If anyone has observed pianist, sometimes they have wierd face expressions. Just another funny thing that you can laugh about. ;)

yea, it's only ok if you're good as your expressions. heh, i kinda have a pale look on my face, but when i get into the music, i have the littlest grin or jump to sfz or somethings.

exactly. when i play, just my hands do the expressions. its kinda like multitasking. some people just cant do it. I imagined how Beethoven played the piano, with the standing up and the angry face

hrmm.. i dont think i have a face expression when i play the piano
i think its just plain normal and erhhh yeah...
but i dont know about others... but i find it hilarious looking at peoples 'pinky' (the little finger) when people play the piano...
coz it sticks up quite often and it looks weird....
and if im playing the piano and i notice the pinky, i start cracking up laughing and erhh yeah... anyhoo

People just say i dont look like myself when playing piano. It's either i have no face expression or i have too much...<.< sometimes i can really get into the music and my face expression just acts on its own.
Anyways, i watched other pianist, and i realized something funny, the female pianist just play elegantly, but when it comes to guys. hm..some of them does a "thumbs up" motion instead of a girly motion it's funny to watch XD

thumbs up motion?

yep, like when they lift their hands up at a rest or something, they will stick out their thumb and sort of do a "thumbs up" thing. It's a pretty cool thing to learn to prevent looking like a girl when playing piano

I dont know, some relatives came over today. played fur elise, funeral march, and some of my preludes (NOW, if i post them, u cant say any bad shit about them, everyone i know that i played them for, loved them..). i dont know, but i got into my music, i didnt know what was going on around me. lol. i knew they were talking, but didnt know about what.. also when i was done, they said i was doing odd expressions on my face. mainly some "glazed' look in my eyes, and a tempered grin on my face. the only time when i seemed to "lighten up." they said i had a little grin, and looking like my eyes were watery; about to cry.
well whatever i did, i dont remember. like one of you said earlier, i got so intot he music, the expression just came..

My mother said that I looked too tense... almost on the brink of angriness. And to think... I was thinking to myself, "Relax..." ...

Think? Don't think of anything. Just relax, don't listen what people say about your odd expression (if you have any).
Just do what's right to you. And if you think, then  do that...

Sometimes I scrunch my face when i make mistakes.....
the right side of my nose twiches, or if im not really with my music, i either start over (real profrssional) or just shake my head and lightly say. 'wtf.'

When I make mistakes, I close my eyes and pretend like I did it on purpose...

it's not hard, just don't mind that much when you make mistakes since it's normal. Just dont' stop or...start messing up afterwards

Mm... yes. I don't really have an expression at all in the first place, so the closing eye part just kind of sums it up. Works, too. Because they don't want to sound like they're ignorant of piano or something, so they don't know if you really messed up or not.

XD a good pianist gotta have a good face expression (fool the audience)

Yes. Think of it as a poker game. Poker face = :shifty:
Although, when I usually play, it looks something like this: <_< , and when I mess up, something like this: -_- Except my face isn't yellow.

Yes, my second and third face, except the mouths aren't so curled, if you know what I mean...

Attempting to make facial expressions while playing any instrument is silly. If they're not natural (if you have to think about them) then don't bother. They're also not a prerequisite for playing nicely. They're just... other forms of expressing one's self.

Now that I'm aware of this 'phenomenon' (couldn't think of a better word), I'll be self-conscious from now on when I play, so my facial expressions won't be as natural anymore =P
Edit: Oh, when I make mistakes (which is quite often), my face does tend to scrunch up or frown, and you can hear me say outloud "damn" or "shoot" :heh:

Yes, unfortunately, it is a vicious circle. :\
They're generally a good thing, though; they let the audience see visually how you're interpreting the music audibly which makes for a more immersive experience for everyone involved.

of course you'll do better when you really focus on the piece, not the expression. But maybe im wrong.
Edit: This post is for Mr. Al :)

Anybody here know the Canadian piano virtuoso, Glenn Gould? He'd sit in an awkward posture at the piano, rock back and forth, even hum and whistle along while performing. Not there's someone who truly feels the music!

lol... I've been told numerous times that I often leave my mouth wide open when I play and look at the music as if I'm trying to figure out a difficult Physics problem. When I really get into a difficult piece that I like I sometimes find that I sort of grimmace at it. ^^;; and of course... I bend my wrists way more than I have to when I play... I guess I just like to make a real show of it.

Well, I mean, you have to attempt not to make it look like you made a mistake, because that's just... unprofessional, kind of.

Yes, yes, but I'm talking about like furrowing your eyebrows when the peice is building, or smiling and raising your eyebrows during a light, flowing passage.

Yea, played for my grandmother yesterday, she said "It was better than I could ever have done..."
she also noticed that my expressions of just me moving is exactly like the songs are played. In the funeral march.. i had the most serious face, eyes almost closed, and "evil grin" on my face. then when it came into the "second part" of the piece, since it's more lighter, i had a more joyful look on my face, as he put it. Smiled a bit, Eyes out my window into a tree.. focused on something nice, in order to play it nice and peacefully.
With Fuir elise, i kept looking at my left hand, she said it was perfect, i dont know but.. well i missed at least 12 notes in the left hand.. not like missing them, but playing them almost too soft (PPPPP!!!!!)
and got a joyful look on my face when it makes the middle change.. back to looking at my left hand when it comes to the melody.. then, the best part.. the repeating A and Bb.. from lessons (the teq. that im being taught) the repeated notes were right on cue, same with my expression.. i dont know, for some reason i had a "Nervous look" on my face, as grandmother put it.
*I DID THE STUPID SCALE AT THE END OF THAT PART, PERFECTLY! *
but yea,
then improvised, i was in a sort of irrtable mood, then played something like off a very elaberant Chopin/Beethoven piece... the expressions on my face were full of anger and passion for it also. it was getting any anger out.. since my grandmother was big into reading peoples faces, she could tell that i AM letting out anger.. and yea, played it well to, didnt miss notes (how do u miss improv nites lmao) but you know, stayed in key when it was appropiate.
but yea, it's no ego to me when it comes to expressions, it's whats coming out...
