Post your reports on venturing out to what seems to be for you strange new genres. And get a few recommendations on the way.

Started listening to jazz, a friend of mine recommended John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme". Was really hard to get into, but now it blows me away.
I've also taken interest in krautrock, which is the German rock movement during the 70's. Ambient bliss, I highly recommend "Future Days" or "Tago Mago" by Can.

Can anybody recommend me some jazz to listen to? I'm not too big on the sub-genres, but I'm interested in Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" and "Bitches Brew", as well as the Coltrane album. I'm more interested in the jazz piano, so if anybody could recommend an artist for that I'd be grateful.

The Gorillaz.

I usualy never venture out of the Classical and modern instrumental music. The Gorillaz is the only pop-cultured music I listen to other then some Anime soundtracks.

What made you try and get into raggae?

For those who like the Gorillaz, I suggest you try "Hong Kong". Brilliant.

I thought I might try to open myself up to other styles, but I ended up going crazy...

The krautrock exploration is going awesome. Tago Mago has started to open up on me a bit.

EDIT: Recommend me some classical music if you would be so kind? I know of a lot of the more popular ones, like Beethoven's Ninth and Chopin and that.
I'm looking for mostly dark stuff, preferrably piano solos, but orchestras and whatnot would be fine, as long as it's relatively dark.

Its still odd going into yet another study of music. Anime Romantance Style. One thing ive noticed, a BIG BIG factor, it sound the same.

Weither if the shows jazzy, or mystical, it always is slower faced. Usually I see the tempos at about 80 BPS - Adante.

I've also noticed that there is a big obsession with a 3 note arpeggio in the left hand. most of anime music's have this. since i got into Iron Maiden's rock style, on piano, i saw a big similarity. I treat the notes as 1 chord. IM's had chords the entire time (as in the bass playing in the left hand) and switching down, or up, two "base notes."

The right hand seem's to be "slow" and "calming." A very soothing touch is needed. If you can play some of Tchaikovsky's arrangments for piano, this wouldn't be too hard to play. As i tried, BAD TRY, my impromptu the middle section, i copied the style. Although I'm into fast paced and Elaborate sounds, it was very different for me. I should post an Etude i wrote some time ago, and see what you think of it. Was more of an Etude to write a song, not to get your mind and fingers working.

So the conclusion of Anime styled music:

Left Hand: Arpeggio Rollings
Right Hand: Slow, peaceful melodies

Shostakovich has some really good string quartets. Quartet no. 8 is my favorite. Also, Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens is neat too.

Edit: And then there is of course, Tocatta and Fugue in D minor by J.S. Bach on organ.

I attempted to listen to atonal music for a while...

I gave up after my eardrums started to pour out the blood of pain. (OH HOW RANDOMLY STRUCTURED AND PAINFULLY CHORDED IT WAS!!! the horror..... the horror.....)

i've tried to play, some jazz pieces. jazz and blues is really difficult for me, because the beat and rhythm is kind of different from my usual songs.but they sound nice when you do get them right

I suggest you open up to electronica a bit. It's like "sophisticated" trance. Kid A by Radiohead is my favourite album.

So, try Kid A by Radiohead
Anything by Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada

Perhaps even Sigur Ros? I hate em though.
