Today I found out that my piano teacher is moving! :crybaby: I've only been with her for about 4-5 months learning piano, but I've known her for about 5 years, if not longer! :( She's leaving across the country to N. Carolina. We're in Nevada here. And in the city I live in (about 20,000 people), there are only a few piano teachers in the city. Now that one of them is leaving, all the kids from her are going to get dumped into the other teachers' laps - the spots will fill up quickly! I might be out of a piano teacher for a while. :( Also, my teacher is uber nice and she always lets me work on the songs that I want, even letting me break away from the order the official music book goes in that she teaches me with... :P I got her hooked on FF music and she's become obsessed with printing it off the internet now. Well, I hope things work out for me. :( In fact, I've been playing violin for 6 years now, but haven't ever had a formal teacher, and now I'm playing things above the levels of many of my classmates @ school in my orchestra class, even those who DO have teachers. :sweatdrop: So maybe I'll do ok without a teacher for a while --- - hopefully I'll find a way to continue learning piano, though.

Yes, I understand your pain... not only you must be losing a great friend but also your piano teacher. :( But for piano teaching, you'd be able to self-teach yourself for a little while. I do so myself. It's not that hard. :D And the people on this forum are very very kind; they give you a lot of good advices. ^_^

Sorry to hear that your piano teacher is moving. I can't say that I've had that experience, because I neever had a piano teacher, but keep playing the piano. Everyday if you must...^_^ good luck with continuing your piano studies.

The same thing happened to me, and I haven't been able to find another one since then. But I still keep playing. (Namely, printing out free sheet music... :shifty: ) I like playing the piano that much, so I continue anyway (even though I lacked a teacher.)

Sorry to hear that . . .

Hmm, I almost lost my piano teacher recently. Well, I no longer take lessons because I'm done with the conservatory, but I still try to keep in contact with her for the harmony lessons. But while I was gone, she moved away and forgot to give me her new phone number! Let's just say that when I got back, I was a bit stressed, trying to find her again. Luckily I succeeded. ^_^ By the way, tomorrow I'll be having my first lesson with her in 8 months. *tries to brush up on harmony*

:) How encouraging. Even if I don't get a piano teacher once my current one leaves, I'll continue on my own, I think. :D I can still self-improve. I love printing off Xenogears/FF/other RPG sheet music all the time and I enjoy playing it. I also have a subcription to www.virtualsheetmusic.com so I'm never short on music. Hopefully I'll still improve. ;)

The worst thing is when the nice one goes and the replacement is absolutely EVIL - my piano teacher moved to London and she was really nice. Then she got replaced by the satanic Mrs Litvinoff who spent more time telling me off for not practising properly (45 minutes per evening wasn't enough for her - and that was just on the set pieces, I used to spend hours mucking around with Internet sheet music or making up my own things) than she did actually teaching. I gave up in the end - she took all the joy out of learning!

I am my own piano teacher so I can't get situations like that, haha. ^_^; Though I can be a pain in the ass sometimes and I don't like me for that.

To madmazda86-

madmazda86...i understand you pain
i used to have a really really nice teacher, who has great taste in music and seems to have an endless supply of music of all sorts for me to play (she intro me into classics, church, jazz, heck even game music :sweatdrop: ) AHHHH but i have to move...now i have Mr. Pain-in-the-back X_X all he cares about is my test music...he doesn't try ANYTHING else :crybaby:....*geeeze what a bore and a pain!*

To Gnomish-
Dude...from wat i can from your violin, u got amazing self teaching skillz~~~ :) however if you're planning to go up to really really high grades or pro...u definately need a teach ^_^ (i dunno i'm guessing u can only teach yourself a certain amount of stuff). Even if you aren't getting a teacher...i hope you will never stop playing and composing music :) !!! *you got your teacher into ff music too? hehehe ^.^ *

if you are getting a teacher...good luck i hope he or she will be 1000000000X infinity better then mine

Good LUCK ~~~

Thanks IcyLucca. The music forums haven't been so lively in ages! :D Before you came here, people would see "Last posts by: Gnomish" going all the way down the music threads, but now it's your name. I'm having trouble keeping up! *yawn* :P

my piano teacher's really good, though I nearly lost her 3 years ago. I was learning off her in a school, but she decided to quit the school... but after much persuading, she's now a private music tutor, so I could still continue learning from her.

Gnomish, I'm sure you'll find a way to continue piano somehow. You have a talent for music and will excel in it~ ^^

try what i'm doin. maybe you'll be better at than I am.

TEACH YOURSELF! it's slow for me since i'm still tryin to read notes faster....

after you think u play it perfectly, listen to how it is supposed to sound like. if u hear differences, then u made an error! fix it! :D

good luck Gnomish, good luck. and godspeed!

I cant exactly say that I'm in the same situation as you, because I gave up on this one teacher who couldn't really teach me anymore, and then in high school, this teacher Mr. Frank helped me in a way to improve and recover the 6 years that I lost from wasting my time with that old teacher sigh... its now 2004, and I've been self-learning for about 2 months, and I have improved a lot, my site reading is very good and I can get through most of Beethoven's Sonata's with relative ease (laughs at that comment, because its not entirely true... in terms of MASTERY).

However dude, you have had a teacher and she taught you enough that you can compose, and you seem to know enough about music history to get you on track. I dont suggest a new piano teacher though. I suggest a person who hears your song once a week, simply tells you what your doing wrong, and then you can go back and fix it for next week. I can get that basically for free, and so can you, if you make friends with good musicians and music teachers in your area. Even if its just your school teachers. If you find someone really good, your even better.

(I tend to stray from the point when I post in forums.... but um, teaching yourself is not hard, but you can get it done twice as fast if you have a music critic who actually knows what their talking about, and has studied the score, however briefly.

Do you guys think that this (http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/058899/details.html) would be a good parting gift for her? She's a major Bach-lover and hasn't ever worked on his Die Kunst Der Fuge (The Art of Fugue) before. It even comes with a harpsichord CD recording...

oh definitely a good book for all Bach lovers.
Art of Fugue should be included in all of pianist's collection of music books.

good choice ^_^

*sigh* i have to leave my teacher because i immigrated to Canada...ARG i could've been a better pianist than i am now...cuz she was strict!! I missed her, i know how u feel V_V

Good thing about piano is that u can always self learn, even for a beginner that doesn't know anything about music. For violin....u definitely need a teacher to guild u..unless u already good a violin...

I realized the most important thing about self learn is...always choose hard pieces to challenge urself...for awhile i was playing easy pieces cuz i was lazy to work on those hard repertoires...then i was forced to go on this recital...MAN i only had 1 good ABLE to perform piece...after that i decided to play some harder pieces...improve all aspect of my skills...i think that's the best way in self learning. Oh and always be picky about tones, rhythms and other stuff lol

Hrm... I might get her a colored violin as parting gift, instead. (She's also my violin student.) What color should I get her? Pink, purple, blue, or green? Any tips on how I could figure out her fav. color without making it obvious I'm getting her something?...

But violins are much more expensive. Well, I don't know anything about your finances, but that would also be a great gift if you can afford it.

No ideas about the color? :P I'm thinking blue, just to be safe...

*bump* Well, she's leaving next Monday. I'll miss her. :(

I got her a music book of The Art of Fugue by Bach with a 2-CD Harpsichord recording. :) She'll like it...

Just had my last lesson with her earlier today. :crybaby:

Aww, bye bye to 5 years of knowing her =(

EDIT: Hmm, I've also just had my very last music lesson two weeks ago. So technically, I have no reason to visit her. But I'll still try to do so next year when I come back from school. I'll bring my songs over as an excuse, heh . . .
