel
October 17th, 2005, 10:24 am
Stinger, TCA, Marlon: Thank you, thank you and thank you!
Pyramus: Well, I was thinking of how to take screenshots from a video, and Mies taught me previously through PM. Thank you as well. :)

As every one knows, I'm currently having my exams and have to refrain from sig making and watching anime no matter how much I wish to  So it will be a while before I can start work again...

1. Exams are over
2. Users of very old Internet Explorer will not be able to see the transparency above. Where it's suppose to be transparent, white will turn up.
3. If you cannot see the transparency in the Gif above, go get Mozilla Firefox.

In the transparency, some of the picture is cut off. Not picking on you, but it would have been a bit sharper if some of the defining lines were still there.

I hope you understood that.

Stel

Happy Halloween! Here are 4 Halloween sets with a twist. (Right, some of them don't look like they are Halloween, but, whateva.) 1 more set will be uploaded in a few hours time to join in the fun.

Note: These are NOT masterpieces, just something fun that I've been doing. Masterpieces will be sent for rating.

Warning: Some disturbing images.

I like that new set; it has a certain rustic quality... very rural, laid-back, relaxing... The composition is nice, too, as it covers all the spaces and allows the eye to wander around without being strictly directed at any one area.

You make Really good sigs.
I can't make sigs, or.. they don't
look that good

Stel
October 31st, 2005, 04:38 am
@Edwin: Yeah, I thought that set was the closest to Halloween in terms of theme.
@Pyramus: Thanks. Well, that set was about Ed Elric's memories, so I thought the rustic feel would fit quite well.
@Dark: Thanks. I'm good at sig-making only because of endlessly creating 1-5 sets a day to keep improving. Not to forget everyone who has chipped in in terms of suggestions, comments and encouragement.

Here's a set for my hubby, Dark:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Darkava.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Darksig.jpg

Description: Basically about my hubby's favourite anime character. Background of the sig was made using brushes. The border was used to add an overall Tech feel. The small ornamental text actually reads:

Wer zu Lebzeit gut auf Erden wird nach dem Tod ein Engel werden?
den Blick gen Himmel fragst du dann: warum man sie nicht sehen kann.

Which translates to:
Who in their lifetime is good on Earth and will become an angel after death?
you look to the sky and ask: why can't you see them

Taken from the lyrics of Engel by Rammstein. (Some of you might realise it's the same text as my current sig)

RD

Way nice Stel. But the ava's colors dont really go along with the siggys. See, ones purple, and anothers red and black...And the borders dont match...But meh, looks very great otherwize.

Stel
October 31st, 2005, 04:47 am
He has purple hair. Just that in the siggy there's a red light which makes his hair look red. I might do something about the border though...
EDIT: I've edited the avatar. Okay, I cheated, took the image from the same source... but it does look better...

EDIT: Some of you might have heard me speak of another forum where sigs are being scrutinized and rated harshly with shotgun honesty. Well, I'm really glad to say that my works have finally been recognised. The Suicide Boy and Sleeping Children received high ratings and this would not have been possible without all you people here. A big hug and thank you!

Okay, I can't go on doing sigs that most of which I won't be using. Therefore, I've decided to open this thread up for requests. (Hope this is allowed.) If you want a sig or ava that is done by me, then post here with your request. However, you can only request one sig every 2 weeks. During this time, you can get other sig artists to help you create using the general Graphics Request thread.

Want to request for a sig? Then use the format below!

Sheesh... I've been away for a while so couldn't really do anything...

To-do List:
1) mystery_editor request
2) Sieg. Hacker request (from another forum)
3) Graphics competition entry (another forum thingy)

RD, I'm a little confused by your request. I take it that it isn't really a sig request and that you're just unsure of how to use Image Ready? (i.e. no need for me to do any other special effects) If so, I can get it done in 5 mins. Reply asap.

Anywhom, I like the siggy

There are different ways to interpret a picture. And you're calling Demos (the guy) emotional? He's the coldest-blooded killer in existance, and my favourite. Okay, shan't launch into his life story. But like I said, there are more than one way to 'interact' with a picture. And to me, as long as you're holding a weapon, you're good enough for tech. In fact, I feel ready to make a tech Gunslinger Girl (Triela?) set. XD But I'll make a sig for 2-D (Gorillaz) first...

Yay! Finally, a new set for myself. (I didn't take a break from sig making, just all my previous sets were over forum's regulations <_< )

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/snow-avatar.png

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/snow-sig4.gif

As usual, I always talk about my sigs/sets.
==> Okay, so people always take their avatar from the sig, or from some related pictures. This time round, I did it in reverse, and I quite like the effect it produced. :P
==> The guy up there is Demos, character of and drawn by Jisuk Cho. He's an Italian Mafia, Don of his Family. He's the same guy as here:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Demos.png
(Improved version of previous tech sig)
==> Since he's Italian, I thought I should give him some Italian words (previous one is German) ^.^
Buon Natale = Merry Christmas
Tu Scendi dalle Stelle = You Come from the Stars
Yes, I hate using English for sigs (don't know why)
==> It's rare to see him at peace. Merry Christmas everybody!

*Theme: (General feel for the sig. Dark? Melancholic? Mischievous?)
Colour Preferance: (Blues? Greens? Mix? You get the idea)
*Text: (Do you want your username on it? Or any other text/quote?)

The first one is really nice, but the text is to bold and the image...WTF is Spike doing?!

*fetches mind out of gutter*

The second one is my favorite. Its well blanced, composition and color wize. But the characer is a tad to dark IMO.

The last one is my least favorite. I dont think a tech background is good for that image. I would have gone for a more natural, earth toned background. Like a feild or somthing.

Reason: Because Stel is good at making stuff from scratch.
Misc. Notes: Thank you! Also make it fit the Ichigos sig rules. Please, make it look Christmas like. One more thing, could you maybe add snow if it doesn't make it look bad?

Edit: Anyone can give it a shot, though. Here is an example: (If anyone can shrink the size so it fit the rules please do so!)

@septermagick: I'm sorry, but I can't do your request as I don't know how to create the bow.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Chloe1.png

- A full Tech sig.
- Again, I have to shrink it for my sig (which kinda destroyed the quality)
- If you can't see that little bit of transparency, do everyone a favour by switching to Mozilla Firefox.
- Featuring Chloe from the anime Noir
- Thank you, Sarkurah, for recommending this awesome anime...
- Although I'd much prefer it if the creators did not kill off my favourite character. In fact, I'd rather Mireille died. :heh:

Holy fucking christ Stel, you have out done your self now. Making a short short gif movie in your sig isnt new to the two of us, but I think its new to Ichigos. But wowzers that nice.

8/10 for both (im going to be a bit strict from now on) The gif is a tad fast. I think the original movie was a bit fast, but you could just slow it down a tad. Then the burn like layer is a bit over the top now. I think a B&W layer would have looked better, or even a black background with vivid light on. Personly, I think the grunge look (if thats what you were going for) could have been done better. And I know it could have been done better knowing you.

o_0 Isn't Spike just hugging a woman? Anyway, I found it a rather sloppy job, maybe because I had no interest in doing it and didn't put in my best effort. The second was also done on request, but it was more interesting. The request specifically asked for dark colours and gothic outlook, so I couldn't protest. As for the third, funny, coz I won the contest I entered it for based on a few factors, including the fact that they (voters) felt that the tech themed background suited the theme of the anime.

I love the Tsukasa German one!
Thanks alot! It's also my favourite out of the three.

Thanks for the comment. Personally, though, I wasn't going for grunge. I can never understand grunge and neither will I intentionally go for it. And the only style I ever went for consciously was tech, the rest I go with what I feel.

Thanks alot. I wish that too, but I just hope that they raise the height maximum. :heh: Moreover, I realise the size of my files are on the increase as there is more work involved in creating my sigs now. Maybe I should put a 500X120 .swf file as my sig (Macromedia Flash file type), that way they can't check for my file size! :bleh: Lol.

Okay, the reason Im giving it such a low score is because it just isnt that good. Yes, im not that good my self, but meh, its still not that good no offence.

First, the border is crapped up. I can see what you were going for, like a distressed, old book look? Well, you had the first step done; getting the main outline drawn. Instead of a black border, you should have used a transparancy. And to top it off some burns around the edges (some light burns actualy)

Then theres the quality. Its a bit pixly, like around Chi's chin. And I know you were given the tip of Anti Aliasing, and I highly recomend you use it from now own no matter what. The text doesnt blend in, its just really blocky.

And color! I know it would look just as fine with out color, but some pinks for all the flowers would just be enough.

I'm sorry, but you have something against my drawing? :heh:
I forgot to add, it's drawn with a large amount of references to one picture (traced most of the major outlines). Touch-ups on the overall piece done in Photoshop. And it's not suppose to be a black border. Just that the forum it's for has a black background so it's transparency to them. I didn't want to save transparency in PNG as I know most of them do not have Mozilla Firefox plus the alternative is to save transparency in Gif for IE users which, you know,...

Now that I know that you drew the image..

10/10 on the image it self. Trust me on this everyone, Clamp art is very hard to duplicate! I can only get a good head and hair of Chi done when working on it for long and tedious hours.

Stel, the shading, proportions, everything is well done. Now, how long did it take you to finish it? Its just eye wowing. But I only have one tiny complaint. The eyes...They are to bold. If they were a bit more grey or less bold It would make my day to have that drawing.

You could always photoshop someone in there, but in all honesty it's still excellent how it is now. Indeed, I would go so far as to label it my favourite of the ones up so far, though in truth that's not that big of a deal.

I've been thinking, and... I'd like to have a set about komuso monks (the shakuhachi playing monks with tengai hats [basket hats]), but I don't want my own incompetence to get in the way, so... if you would be so kind... :china:

*Theme: Reflective, contemplative, reclusive, Zen Bhuddist, Edo period Japan, or Japan in general.. (for example, falling sakura flowers or something like that)

Colour Preferance: As long as it fits with the pictures and theme, I don't mind; I'm not worried about your judgement of colours or anything.

*Text: In the background, if you can, a Japanese poem like this (http://www.d4.dion.ne.jp/~happyjr/saigyo2/t00_obotukana.gif) might look cool. Since I have no idea what that says (other than that it's about Spring), it'd be great if you knew of a perhaps more relevant poem... Or perhaps some saying or proverb... or anything like that. If you can't fit any text in, don't worry about it. Anything to enhance the theme.

*Images and Links: This, (http://www.pacificasiamuseum.org/calendar/images/0704_komuso_lg.jpg) this, (http://www.shakuhachi.com/Images/TOC-Articles-Komuso.jpg) this, (http://www.zenflute.com/artwork/JS_Priest.jpg) this, (http://www.konkle.com/shakuhachi/the_shakuhachi/players_4.jpg) this, (http://www.research.umbc.edu/eol/9/lee/grafix/komuso.jpg) this, (http://contest2002.thinkquest.jp/tqj2002/50392/img/komuso.jpg) this, (http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~feob/kaidou/rakuhoku/komuso.jpg) or anything you want, if you want to look for/draw one.

Additional info: If you want to, please look for additional things to put in. If not, that's fine too. I'm sure that, if you indeed undertook this request, it would look great either way. I hope this'll be a nice opportunity to flex your non-tech muscle and show another side of your sig-making abilities.

If you say so...

Sheesh... Felt like a long time since I last did a sig. Here's a Kairi one, not that I like her, just thought that her character design for KH2 is freakin' awesome (she's so pretty).

Version 1 - Realised all the text looked really messy.

Version 2 - To hell with all the text!

Version 3 - Okay, I'll just include a little...

By the way, a border does exist, just that it's pink and blends in well with the forum ,unless you're using the blue skin. So, which do you think I should use for my sig? I might still do a little tweaking sometime later.

New sig again!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/spiritedfragments/Sigs/Nia.png

It's Nia (I won't accept his english name as Near) from my favourite manga Death Note. He's my second favourite character, so expect another sig of my favourite soon, I suppose, though I'm having troubles finding a good picture of him. I see lotsa problems with the sig now, but Damn! I -accidentally- didn't save... Well, I'll do better for the next one, I hope...

As a side note, Die, Raito! And burn in hell while you're at it!

Actually, I think it's a bit too muddied; I can't make out everything in it without further scrutinization unless I tilt my monitor so that everything is brighter.

It's still good, but it's hard to see.

I love Death Note, but I just dont like your sig which is a first from you Stel. Its just to dark, only like two major colors and they all blend together so its hard to tell where the character begins and ends.

'm sorry about spammin' your thread up Stel *whimper*

The new sig is nice! Simple blending of colours, but still looks great. A little small for my liking, but thats just me. 9/10

I really like that color green too.
Great job!

@everyone (don't have time to reply separately this time round): I'll be using this style more or less for the next few sigs, coz I have been criticised for having the render just sitting on the background instead of blended it in.

Version T-W-O:

P.S. Anyone who has good pictures on L would do me a big favour by giving me the links, please?

Wow now Stel! Your starting to dissapoint me a lot today. Now I say V.1 is the better sig. Why? Because it had a more serine feel. Nothing to busy, but still had somthing going about. This one has a good start, but it looks more like random things thrown together then anything else. I do like, however, the slow contrast the signature takes from bright to dark; from right to left. Also, how did you color Nia? I think your character editing has been the best in these signatures out of all your work so far.

4/10

(Whats an L Picture?)

Before you say that, ever questioned whether I wanted a serene feel? Sorry, but I'm kinda busy trying to give Nia a dangerous look. Come to think of it, most of your comments were about how you wanted the sig to be. Remember the comment about how the .hack//SIGN sig should have a field as a background instead of a tech background? Well, go make it then. ;) You can by all means suggest some minor changes like "maybe lose the glow around the text? The render is a little lost too... needs to be a bit brighter than the background", or "I think it's a bit too muddied; I can't make out everything in it without further scrutinization unless I tilt my monitor so that everything is brighter" which I did think of when making the 2nd version. Even your "Its just to dark, only like two major colors and they all blend together so its hard to tell where the character begins and ends" helped the 2nd version to come into being.;) But don't ask me to change the whole background or something...! :P Of course I don't expect anyone to like my sigs, and it irritates me even more when someone is dishonest with their thoughts, so don't have any expectations for me. I do what I like, which may work with some and contradict others' tastes.:heh:

but it looks more like random things thrown together then anything else.
Funny, it's not very different from the first version. The background is similar, just sharper and has more added to it. ^_^

(Whats an L Picture?)
Gee... I thought you said you love Death Note? You don't know who L is? @_@

@Marlon: Thanks, your new set looks really cute, btw!

@Pyramus: And thus I have made it brighter and more contrasting. ^_^

@mystery_editor: W00t! I've finally overcome that urge to make larger sigs. And you are forgiven. :)

@Akemi: Thanks alot. I think you're a really good sig maker too.

RD
January 1st, 2006, 08:09 pm
Well, thats how my comments go then. But because you asked, I will do. Sorry if I seemed so pushy and rude :(

~

Well, the Nia text is still a bit dark. The bottom of the I bleeds into the black, so it could easly be an L if someone didnt know. I still think the background is a bit busy though. Maybe lowering the ocipacy (spelling?) a bit by like 10-15 percent may fix that, not sure.

Also..

Funny, it's not very different from the first version. The background is similar, just sharper and has more added to it.

But I still wonder how you colored Near... Its soo nice!

(Oh, and please dont be mad because I dont know who L is. I only read the first volume quickly when my friend brought it to school x_x )

I have a question. How do you make the sigs?
Hmm... That's a tough question. Each and every single one of my sig is made using different techniques. But basically, there are 4 things which make up the anatomy of a sig, the render, background, text and border. It's up to me how I want them to be like and to bring everything together so that none is out of place.

I plan on paper first, thinking of the brushes available to me. Some stuffs like cables are made instead of brushed (duh!). It can be said to be random at some poing, especially since they never quite turned out as planned, but it's not "take a few grunge brushes and abstract brushes, brush everywhere and ta-da!". I hate doing grunge in the first place (I believe I mentioned that before).

That's what I had to overcome when the person gave me 3 pictures (which I had to cut myself). On another note, what does the words on you sig say? I'm pretty curious about that.

lol if you directly translate it into english, it mean 'The dance of the firearms'.

EDIT: the new sig looks pretty good to me...
the only thing that kinda looks weird is the roundness of the fire...
but that's just personal opinion.

Good job with blending =]
